In this video I do the calibration procedure for my 20" planer. It's very exciting!

Great video, I have a Grizzly 15 that has been so out of alignment (in every way) that I pretty much stopped using it. Your video provided me with the information I needed to bring the machine back into the Best performance I've ever had--even when new, back in the 1990's! I would suggest to folks that have issues with knees, hips, eyes, etc. I found using a engine lift to pick up the planer and then placing it on a lift cart that uses a hydraulic cylinder foot pump to raise the cart up to a comfortable height made the job enjoyable and allowed pain free adjusting.

Love the video, I Just got the same planer and it was super helpful to get everything set up. I started it for the first time and I hear a metallic "clunk" each time when it first starts. Then I can't get the wood to go through at all. Any thoughts of what I might be doing wrong?
@Sfyre2 жыл бұрын
I have the same problem, the initial 'clank' on startup looks to be the belts hitting the belt cover with the initial torque on startup. Though I have an additional 'clank' right after every piece of wood is fed through unless i daisy chain them together. I think the second clank are the anti kickback teeth springing back into place but it doesn't sound healthy haha.
@chadfilipiak85892 жыл бұрын
I will check that out. Grizzly also told me it could be the motor fan hitting the cover so I will check all these things. I just don't want it to be something damaging the planer. thanks so much
@Sfyre2 жыл бұрын
@@chadfilipiak8589 it's really easy to check, the two hand screws keeping the cover on can be removed by hand, then remove the cover, keep your digits clear of the belts/pulleys, then turn it on to see if the clank is gone. =) good luck!

Thanks for the video. I found it helpful. What's the point of the melamine? Why is it better than the original bed? I just bought a used 20" Grizzly and will be getting it tuned up. Thanks for the help.
@ScottBarronFurniture4 жыл бұрын
I find the bed rollers to cause more problems than they solve, but your experience may be different. The melamine gives a nice smooth surface and I can drop the rollers out of the way. But the biggest advantage is that with an added bed you can plane below the planer's minimum thickness (about 1/4" for this one).
@ryandonohoe22494 жыл бұрын
@@ScottBarronFurniture That makes sense Scott. This is my first planer with bed rollers. I'll see how it goes once I get it all tuned up. Thanks for the great video.

@@ScottBarronFurniture I set up a piece of melamine on my bed, but noticed some deflection on my dial indicator when I press down on the melamine. Any idea why that might be happening?

Did adding the melamine bed eliminate the snipe or did the roller adjustments do that? Mine came in today and i have an identical problem
@ScottBarronFurniture3 жыл бұрын
Reducing or eliminating snipe really comes from tuning everything. The melamine takes the bed rollers out of play and removes that variable, and also provides a real slick surface which is nice. It can also allow you to plane thinner stock than some planers might allow.

I am getting lines along the grain with my jet. Evenly spaced. I cannot figure out what is causing it. Any ideas?
@ScottBarronFurniture2 жыл бұрын
I would check the cutters for any nicks, that can cause lines. If those are ok maybe there’s some debris on the pressure bar or maybe the pressure bar is too low. Those are the places I would start. Good luck!

I bought those delve squares and can't make a line without my pencil breaking til theres no lead left every time. Gave up on them.

Yep, same here. Also with the Incra stuff that works with the mechanical pencils. It’s a little frustrating.

I received my Grizzly planer two days ago. Out feed tables not aligned....an inch off centerline on each hole and no way to attach to table. Four calls and three emails and still nothing from Grizzly. I've even sent pics as requested. The negative reviews are real...I should have listened to the all the people who paid for the equipment with their own money. Buyers beware.
