You might consider joining the Association of Residents of Costa Rica (ARCR) that assists people moving to CR. Do can hire a reputable atty there to help you with the purchase of property. Or you can hire a good atty through the American Embassy's referral list. Beware of crooked deals

Absolutely! I could not agree more. Regardless of where you are from, things work differently in Costa Rica. Buying a particular place has so many do's and don'ts and can's and can'ts. Hiring a reputable property attorney will help ensure you get what you are expecting and limit surprises. Water rights, land uses, how the property paperwork is structured etc etc. Anyone can be a realtor in Costa Rica. ANYONE. Do not buy anything without a reputable lawyer being involved.

And most important...stay away from touristy areas and save 50% over your cost of living & better your security. We have been extremely happy with it and are trying to get out as much as possible to see all that this wonderful country has to offer. Most of the ones we looked into were around $250 USD per month for HOA fees. These fees cover ground maintenance, pool maintenance and security (if they have it). Pacifico was over $600 per month I am told.
