Serious stuff, as a new Shopify user without any coding experience I was thoroughly frustrated with Shopify's lack of customization on the pages that are not the homepage. After seeing this video I immediately updated to the dawn theme, thanks for notifying us! I think it would be super interesting for us viewers without coding experience to learn more about customizing 2.0 shops, like changing the default colour buttons to swatches etc.

Jan - Thanks for the introduction. Can you please include a video on custom product fields? Myself and others are looking how a customer can go about including custom data (e.g. text) before adding item to cart. This data should follow the item to the shopping cart and be available for review in the admin end. I hope this explains it... Thanks!

I'm an experienced react/graphql/node developer working from Brazil. My experience with Shopify is this. Brazilian payment providers simply refuse to work with us. They only want to work with huge revenue generating ecommerce sites. They took our call but effectively told us to fuck off. I was forced to move to a Shopify look a like platform in Brazil that only uses REST. I am writing a graphql wrapper for it.

Hi Jan, Thanks for such an informative video. Is there any possibility to use sections in the product description? I think this is one of the features that many sellers were eagerly looking into. I see many big brands use rich content in their product description, I wish that was possible with inbuilt Shopify options.

Dawn theme is default available in shopify 2.0 version.

Not a silly question 😃 If you have an older store you can searchi for "shopify Dawn github" on Google, download it from there, and directly upload the zip file to your store. :-)

Great videos. Wondering if there is a way to change the header on the home page for 2.0. I'm not seeing any themes that have the older style (supply theme) of a search bar, larger cart button w/ text and then the actual text to sign in. We have an older customer base and icons only like we're seeing on 2.0 will confuse them. They need to be able to read the words.

Hey Bryan, in case you want to have multiple different pages, and build different landing pages fast (sections everywhere), dawn would be a good idea. If you only have very few pages narrative would also work. That being said, no theme is 100% perfect. There's always this one thing we'd like to change or the one button we would like to look slightly different. So that's where development comes into play :-)

How do I know if I am on 2.0 or not? I am using debut, it kind of looks like 2.0 but I'm not sure. If I have the ability to make metafields, does that mean I'm on 2.0? You went through it a bit quickly - I made the metafield just fine, but I don't see how I can apply that field to a product page or have it show up in product pages from now on.

Hey Daniel, so it mainly depends on the theme you use. You can check if most files in your template folder have a .json extension. Or you could also test in the customizer. If you can use the same homepage sections on every other page, then it's a 2.0 theme :-)

The free theme Debut is NOT 2.0. You can check the Theme Store and see which theme has "OS 2.0" written on the image itself. There are currently only 18 themes out of 72 paid ones that have been updated to 2.0. Hope this helps.

Hey Shaxa, awesome to meet you. 😃 If you want to store merchant specific data, you'll definitely need your own database. Personally I like regular SQL Databases, but some people also prefer using MongoDB. And as the stores have to authenticate against your app, you can retrieve the user from there. Hope that helps :-)
