I found for me the 25/9 works and the 36/13 i liked more. But i only have 80s bikes left so i rock a 44/16 or 43/16 on a 20 inch. My 87 gt pft and dyno pro compe have 43/16 but my 87 redline has 44/16. On my 86 skyway street styler i has 43/16 but 180mm redline cranks and wow super effortless pedaling to get going but too much pedaling on the top speed. So you can mess with 170mm to 185m on crank arms too for your best feeling. That clip at the end with the cruiser and smaller wheels reminded me of my 85 hutch pro star that i put 16 inch wheels on. I sued to bunny hop that thing so high. I miss it

Front gear tooth number divided by rear gear tooth number times tire size equals the gear inches . 25 divided by 9 x 20 equals 55.5 gear inches. Old school 44 divided by 16 x 20=55. This is the gear inch ratio you are lookin for, give or take a few inches or fractions of an inch. So on a 29 inch tire you could go 33 divided by 17 x 29 = 56.2. Good enough. Or 30 divided by 16 x 29 = 54.3 gear inches. It's essentially the same as the 25/9 on a 20 inch tire. I shoot for anywhere between 54- 58 gear inches. Easy peasy. I run 30/13 on my 24" S&M Dirtbike which works out to 55.4 gear inches. A higher gear inch number will give you more top end speed with less bottom end torque. And the reverse goes with a lower gear inch number. It all depends on your leg strength and spinning skills. If you like to spin hard go with 53/54. If you love top end speed and like to "chop wood" go around 57/58. Hope this helps.

Now I’m back on my ripper and I went to a really similar gear set (33/16) Perfect for wheelies, not too little to rip it around town at a good pace. Idk why I don’t see 33/16 more often

I love this video and I'm a mountain biker. i have legs that can climb and do things that most can not do and am 210 pounds . just lost 50 pounds . I was running a 44/52 road crank on my steel full suspension KHS with double triple RST on it. yet i could still ride with the fellas and gals and always passed them all on the ride home on the roads be it down hill or up. gear ratios are specific to the person pedaling. just because some tall guy says a 180mm crank is better for him does not mean it is good for another tall guy or gal. and microdrive drove me insane in the early to mid 90's

I wish you would actually make these slightly more technical. The inch-gear concept is a means of comparing a chain-drive bicycle to a high wheeler. We don't have many high wheelers any more, but they were the bicycles before chain drive. Chainwheel teeth ÷ rear sprocket teeth × tire diameter= inch gear. 44 ÷ 16 = 2.75 2.75 × 20 = 55 for what we call a 55 inch gear. That means the same as a high wheeler with a 55" diameter wheel. Inch gear × pi = the distance traveled for one revolution of the cranks. Your viewers may not be thinking enough of the numbers, rather than thinking of them too much, as you suggested. The shortcut of saying 1 tooth bigger in the back requires 2 or 3 teeth bigger in the front is not very accurate either. Always do the division and multiplication if you want to be accurate. For example, all the cogs' tooth numbers must be divided into all the chainring tooth numbers to know the actual progression of ratios on a multi-speed bike. Someone riding a multi-speed is only guessing how to shift if he/she doesn't do the math. The old standard 42/52 setup on a road bike will have overlap in the ratios which are available with each chainring. This requires double shifting if one wants to shift from one ratio to the very closest next ratio. By doing the math, one learns where the double shifts are. Obviously, this is much more complicated than a single-speed, but guessing or estimating is nowhere near as accurate as actually calculating the inch-gear ratio of the setup being evaluated. By the way, I own 4 Gary Littlejohn cruisers, 3 of which are the Factory Cruiser or Lowboy model. The 4th one is a Fireroad Cruiser. I just learned what they're selling for, and I am astounded. Damn, it's good to be old and own all this stuff! I just bought a brand new re-issue Tange TRX fork from Pork Chop BMX, on sale for $110, to put on a chrome plated Lowboy which has NEVER BEEN BUILT! I'm going to have a brand new, chrome plated, Gary Littlejohn Factory Cruiser in 2023! How am I doing?

i need 6:1 (60/10) ratio before it hits my 20" solid carbon fiber wheel. i am 5' 6.75" tall and 200 lbs lean. i go 60 mph on my early1980's huffy pro thunder. Yup i got the crank for the leverage baby. only problem is , i need stronger material strength and use a single piece crank because i snap chains, strip out parts, and bend pedals everywhere. 🙂 Now it got rusted so need a new frame built. Going carbon aluminum and/or chromoly. i build my own gears because there is too much flex inherent in standard bicycle gears. i have to use a motorcycle chain. i am thinking of converting to a transmission without chain.

So if I’m using a 36t front sprocket and a 16t freewheel in the back on a 20inch bmx bike and it feels like I’m pedaling a mountain bike in first gear still should I switch to a larger freewheel? Like a 18t instead of 16t? There’s hardly any resistance from the pedals for a single speed bike it’s honestl way too easy when pedaling and I can’t catch any real speed so should I switch to bigger freewheel? Like a 18t?

Divide the front teeth (25) by back teeth (9)=27.77777778. Then multiply by the wheel diameter (20)= 55.55555. That’s gear inches. So the bike should roll about 55 inches per crank revolution. But I think the 29ers are geared more like a 28x9 20 inch. 36t\16t=2.25 x29 = 65.25 gear inches or 28t\9t=3.11111 x 20 = 62.2222- gear inches. I’d probably run a 32x16 if I had a 29er because it’s hilly where I live.

You want to be hitting the quickest reps you can push at about 28mph. Depends on your legs, I'm long legged, rather than a "spinner". Do an exercise bike power meter, and find your peak power reps on full sprint, then get out your calculator. That ain't for BMX, that's for a single speed rider, but it's my method.
