With my job, I used to justify “retail therapy” to reduce my stress. Now retired I volunteer at a local charity that receives donations for homeless individuals moving into housing. The amount of “stuff” received that has to be sorted is a front row seat to the world of over consumption. Yikes.

My friends got their little girl a pool last year. They didn't use it as much as they thought they would and it was difficult to store during the winter, etc., so they wound up selling it on FB Marketplace after only using it one season. They paid several hundred dollars for the pool and all the accessories and sold it all for $50. So that being said, sometimes if you really want something, it's worth looking into it secondhand. That way you don't have to invest a lot and maybe break even if you wind up selling it.

Your story about the pool is spot on! It’s not just the cost of the pool but the chemicals, pump, etc. not to mention what your time is worth taking care of it. We have a pool and I love it but it is a labor of love and I don’t think people weigh all pros and cons. Great video! ❤

Thanks Tammy! It was such a hard decision! Luckily Jordan loves to research things like this until we are all blue in the face so by the end we knew it was going to cost way more than we first expected! If we didn’t have kings dominion passes already we might have thought more about it especially in this heat wave hahah

Unless you live in a place with hot weather year-round, it's better to just go to the YMCA in the summer months or sit in a tub of cool water or run through a sprinkler. The cost of a pool is enormous and for most people it will be unused for 9 months of the year.

Becky, this hits so close to home. Good for you for figuring this out at such a young age😊 I’m just figuring this out now at age 47 and so much of it is due to your videos. Aaahh… the time and money wasted over the years. We’ve been fortunate to have never been in debt, but the amount of money we have freely spent over the years could’ve been put to much better use. There’s nothing I can do about the past, but I’m very much looking forward to our future years and all of the traveling we can do and just the freedom we’ll have from living with less. I’m really trying to instill this in my kids too so they don’t have to learn the hard way. Thank you❤❤❤

Good points! It made me reflect on what I usually ask myself before a purchase. My go-to questions before buying something (especially something more or less unnecessary) are: -How to take care of it? - Where would this go in my home? And! does it fit or is it kind of squeezed in? - Will it go with/add to the overall ''vibe'' I want in my home? - Does it come with/need extra accessories? (Even cords.) And where would I keep those? - Is it actually the exact thing I want/need, or am I settling for something that's just good enough? (For certain things, that's okay. But more often not.) - Will I be able to move it by myself? (E.g. furniture.) - Does it have the same function as something I already have? And do I need two similar things, or is it worth replacing the one I have? - Will it be useful in specifically MY life, or is it a thing that is generally useful for others (and I only THINK it would be for me too?) - Does it give me the same kick I get from saving money? Not the purchase itself, but the actual usage of the thing. - It took some practice to be able to predict that more or less accurately. (It always feels great when I come to the end of a monthly pay period and see that I can save more money than I thought I'd be able to. If the item I'm considering getting doesn't really match that feeling, then I hold off until I know for sure.)

Every time I buy something or get a gift it seems like I’m buying work for us. The packaging needs to be dealt with, the item needs to be installed or found a place for, sometimes I don’t even like it. I really step back and ask myself it I need it, if it’s worth the work, do I have space for it, is there something else that works in the same way. I don’t want to buy work either!

Hey Becky, I've been living frugally by necessity at times & choice now for years but still have times where I get the urge to spend or convince myself that I need something, but now instead of just buying it I question it, wait & more often than not I realise that I really don't need that new thing & am so happy that I didn't buy it afterwards ❤️

We just back from vacation and normally I would always buy something while on vacation but this time the only things we bought was food, a ticket for touring an old battleship and submarine for an experience with the kids, and we had to buy each of us a new pair of shoes ( the ones we bought with us got soaking wet while we were on the boat fishing on the river because a big rain storm came up and we all got soaked plus our shoes were getting wore out anyways and we were already saying we needed new ones, so that was the push for us to get new ones).

Nick is the best!!! I have been watching him for quite a long time now… everyone should watch him… ❤🙏 also… we decided to buy a pool for the kids when they were younger and we found out that it was the worst decision ever!!! We had it for 3 years and I was able to sell it for about half of the cost so I was happy to get some money back… really think it through because it is a big investment.. ❤

First off, ❤. I love and appreciate your videos/channel as I continue my journey of simplifying and minimalism. My husband and I “played” the minimalism game together as our June challenge, and we both shared the concern of bringing in items into house and how we can “combat” that for the future since we have worked so hard to simplify and get to where we currently are. I really appreciate your idea of thinking about your hourly pay and purchases so much that I made sure to check my teacher salary and break it down by hour- thank you for that idea! I struggle with purses and shoes and upholding to no buy months. Can’t wait for more of your videos.

Thank you so much for sharing! I love that you and your husband are working together for the same goal 😍 the hourly pay really helped me 2! I realized I was often buying things because I felt like I “worked hard” so I deserved it or I had money in the bank so I could do what I want 🤦🏼‍♀️ this calculation helped me to second guess if I really needed that shirt or new bag. New video coming out today at 11 est! I really appreciated reading your story!

I LOVE Nick!! He is my go to when I feel overwhelmed in life (my day-to day, my home, family, responsibilities, etc). I secretly would LOVE to try that, "be a monk for 30 days". I think I would thrive! Life can be so noisy and busy. I'm finding that even though I consider myself to be a minimalist, I'm still needing to calm my nervous system. I think I'm going to go further with minimalism.

The question that I have started to ask myself before a purchase is “ is there something else that I am willing to give up in order to have this new thing?” This is especially helpful for items that I know I already have enough of like purses, Tupperware, electronics and even clothing. Because I know that I already have enough, I force myself to trade something for the new purchase. Often times I realize that what I have is good enough and I don’t need to upgrade to something new.

There is definitely a rewiring of the brain that occurs, eventually. It takes a lot longer to break habits than it does for make them. Desire to change definitely needs to be the driving force to keep working towards changes. I've been toying with getting a tabletop fountain for our back porch. But I finally faced the fact that it would be one more thing that would need to be maintained and that outweighed the benefit of having a little water trickle sound.

Hey can I ask about your wardrobe? How often do you buy yourself clothing as looking at your capsule wardrobe video you seem to have several other pieces that you wear that weren't shown in the video :) much love x

So this year I bought a few new pieces because I’ve gained some weight and things weren’t fitting the same! Hahah idk if you’ve ever been there! But I gave myself the option to replace a few pieces and declutter the things that weren’t working for my body 😍 I can definitely do a wardrobe walk through again if you’re interested! Thanks for asking!

Saying no to our kids is super hard. Any tips on this?
@minimalease
@minimalease 23 күн бұрын
That's a hard one. For myself I had to change the way I looked at it first. I used to want to give my child everything I never had, but I realized I wasn't helping her in doing this and we were both more stressed in an over cluttered home. Now when she wants something I will take a picture of it and she will be able to add it to a list for things like her birthday or christmas. She will get little things now and then, like today I let her pick out some playdough. But we try to keep it to mostly consumables
