The bosuns whistle is used aboard sea vessels to give commands to the crew as a voice couldn't always be heard over the sound of the sea. (also called a boatswains whistle)

I’m a teacher and my school accidentally bought the Scots edition of Harry Potter for the kids to read and they were saying they couldn’t read it and the teacher was like ‘don’t be so ridiculous of course you can’ - until we looked 😂

Yeh it's not a very good edition of Scots it's more just jumbled Glasweddgian and silliness haha. I have many books in Scots English. We also have our own language Scottish Gealic but no issue of it yet

The bosun’s whistle meaning here. The Boatswain's call was predominantly used to issue orders during times when voices could not be heard over the rumbling sea. Early on, the pipe was a symbol of rank, perhaps due to the fact that these were worn by high-ranking officers to signal orders to the crew. It’s also the whistle they used in Star Trek

Let’s shed more light on the bosuns whistle. Not sure if someone else explained it in another post: signals to the sailors were given with high pitched whistles to break through storm and battle noises. Til today “piping the side” is an honour for dignitaries. Nifty little thing
