For the last 12 months I've bought absolutely nothing but essentials, sometimes referred to as a No Buy Year or a No Spend Year. I did this in a bid to save the most money I possibly could, so that not only would this help with my financial goals, but that should the worst happen through this weird time, I'd be ok financially. Through completing a year long no buy (along with other money saving methods) I managed to save more than 50% of my take home salary which is both mind boggling and life changing. I'm fairly certain I will have changed my relationship with money forever.
Whilst completing this no buy year, I also bought no clothing for two years, and I've shared my experience on my channel. If you are looking to do a no buy year, or a smaller goal of a no buy month, be sure to check out my other videos as you may find tips and insights that might help you. Doing a no buy challenge isn't easy, and I don't recommend as a permanent lifestyle, but it certainly has its benefits. You might want to take a slightly less extreme approach and try a low buy year or a low buy month instead - you'll still find plenty of tips here on my channel.
I placed one order for personal care items in the last 12 months and in the interest of transparency, this is what I ordered:
3 x Caudalie Shower Gel (all now used up)
2 x Caudalie Facial Wash (one empty, one still in use)
3 x Caudalie Lip Balms (two empty, one still in use)
2 x Kerastase Shampoo (one empty, one still in use)
2 x Kerastase Conditioner (one empty, one still in use)
Over the last few years, I've come to the realisation that whilst a certain level of material things do add to your life, more stuff will not necessarily make you happier. This realisation hit me when I looked around my home that was filled with stuff (so much so I felt I needed a bigger house) and couldn't say I was particularly happier than when I lived in Spain (in 2008) when everything I had with me fit in one large drawer and a very small wardrobe.
These days I prefer to adopt a buy less, buy better approach, with a focus on quality over quantity, removing the clutter, and utilising my money in the best way possible.

I also heard this from all 4 of my Grandparents, and my Great-Grandmother.! So, we did! MY WWII parents added "is this (car) trip necessary? to save on gas (which was strictly rationed) and to bunch up errands into one trip and plan a circular route and take other people with me and do things together! I still quilt using all our old clothes, make candles and soap (using my Grandmother's recipe) and bread. soups and stews and sauces are good ways to use up leftovers, refinish small wood furniture and make our own music, artwork and scrapbooks etc. never at a loss for something interesting and useful to do!

Absolutely right! I had a full wardrobe and I decided to wear it out before buying anything new. How long did I wait? Four years! FOUR years! I think three times before buying anything now; a very good experience. How much do I save every year? 2 salaries + 26%tax= CAD 10.000.

I started to put away £500 a month. I was planning on leaving my job as I was being bullied. Although I was earning quite a lot it gave me great satisfaction to say "I'm out of here. Do it yourself". I had been leading up to this for maybe 10 years. My health was declining due to workload etc. I also had 3 miscarriages whilst working. I decided to give my body a break and walked out. Everyone thought I was mad. However a year after I managed to have my son who is now 2 and I wouldn't want it any other way. Doing a no buy and pay yourself first was the best thing I have ever done for myself.

Way to go!! Literally, lol. Enjoy your kid, they grow fast...long days and short years, somehow. Pick your battles. I focused on safety and morals...the rest works out(she's 25 and awesome). Buy clothes at thrifts, a lot of stuff is close to new...Kids grow fast. Ask your friends for hand-me-downs if their kid is bigger. And if at some point they wear their sandals on opposite feet...as long as they don't trip...don't trip, if they do it's safety... I think you're absolutely right, thank you. Hello Tara I am sad to hear that your job (workload & stress) took a toll on your health & you had miscarriages. That should not be happened. Nobody should suffer because of jobs. Jobs is for us to practice our skill & knowledge, to give our time for service and in return, we are paid salary. If it starts to be detrimental to our body, soul, hearts, then NO. @@KirstyKirby Just talk to most people over 60, that was a way of life for majority of North Americans..... basics only. Large families and hand me downs. We lived basics unlike what those younger think living basics is today. Outhouse, gas lanterns, water pump outdoors, maybe not all the time, but try a year of that,..... with 7 children in a house and only a wood stove. It is amazing how one can live with basics. When I say basics, I mean toilet paper and a toilet in the house, running water, indoor plumbing, a good heat source, an electric stove, now that is a luxury and many times I forget what life was like for that one year when we were young, and then many years with below poverty level... Basics are sometimes leaving out butter, and no margarine, and no peanut butter. Having bread, fruit and veggies is enough. Meat is a luxury, but that did not hurt us because less meat is good. Watering down shampoo and dish soap. Watering down ketchup bottles to make it last. Absolutely no frills with food, and cosmetics were unheard of, other than the huge bottle of lotion or shampoo. Cheap brands. A huge honking bag of puffed wheat. Ah, the good ol days. :)

I did a 6-month no buy during Spring and Summer last year! My husband and I were, like you said, “aggressively saving,” which we called “financial lockdown.” We were able to pay off both of our cars, and we’re now basically debt-free, which feels amazing. We’ve loosened our budget a bit again, but not buying anything extra for a while has changed us, too!

Financial lockdown - love it! 😂 That’s amazing Keira, fantastic result and I can imagine it feels absolutely brilliant! It will be interesting to see what happens as lockdowns start to lift across the world. Some analysts are predicting a huge bounce back in spending and that lots will spend all their savings in some sort of mad spree - but I’m not so convinced. I think an awful lot of people, like you and I, will have recognised that we need a lot less and will continue to save regardless. Anyway, great to hear from you - being debt free is awesome! Xx

Hi Sarah I know exactly what you mean, doing a no buy has been incredibly eye opening as I too found that over time I was less interested in ‘stuff’. As you say there will always be things we need and I don’t think there’s anything wrong with having things you want - but I’ve found that when I sit back and wait, most of the things I find I’m not that bothered about having. Whilst I officially finished my no buy when filming this, I’ve not bought anything other than one thrifted dress! Good luck with your savings goals, I’ve massively found having this helped me really question if I wanted something. I am currently awaiting exchange on a property and being so close to achieving that goal makes all the ‘sacrifice’ feel completely worthwhile. Xx

Good luck! Yes I used to buy things that were ‘cheap’ and invariably they ended up being sent to the charity shop or binned eventually. I try to just buy only things I really want now, even if they are more expensive.

I sympathise on the take away costs. I looked at my bank statements and discovered I'd spent €427.65 JUST ON PIZZA in 3 months! 😳 Multiply that by 4, and it comes to €1710.60! 😱 For me, that's 3.5 months rent. 🙈

I did a no buy for a year and a half and was able to save money for a downpayment for a whose. Now, knowing how much houses are here in Canada a small simple house in some parts of Ontario now goes for 400k and over. And that's a small house. I even hand washed my own laundry just so that I could save on using the machine. My clothes even came out cleaner than the machine. I felt so fulfilled knowing that I don't need much to live and be happy.

This is why so many Ontarians are moving west for the affordable housing. Met a couple from Orillia this summer who drove all the way to BC looking at real estate along the way and they settled in a small town in Saskatchewan and love it here! He can work from home so is still employed with his company based in Ontario.

I have always disliked shopping and only go to town when I absolutely have to and have a shopping list I go by. Never grocery shop if you are hungry, eat something first. Get out of debt, always pay off credit card when due and set up an emergency fund. I was able to retire at 60 with almost a million saved up and very low living expenses as I live on a ranch and raise most of my own food. Love it!

I did something very similar when saving for a family visit from N Z to the U K. My strategy was to never buy on the day I saw an item but to tell myself I would buy it tomorrow. Needless to say the item was not purchased. The savings in a year that was frugal were amazing. We had our trip and I developed a mindset that said to question myself before spending. Great outcome

Thank you so much for sharing your story Sharron! Yes I relate to that so much, in fact a similar tip of ‘sleep on it’ will be in an upcoming video of how I managed to stick with the no buy. I agree with you, once you start being purposely frugal, especially on things that aren’t really important to you, the savings are amazing. I found I almost enjoyed the challenge of seeing if I could save more and more each month.

Congratulations! The things you highlighted are so true! Over the years, I did make big mistakes but finally stick with a mantra of saving more than spending. I think it’s been a year or so that I keep a budget and still prefer to only spend minimally as a need arises. I continue to use what I have - it’s amazing how long things last when you just use them in a normal everyday life way. I started putting a sticker on for example my face cleanser when I opened it (started using) and it helped me see that I truly only need to buy a face cleanser twice a year so then I can buy two for the year if I see a good sale.
@KirstyKirby

You are so right. When I initially did my makeup no buy I found it shocking how long things take to use up, I’m still using up things I bought 3 years ago! 🤦‍♀️ it’s so easy to fall into bad habits of ‘just’ buying this or that and can be so hard to get out of. I think we are often shopping to induce a certain feeling, yet there are just as great feelings that come from saving, like security, options, etc etc xx

The metal colander is new at the neighbors, so you pay .25 for a new metal collander versus $ 1.00 at the!! dollar store

I’m glad I found your video, I’m currently not working due to mental health reasons so a no buy year would be very helpful. I do have savings and if they can last a bit longer that would certainly take some pressure off. Medical bills aren’t going anywhere for sometime. So me thinks this starts now. Wish me luck 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻

Thanks Pollie for such a sweet comment! You’ve hit it on the head, not smug about it (still surprised I managed it myself), and don’t recommend it as a permanent lifestyle, but I got far more out of the experience than I expected and it has changed the way I shop, likely forever. Thank you for watching 😊 xx

watching this in 2022. Thank you so much for sharing this is amazing and I am planning on doing a year of no buying. I definitely bought way too much last year and have always probably spent most of my money on things that are not necessary. In the recent months I’ve just realized that I am really not happy with my financial life and I want to make a change for the better so that I can start investing my money in things that matter. Again thank you so much for sharing and you have helped me on my journey, wish me luck.

It does. I wouldn’t recommend as a permanent way of life (unless someone wanted to of course) but my shopping habits have changed completely since the experience, even a year on.

It helped me lots! I never shop out of habit or boredom now and would rather just have a few high quality items than lots and lots of things.

This is really lovely as are you! This year I took on a seasonal job that got me working in the woods - no phone, no signal, no shops. My relationship with shopping has definitely changed. I mean, I save every month anyway and I'm relatively careful with buying now but simultaneously it's mad to think my savings would probably last a year if for some reason I became completely unemployed!
@KirstyKirby
@KirstyKirby 5 ай бұрын
Ah that’s really kind of you to say. You never know when those savings might come in handy, I found myself unemployed and then took a job that was a massive pay cut just to keep the wolf from the door whilst I looked for something appropriate - it’s been awful but made so much easier by having savings. I don’t think I’d have gotten through it without. Thankfully I’m back in a job that pays reasonably well but things could have been so much worse without large savings. X

This is so wholesome and profound. I did a no-buy month and it felt great! I did not feel restricted at all. Would be tough to do this for a whole year but I am up for the challenge

Thanks Diane! I never set out to do a year when I started, maybe 3-6 months just to increase my savings but once I got going it almost became a bit of a game to see how long I could go for. Good luck if you do decide to go for a longer period and thanks for watching 😊

Great message Kirsty, I’m amazed that you did it. Means I can do it too. 💪This is my first year living in a new place and I just realized I spent lots of my income for buying things that I don’t really need. I glad that I saw your video before 2022. This will be my 2022 goal.

I've just found your channel. I loved this video. I totally agree with you about social media. People want everyone to think they have the perfect life. Those are usually the people who have the least perfect life. I have done no buy months. Would love to try a no buy year. It just seems so hard. But I may give it a try.

Don’t worry if you can’t do a year. I did mine to try and buy a house but it was also through some of the lockdowns. I think it would have been far harder to achieve if we hadn’t been forced to be at home and not go anywhere

Since I started in project pans I realized how much unused stuff I have. Corona helped with less buying- but I did not save much. I think I will also check on other things I spend on and I find your video inspiring because I am ashamed to be also guilty on buying for my emotions. And I totally agree of the social Media being a big influence on competition for the best and expensive and not being social at all.

Project pans, or vowing not to buy until some of your stash is used up, are absolutely eye opening! I went mad buying 3-4 years ago and I still have sealed items waiting to be used, its absolutely crazy. Ahh Steffi, please don't feel ashamed, I've shopped to feed an emotion at times for years, and although I'll do my best moving forwards not to, I'm sure I will slip up from time to time. Social Media definitely normalises very expensive items and whilst I would love to own some of these things I sometimes ask myself why, because unless I had LOTS of money I couldn't imagine justifying spending £5000 on a bag or something, I'd be more likely to pay down a mortgage ha ha!
