Shopping cart lock (latch) dissected

I always wondered what was inside of those devices used to prevent shopping cart theft. Recently I had the opportunity to acquire such a device so I dissected it.

Thanks for the video. After watching it and seeing the mechanism, I made a pick from an old credit card. It's just a strip with one end rounded out to simulate a coin. Works like a charm. The beauty is, I can remove it easily. Took me about 5 min. to make it.

1. if you cut a bit of the coin, you can rotate it, and pull it out after releasing the chain. My personal magic fake coin. you don't have to return cart to the others, and next customer get free cart too. 2. if you want someone else's coin out, you just grab the visible bit with good pliers and pull hard. The plastic will let it go to save the lock. My personal trick to get pocket money from carts being lost in the wild and far from the shop.

It will work on this device but the new ones that they put have a little drawer where you put the coin and then slide the coin in so no access to the coin once it is in. I don't care about putting the fake coin in but sometimes it is annoying when there is no spare cart left to release it (although I did print out 20 of them).

That one has a key with a hole and 3 tips. The center is the active and the 2 cutouts in the front, are for the fences around the activator. Make a wire, with a curve around the Ball to release. To lock, there is a small metal pin in the left side of coin room. Close the drawer half way. Press the metal switch with the new wire tool, or the tip of a random key. Push the drawer in. When it so closed, that your key is blocking, pull the key out, and push the drawer the rest of the way in to release the cart. The small curved cutout in the top, is perfect space for your key, when you close it enough for the switch to get by the critical spot.
