it wasnt that long ago that irish celtic was spoken as a mother tongue in certain areas of newfoundland. Generally speaking, the catholic newfies speak like irish, and the protestant newfies speak like west country english.

When I first moved away from home (Newfoundland) I was so so homesick. I was dropping my son off at daycare one morning and I heard this glorious (what thought to be) Newfoundland accent and practically bowled this poor lady off of her feet. Turns out she was Irish and probably saved my sanity. Through her I met this AMAZING Irish community in Saskatchewan and it was like I was home again! Every weekend there was a kitchen party, my traditional music was their traditional music, our holiday traditions were the same and most importantly, THEY KNEW WHAT A CLOTHES LINE WAS!! (Everyone else looked at me like was insane when I asked where to buy one). They were amazed I could sing along with all their songs 😂

My family is irish and originated on an island off the coast of blacksod, Mayo. On an island called Inishkea. I recently visited the abandoned island and was told if I were to sail for hours north of where we were facing, I would come across Newfoundland. And that’s what the Irish did. That’s why all these Canadians have Irish language and culture 😅 such a fascinating thing
@brianm28812 жыл бұрын
There is this legendary account of the Irish saint, St Brendan, who was supposed to have undertaken a journey out into the sea to the west of Ireland, i.e. the Atlantic, some time in the 6th century, along with some other monks. Tim Severin, the explorer, did a recreation of the voyage in a replica of the type of boat that would have been available at the time and took a route through the North Atlantic that he felt would have best suited Brendan's cryptic account of the voyage, and he landed the boat at Newfoundland. So, there is a tenuous theory that Brendan may have actually been the first European to set foot on the North American continent.

No it’s not. Newfoundland was a British Colony for most of its history, not connected to the rest of North America. That’s why SOME Newfoundlanders have Irish language and culture. There’s also a significant Anglican population of English ancestry here who have different accents and a different culture.
