I started to put away £500 a month. I was planning on leaving my job as I was being bullied. Although I was earning quite a lot it gave me great satisfaction to say "I'm out of here. Do it yourself". I had been leading up to this for maybe 10 years. My health was declining due to workload etc. I also had 3 miscarriages whilst working. I decided to give my body a break and walked out. Everyone thought I was mad. However a year after I managed to have my son who is now 2 and I wouldn't want it any other way. Doing a no buy and pay yourself first was the best thing I have ever done for myself.

I've been impulsive and wanting to learn or do new hobbies and things, then the desire goes away and I have a ton of stuff I have no real knowledge or even time to use right. So, my no-buy year starts tomorrow (Monday reset day) & it's gonna be ALL about capitalizing on the things I've already bought, making great stuff, learning new instruments... all that stuff. And feeling more competent and in control will likely curb those depressive episodes that tend to lead to retail therapy. I have a library full of books to read and tubs of yarn to create things... not gonna be bored, that's for sure.

@@KirstyKirby Just talk to most people over 60, that was a way of life for majority of North Americans..... basics only. Large families and hand me downs. We lived basics unlike what those younger think living basics is today. Outhouse, gas lanterns, water pump outdoors, maybe not all the time, but try a year of that,..... with 7 children in a house and only a wood stove. It is amazing how one can live with basics. When I say basics, I mean toilet paper and a toilet in the house, running water, indoor plumbing, a good heat source, an electric stove, now that is a luxury and many times I forget what life was like for that one year when we were young, and then many years with below poverty level... Basics are sometimes leaving out butter, and no margarine, and no peanut butter. Having bread, fruit and veggies is enough. Meat is a luxury, but that did not hurt us because less meat is good. Watering down shampoo and dish soap. Watering down ketchup bottles to make it last. Absolutely no frills with food, and cosmetics were unheard of, other than the huge bottle of lotion or shampoo. Cheap brands. A huge honking bag of puffed wheat. Ah, the good ol days. :)

It was amazing. We were teachers with modest incomes, but since our jobs were secure we did well and lived happily since we loved our work. Today, in the US, teaching jobs usually are not enjoyable and secure. Jobs are insecure and treatment of employees seems brutal. I love this no buy movement. For one thing, it’s human nature to treat ourselves to a cheap purchase because we can’t afford what we really want or need and we’re impatient. We’re swimming in a commercial world. So we end up with a lot of junk. 😢

Hi Sarah I know exactly what you mean, doing a no buy has been incredibly eye opening as I too found that over time I was less interested in ‘stuff’. As you say there will always be things we need and I don’t think there’s anything wrong with having things you want - but I’ve found that when I sit back and wait, most of the things I find I’m not that bothered about having. Whilst I officially finished my no buy when filming this, I’ve not bought anything other than one thrifted dress! Good luck with your savings goals, I’ve massively found having this helped me really question if I wanted something. I am currently awaiting exchange on a property and being so close to achieving that goal makes all the ‘sacrifice’ feel completely worthwhile. Xx

I continue to use what I have - it’s amazing how long things last when you just use them in a normal everyday life way. When I initially did my makeup no buy I found it shocking how long things take to use up, I’m still using up things I bought 3 years ago! 🤦♀️ it’s so easy to fall into bad habits of ‘just’ buying this or that and can be so hard to get out of. I think we are often shopping to induce a certain feeling, yet there are just as great feelings that come from saving, like security, options, etc etc xx

I’ll try this. I spent 2k this year on fast-food/take out for me and my husband. So this is something I want to reduce and stop buying things like cute little plants or cute things that are “cheap”.

Good luck! Yes I used to buy things that were ‘cheap’ and invariably they ended up being sent to the charity shop or binned eventually. I try to just buy only things I really want now, even if they are more expensive.

I sympathise on the take away costs. I looked at my bank statements and discovered I'd spent €427.65 JUST ON PIZZA in 3 months! 😳 Multiply that by 4, and it comes to €1710.60! 😱 For me, that's 3.5 months rent. 🙈

Well done Kirsty. I have done something similar in the past, it is a bit like fasting, eventually one has to eat, but the fasting makes you appreciate food so much more! As long as one does a "no buy" cheerfully and has enough already to re-use and recycle, it is a great practice.
@KirstyKirby3 жыл бұрын
Yesss! I find the more you do it the easier it gets too. For example, I really fancied some new Chanel Nail Polish, which is obviously pricey, but after not buying anything for a year I was tempted when I saw an offer on. I decided to just sit on it for a day or two as i really don't NEED anymore. I have several colours, and it's not like I'm running out, but I could afford it no problem if I decided to buy. I forgot about it and the offer passed and I don't feel like I've missed out at all. Not buying things almost becomes the predominant habit and now I can't imagine being so frivolous again! xx

This is really lovely as are you! This year I took on a seasonal job that got me working in the woods - no phone, no signal, no shops. My relationship with shopping has definitely changed. I mean, I save every month anyway and I'm relatively careful with buying now but simultaneously it's mad to think my savings would probably last a year if for some reason I became completely unemployed!
@KirstyKirby Жыл бұрын
Ah that’s really kind of you to say. You never know when those savings might come in handy, I found myself unemployed and then took a job that was a massive pay cut just to keep the wolf from the door whilst I looked for something appropriate - it’s been awful but made so much easier by having savings. I don’t think I’d have gotten through it without. Thankfully I’m back in a job that pays reasonably well but things could have been so much worse without large savings. X

I really enjoyed your no buy video. I’m not going to lie. The stress from the pander has catapulted me into an Amazon addiction. I absolutely need to get ahold of it and cut way back. Thanks for showing us it’s possible and all the benefits it offers. I do have one no buy I am consistent and proud of: I don’t buy any animal products for myself. Being vegan has also allowed me to self cure my high cholesterol, triglycerides, overweight and elevated blood pressure. I don’t know how much money I have saved by only buying fruit, vegetables, nut, grains and seeds as they’re expensive especially the organic ones, but I don’t have the medical bills and problems I would have if I still ate animal products. I also cut out junk food which has been a huge help physically and financially.

Apart from food and personal care items, I don’t need for any extras. I want to start my own small business with minimal overheads that I can run from home, and extra savings will come in handy. Have a great year ahead, hope you keep healthy and safe. Philippa 💐

I did no buy a few years ago and it felt so good. I can pay my bills and knowing that I have spare money on my account is really a relief.

I agree Angie. I know not everyone is so lucky but having an ‘emergency fund’ of savings really alleviates some stress.

Good for you! I think I have lived most of my life this way!! It’s so cool to see it’s a “thing” now.

I’ve been reasonably frugal most of my life in comparison to many but this was something I did to really pump up my savings for a house, and it worked. And thankfully helped me question some of my shopping habits in the process. Great to hear you are maximising your savings too!

Good luck with it Sunshine! There’s loads of ways to socialise without spending - I like to just visit friends at home or spend time in nature. Good luck!

I did something very similar when saving for a family visit from N Z to the U K. My strategy was to never buy on the day I saw an item but to tell myself I would buy it tomorrow. Needless to say the item was not purchased. The savings in a year that was frugal were amazing. We had our trip and I developed a mindset that said to question myself before spending. Great outcome
@KirstyKirby3 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for sharing your story Sharron! Yes I relate to that so much, in fact a similar tip of ‘sleep on it’ will be in an upcoming video of how I managed to stick with the no buy. I agree with you, once you start being purposely frugal, especially on things that aren’t really important to you, the savings are amazing. I found I almost enjoyed the challenge of seeing if I could save more and more each month.

I loved your video and will start to set a goal by making 2022 is a no buy year for me .. I have spent a fortune shopping in 2021/ 2021 . I love all my items but it is a deniable fact that saving is a must for all the valid reasons you mentioned

I have never done a no buy year. After hearing your story, I am convinced that it is needed. Thank you for sharing your story. I look forward to the coming new year knowing that all things happen for a reason. Way to go and Congrats!👌👌

Thank you for watching! I only intended to do a few months at first, but over time I stuck with it. Now I’ve found so many side benefits and it’s really changed my relationship with shopping and ‘things’. Good luck if you decide to give it a go!

I'm not exactly planning on making 2022 a no buy year as it is the year of my wedding -- but I plan on doing the closest thing to one that I can under the circumstances! Thanks for this video.
@KirstyKirby3 жыл бұрын
Totally understandable. I don’t think I could be as extreme as this constantly! Since then I’ve managed to stay on a ‘low buy’ where I try to only buy things I truly want or need which has worked well. Thanks for watching and congratulations!! X
@happycook67372 жыл бұрын
Take the ridiculous sum of money you would spend on your wedding and save it for something lasting like a house down payment. The wedding rip off industry is a well oiled machine and not in your best interest. I made my own wedding cake with real top quality ingredients for $40! Bakery wanted $800 for a very simple cake. I carried a lovely bouquet of flowers bought from grocery store Trader Joe's for $14. Florist wanted $160 for one bouquet. My dress was $200 because I'm not that picky. He wore a suit he already owned. Etc. It was a lovely, awesome event that didn't break the bank.

This is so motivating! Starting my first no-buy year NOW! I think I am more excited to see how much time I free up as I've discovered I waste a lot of time browsing.

Good for you! Great job! I am thinking of going low buy in 2022 because my craft room is running out of storage space and I cannot possibly make all the projects I already have on tap! Another thing I would highly recommend, once the pandemic issues clear and you feel more secure in your job is investing in your retirement. My husband (of 40 years now) started me investing in IRA’s in my late 20’s and WOW! What a difference compound interest makes on your future.
@KirstyKirby3 жыл бұрын
I agree, compound interest is amazing. It’s a shame that in the U.K. interest rates have been so low on savings for over a decade now. It’s promoted lending (because it’s ‘cheap money’) and saving or investing has fallen out of favour.
@gailbrule17443 жыл бұрын
@@KirstyKirby Yes, the powers that be appear to want to keep people in debt, don’t they? However, the mutual funds our IRA’s are invested in over time have beat bank interest rates consistently and significantly. The down side is you can’t touch the money until retirement. Something to consider. You are on the right track...saving is better than borrowing every day.
@Lola193 жыл бұрын
Hi Kirsty, a 50 % savings rate is great! I did no-buy years before and it allowed me to finance travel later on and pay off debt. Now I am starting out on my journey to save for a down payment too. I can manage to save the amount I need in three years If I do the whole time no-bye years. I am really motivated right now, hopefully, I can keep it up. I would love to hear from you, how you kept yourself motivated during that time, especially when everyone else around you is spending, thank you! :)

I ended up saving 60% so even smashed my own goal! :) I intend on making more videos shortly - I've been away as I actually finally reached my goal of buying a home!

I am going to give it ago, even though my husband and I are both retired, but still spend too much on items we don't need or want. I must admit my husband is better than me about spending.

I just found your video! I have set myself a goal of no spending every other month this year and in the alternate “spend” months it will be based on my budgeted allowance! My allowance will be cash only so if I find something that I really want that is bigger than what I have in my cash envelope, I will have to save for it!!

I’ve have been cleaning out my house, it’s surprising to see how much junk I have purchased through out the years of things I didn’t need. I will am currently pregnant and I can’t say I won’t buy anything for a year which will be difficult but I will try to buy the minimal and second hand for the big expensive things like crib and stroller.

Just think about how previous generations of women did babies. Washcloth "diaper wipes". Cloth diapers. Breast feed. Puree home cooked food. Lay mattress on floor when baby is too big for laundry basket basinet. Simple baby clothes bought used. Baby bath in kitchen sink. Americans now overspend on babies to such a shockingly obscene level. Don't get caught up in baby rat race.

So true! One thing the no buy has taught me is I would rather have one or two things I really love (even if more expensive) than lots of cheaper things that are never really used - or worse sent to the charity shop with tags on!
@steffijorra15693 жыл бұрын
Since I started in project pans I realized how much unused stuff I have. Corona helped with less buying- but I did not save much. I think I will also check on other things I spend on and I find your video inspiring because I am ashamed to be also guilty on buying for my emotions. And I totally agree of the social Media being a big influence on competition for the best and expensive and not being social at all.
@KirstyKirby3 жыл бұрын
Project pans, or vowing not to buy until some of your stash is used up, are absolutely eye opening! I went mad buying 3-4 years ago and I still have sealed items waiting to be used, its absolutely crazy. Ahh Steffi, please don't feel ashamed, I've shopped to feed an emotion at times for years, and although I'll do my best moving forwards not to, I'm sure I will slip up from time to time. Social Media definitely normalises very expensive items and whilst I would love to own some of these things I sometimes ask myself why, because unless I had LOTS of money I couldn't imagine justifying spending £5000 on a bag or something, I'd be more likely to pay down a mortgage ha ha!
