Many thanks. What torch did you use to harden the 4040? How hot did you get it?

When I was in school I had access to a heat treat oven. I would leave them with the shop teacher and he would put my stuff in with the rest of the shops stuff. You can do it with a torch too but it wont be through hard . Heat cherry red until it looses magnetism and then quench. I have also done it in my fireplace and left the parts in the coals until cherry red . Leave them soaking at red hearlt for 10 mins and quench. Hope that helps

The torch was a oxy acetylene. MAP will work too

@@foam_blaster Many thanks. I did mean 4140 not 4040... I have plenty of 4130 which is the same as regards heat treatment as I understand it.

@@BensWorkshop are you planning to make the same holders ? If so 4140 will be fine with out heat treat. Unless you can grind them after id recommend leaving them
