I was surprised GM only used the Atlas I6 engine for one life cycle. Would have liked to see them evolve it.

It would be nice to see it turbocharged

These were great engines with performance potential. Reliable, smooth, interesting sound. I would love to see a turbo one as well. Unfortunately the recession killed any chance of that happening

I agree I had a trailblazer for a few years as a winter beater and it was a good engine. Minimal issues

@robertvance18732 ай бұрын
They also used the same engine in trail blazers
@bwofficial17762 ай бұрын
GM does big RWD SUVs well. If there was one thing they were good at in the 2000s, it was SUVs. That inline 6 deserved to be developed further.

Fun fact this is technically a continuation of the Bravada cuz after the Bravada and really Oldsmobile got the ax after 04 GM used the body shell from the Bravada for the Rainier
@jeremiahallyn46032 ай бұрын
I can see that now, it is definitely the same body as the Bravada was. Thanks for the fact 👏

@jeremiahallyn4603 here's another example of reused body shells within GM when the Acadia got a refresh for 2013 it used the body shell of the discontinued Outlook

Great video, Zack. Just a few small corrections: The Jeep Wrangler started as a 1987 model. Before that, they were CJs. The XJ Cherokee is not on a Wrangler platform. The Wrangler is body on frame, the Cherokee is unibody.

Not only did I sell for Buick when these were out, but I owned it's sister the Chevy Trailblazer. I loved the way they drove. HATED the poor MPG's. Also, even though the I6 had good HP numbers, they were actually kind of sluggish. In 2004 just after picking up our Trailblazer brand new, we headed out on a trip to the west side of Montana from Illinois. I'm an easy driver and when traveling I am all about the best fuel economy I can get. Overall round trip, it was in the high 18's with easy driving. Well, easy except for one time in the mountains when a 4 cyl Honda Civic blew me away going up hill. The Trailblazer just seemed to wheeze and huff with little to show for it. Needless to say, once I got home it was traded in for a Chevy Cavalier LT Sport trim because I wasn't going to keep putting so much gas in the Trailblazer. But if performance and MPG wasn't important for you, this Buick would have made the nicer and more luxurious model.

Wow this was such a blast to the past for me because my parents used to have one as the family vehicle since I was kid. It was literally this spec with the same color but it was a 2004 and rwd. The cluster and shifter looked different too. My dad had it till 283k miles. He had the all the gaskets redone at 190k and the trans rebuilt at 230k only reason we got rid of it was cause it got stolen and they just took it for a joyride and trashed it. 😢Honestly it looked worse than what it was and I wanted to fix it cause it mostly the suspension and rear airbags that need replacement and a new front fascia,grill,and headlights. Sometimes I look to see if I can find another one like it. Thanks for the great trip done memory lane Zach 👍
@1800luce2 ай бұрын
One point you didn't mention is that the Rainier has a rear air suspension that the Trailblazer didn't have. It has a high failure rate and the best solution is to remove it and replace it with the coil springs and shocks from a TrailBlazer. The ride quality isn't as great but at least the rear won't drag.

I have the ‘04 Envoy XL. Using the same engine. 220488+ miles. 2WD. 4L60E. Already showing signs of slipping. So I baby it. The engine has a rumble. I’m thinking motor mounts. It runs well otherwise.
