The Centro is always pretty full of visitors. For almost 30 years. Every weekend, people come from all over the country and even from the Netherlands. It's actually a very clean mall too. And I've never experienced any violence there. The cleaners and security do a good job. However, appearances are somewhat deceptive. I'm actually often in Oberhausen, and a few hundred meters further on in the old town you get a completely different picture. Many of the buildings are empty and there are lots of alcohol and drug addicts. So don't think that the cities in Germany are particularly clean and safe. They haven't been for a long time.

This is so funny. I grew up in Oberhausen-Osterfeld and know this mall very well. It has developed since it opened about 20 years ago. A sad fact, after Centro opened, the shops in the Oberhausen Innenstadt slowly died. Business just left them for the mall. I don't understand how it works here in the US. We have a huge mall in the Woodlands and hundreds of small shops all around. Everyone is doing fine here. Thank you for the videos.
@riptors97772 ай бұрын
Thats because germans like to do their shopping in one place. Also old cities like Oberhausen barely have any parking spots, so actually getting close to the city center where most of the stores would be located is less comfortable then just going to the Centro that has massive parking spaces. Its a matter of convinience really. German cities are for the most part very tight on space and not nearly as attractive or modern as the centro presents itselfe. The cleanlyness and security you have at centro is also something you wont find in most old small cities around germany. So as allways, local politicians are the issue... they focused on centro and left the inner city shops to drown. Add the dominance of Amazon and online shopping ontop of that and the rising cost of rent and electricity and little shops simply cant compete anymore.
