When I was a maid I saw so many things that I thought would've made the average person gasp in shock and revulsion. Yet consumerism and materialism was not even recognized let alone seen as an issue by my teammates or our clients. The last straw was when I was mopping one of the foyers for a trophy wife and I looked down to see the cat's water fountain had a half empty bottle of Fiji water next to it. The cat was drinking fiji water, and I was living in a homeless shelter. Looking back I wish I'd taken a picture. I will never forget that moment and the anger and disgust that it fills me with to this day.

TheChickenRiceBowl I know someone who only shop grocery at wholes foods and Kings, they lived lavishly. One day the husband lost job, they had no saving so they exhausted their retirement fund. When that was gone. They sold their house and moved out. The husband eventually found a job with electrician making the minimal wage. So do not envy anyone’s spending habits. It is only a glimpse of that moment. Life is quite long.it goes up and down.

It isn’t an issue to give your pet good quality water. If tap water isn’t great for humans, imagine the effects on their smaller bodies. Animals breath and has feelings just like you. Don’t compare your situation to others. Materialism is bad, I agree. But thinking it’s a crime to give animals good quality water is ridiculous.

I agree. I also think that same disconnect has the effect of tempting younger people to hand-wave away their own over-consumption and materialistic habits. It’s easy to sit here in 2021 and say, “Man, why did our parents care about a green lawn, a big house full of fancy furniture, or a full set of silver kitchen utensils that they never used”, completely ignoring that much of the stuff America is materialistic about in 2021 is just as vain and wasteful as the stuff our parents bought. I caught myself many times during this video rolling my eyes and feeling a sense of superiority about some of the stuff the older generation cared about because that stuff is so obviously meaningless today. That said, I do have a feeling the younger generations are a bit more conscious of how their habits affect the world around them, and are a bit less materialistic than their parents were.

@Jeffrey Haines i’d say that’s the misconception about minimalism. most minimalists don’t decorate in a “minimalistic” style or anything, they live their life with only the important things. usually that means keeping only one of something like a jacket, and only focusing on things you need while honoring your hobbies without distractions

I was actually being graded poorly in my major because I was disheveled and didn’t have the energy to wear makeup or dress up when I was so hungry. And it’s annoying when you see everyone else pull up in a bmw and going out to dinner with their friends when you’re actually starving. NIce doc, kinda falls apart at the end with the suggestion that we can solve this by changing consumer behavior. The problem is well beyond the means of the consumer to address, we've been trying it for 10+ years now and we're no better off. We need people to take back control of their governments and use them to hold big business accountable.
@MayankGoel4472 жыл бұрын
I kinda disagree with you. I believe the solution to consumerism should be a collective effort by public and the government. Government should force companies to make products that last longer and are environmentally sustainable. Also, minimalism should be taught early in school. So that, the thought process of our society begins to change. Whereas we as consumers should curb our spending habits and rather than looking for happiness in goods, we should look for happiness in our actions and ourselves.

I feel more alive when I work on my garden or when I work closely with my students (individuals with disabilities and or disorders). Even as something simple as feeding local cats is more alive than shopping. Shopping for me is just getting goods and products that I use and need, but no material value in the sense of brand name which is superficial for me. I buy it because I actually use it and truly want it do to its utility. The whole nation use to be like this. I never cared for the Jones's. They seem to be boring. LOL
