Shop Talk Ep. 3 | Creating A Stereo Signal With A Mono DI?

Hey Friends! Today's episode answers a question I received about trying to use a break out cable to send a stereo signal down a mono DI. The person who texted me is using a very cool Rupert Neve Designs DI on his SPD pad and wanted to keep the sonics of his RNDI while providing FOH a stereo signal. He texted me asking a question on whether he could use a 1/4" Y to TRS cable to make his signal stereo and use his RND direct box. Ben and I discuss!
DISCLAIMER: This video is in no way meant to make fun of, or belittle the people mentioned. TRS & TS cables are a common issue of debate since they are the same physical size. If you aren't a super nerd like me who builds cables and panels, it can be confusing using the TS and TRS connector interchangeably. Again, this is meant to be in good fun.

In regards to an electric stereo pedal board….. 2 mono di box with 2 mono cables will just give you hard pan left and right but not give true stereo right? In order to get true stereo you would need 2 TRS Cables? Ps I really enjoyed this vid!!

Two mono DI’s will follow the pan of what is being sent from your pedal board. TRS cables should not be used with pedals unless specified as “balanced”. Using a TRS cable in conjunction with a TS will most likely introduce noise. TRS cables aren’t stereo, they simply carry the hot (tip) the cold (ring) {cold being the reversed polarity signal of the hot} and the ground. This is what makes the signal “balanced”. Headphones as an example are a stereo signal over TRS except that signal is left (tip) right (ring) and a common ground between left and right at the (sleeve). Hope this helps!
