I'm so sorry that I keep referring to The Netherlands as "Holland" throughout this video - I am so annoyed at myself! Because I live in Zuid Holland, it's easy to get caught up when I'm speaking and say Holland. This is not right - there is much more to The Netherlands than just Holland. I sincerely apologize and will try to be more mindful in future videos!
@NeoOnyx5 жыл бұрын
You don't have to apologize. Lots of Dutch people refer to the Netherlands as Holland, unless they live outside of North/South-Holland. Some of them can be quite anal about it. If you ask a Dutch person where they're from (when they are in another country), they will always say Holland (if they answer you in English, in Dutch they will always say Nederland). I also live in The Hague (born and raised), and as far as I'm concerned, you dotted the 'i's and crossed the 't's with your list of stores and popular websites. The only thing is that the Megastores aren't a nationwide chain. I think it can only be found in The Hague. Your video's are very informative, you are pleasant to look at and you are very eloquent. Your video's aren't buried under annoying music and you thoroughly research the topic before making a video. So great job! :-)

Yeah, any Dutchman that gives you crap about it are the biggest hypocrites. All you have to point to is "Hup Holland hup, laat de leeuw niet in z'n hempie staan". One of THE most popular slogans in "Holland" ever :) Plus, saying "The Netherlands" in English is such a mouthful, where saying "Holland" is much easier. I'm sure that that is actually why saying "Holland" is much more popular. As a native Dutchman who speaks fluent English, I will say "Holland" probably 8 times out of 10 when speaking English. When I'm speaking Dutch, however, I will say "Nederland" 10 out of 10 times, never "Holland" (with the exception of slogans like the above and a few others).

In the south, we have a chain grocery store called Jan Linders. They have a lot of local products and some seasonal products you probably won't find in the north or middle of the country. They're relatively cheap, but not like Aldi or Lidl. A tip: always look for what's on sale. Most stores have an app, where you find all sales, promotions, and often even your customer card. If you have a customer card, you could even find some personal discounts, so if you often go to Albert Heijn, for example, you might want to give it a try.

Notes from a local: Electronics & white goods: coolblue.nl. Very good customer service, and only a little more expensive than Mediamarkt. They also have six physical storefronts (mostly consisting of customer service departments) in the major cities. Amazon.nl exists now, but only as a storefront for Kindle books. Amazon really wants you to use amazon.de, it will deliver free from 30 euros (and you can buy Prime for it). UK, FR, etc usually don’t deliver for free or only from high numbers. Bol.com is now actually owned by Ahold aka Albert Heijn Holdings, an exchange-traded company who also own the AH stores. Nobody has good customer experience at Mediamarkt. It’s like they’re trained how not to satisfy customers. Hornbach is a privately owned German company, and always has been apart from a 21% stake with a UK investment firm.

Hey jovie, great vlog again😘. I like wehkamp if i have to buy something expensive and can't spend the full price right away because they let you pay in installments, yess with interest but i have been in a pinch twice when my washing machine and refrigerator broke down. For clothes and shoes i think wehkamp is much more expensive . I love bol.com but i always do price checks on google and often find an online store who sells the same product for a lower price. My preference on supermarkets are Jumbo and lidl, just because of the prices. In kwantum they also sell curtains and blinds as well as some small hardware items, furniture, paint, light fixtures etc. My favorite hardware store is karwei because it is closetst to my home (Den Bosch ) and i don't drive a car😁. We have what you would call in America mini mall, with almost everything we need (clothes, shoes, drugstores, supermarkets, phone shops, bakkery, green grocer etc) , about a 7 minut walk from home.

For funiture you can also try a 2nd hand store. Some of them buy good stuff and even high end pieces that are as good as new. Last years I bought an american wallnut cubboard for €95 at an 2nd hand store; elsewhere I saw a simular, new one for €1000,-. After some negotiation they even delivered it for free. If you want a dishwasher or something, go MediaMarkt and look for the artikel you want and what it costs (buy don't buy it there). Then go to the local store, negotiate about the price (you don't like MM, you rather buy local, they have better service, but you don't want to pay more). You can also negotiate over the deliverycosts and the 'verwijderingsbijdrage' (costs for removal and destruction of old appliencies which come on top of your purcaise in advance). Most time they will make you a good offer, some even lower then MM. And in most local stores for clothes, appliencies, furniture a.s.o. you can try to get a (smal) discount, you can always ask, even when you don't get one. Greetings, Eric

Tuinland is pretty cool too. Not only do they carry plants and other stuff for the garden, but they also have very nice decorative items. One brand they sell is Riverdale and they have very nice cushions, photo frames, candleholders and what not. If you like plantbased cosmetics and makeup, you should definitely check out Yves Rocher (there is one in the center of Den Haag). If you get their free customer card, there will be a tree planted and you can collect points with every purchase and 3000 points means you can choose a product from their store. They are also online.

Debet cards do not have to be Dutch actually, as long as they are within the Maestro (I think it's a joint-venture thing) program (the logo looks awfully similar to the Mastercard-logo) you can use them on any payment terminal that has the maestro-logo (I have yet to come accross machines in The Netherlands that do not participate in it, actually). I think it's more of a problem that the US, when it comes to banking cards has been geared towards credit cards instead of debet cards and that is the biggest problem. (It could be though that there are not that much American banking companies that participate in the Maestro-program and as such have cards you are unable to use here. Some might work but ask a small refund for the transaction conversion, I think.) I think the middle-ground-shops you are looking for are actually the drugstores like Kruidvat, Etos and Trekpleister, some of the same products are in supermarkets but can be more expensive there, the thing below those two are shops (sometimes pop-up stores to fill an otherwise empty store building) that sell leftover or execution bulk-sets of products (toothpaste, shampoo) from the same brands in the drugstores, but at a lower price than in the drugstores (it's not always an awful amount you save, but it can add up when you buy in big quantities, and sometimes those kind of stores sell the bigger packages the drugstores do not sell. If I am not mistaking, the Marqt is more geared towards the catering industry and like the Makro you need to have some kind of proof you are an entrepeneur. Hehe difference between Karwei and Leen Bakker is always something I explain as "When you want to built something from scratch, you go to the Karwei, when you want a piece of furniture that you need to put together by reading building instructions, you go to Leen Bakker". Karwei, Gamma and Praxis are actually the three biggest home improvement stores, Hornbach is more catered towards garden improvement (We do not have a Hornbach in my city, so I have absolutely no idea if they have extended their assortment since the last time I was inside one and I might now be saying all kinds of things that are wrong :P). De Tuinen has a competitor that goes by whatever name the franchiseholder has for it, but usually starts with "Bio - name of the franchiseholder" (in my city it's called "Bio Rosa") and sells the same things. De Bijenkorf is actually best viewed as more of a warehouse type of store.

@@JoviesHome Ah, that might be because in those countries there have been cases where a fraudulent ATM was put up to skim PIN-cards en masse or the cases of theft simply was to high for banks to still allow banking cards to work without a specific request from the user to be able to use them there. Some countries require a specific permission (requested by the owner of the card itself) to use the card outside of The Netherlands (and vice-versa as well, I would guess), which, with some banks can be "every foreign country" or "countries with a high risk for attempts of fraude with or theft of banking cards".

For anyone confused about calling a store Babydump, a dump is a type of store that buys products at a discount in bulk and sell those for a discounted price as well, probably most like surplus stores. This concept originally started as military surplus stores. No babies were being dumped. :p

I wish I had found your channel when I first moved here. I searched for English speaking channels living in the NL to no avail. Regardless I've been here over a year now and I really miss the great USA sales I had access to before moving here but I'm make do with what's available here. I have the nee/nee sticker and still get junk mail. It's so annoying but nothing I can do as I've never caught the spammer lol. Great video and I'll go and get caught up with the rest of your content lol.

Hi Johanna, thanks so much for your kind compliment! Yes, I too miss the great sales and the abundance of Marshalls, Targets, and other shops like those. And the access to "petite" clothing! I cannot buy trousers/pants in NL and usually shop for those in France when visiting my aunt. I wonder why the spammer would ignore your nee/nee stickers? Thanks for watching my channel, I have a lot of fun stuff planned for the coming months, so I hope you stick around :)

The best super market in the netherlands used to be the Konmar in the 90's and 80's because it had a wide range of products across the cheap to expensive board. it had great products and service. But sadly it was bought out by the Jumbo who tried (and failed) to be a bit like the Konmar during the early 2000's before becoming what its now. Same with the C1000. I always saw them as the budget Konmar a bit cheaper, with more ready-made meals and cheaper chips. But then Jumbo gobbled them up too and also tried to seem like them for a bit before changing back to standard Jumbo. which is just expensive imo. Lidle is the one I like the most now. Especially the bread section

Recently, I have started to order more from the bol.com's etc, and less from Amazon. Reason? Delivery time. For e.g. electronics and media the default quoted delivery with Amazon seems to be a week (even though it is usually delivered slightly earlier than that). It is being going on for more than an year now, trying to push people to Amazon Prime maybe? Very annoying though.

That's so weird and rude to use a shopping cart, you're not supposed to take it outside the supermarket parking lot.
@michellezevenaar5 жыл бұрын
@@liannefee9638 I'm not saying keep the shopping cart forever, just bring it back the next day. This isn't the US we're every supermarket has an over sized parking lot. Here alot of people walk with the shopping cart all the way home then walk it back after they put their groceries away. It's really no big deal as long as you don't vandalize it.

@@michellezevenaar I think we have a different eye on that. You can get money from any ATM with you Creditcard. And you don’t need to have a ‘dutch’ debit card. The Netherlands are actually really debit card friendly. (Compared to Belgium and Germany who often don’t accept other than local debit cards) We don’t use credit cards because of the way we deal with money. In the Netherlands it used to be not common to pay on credit. The general point of view is that you buy when you can pay for it, so you save up. This is changing a bit nowadays. Stores pay for the pin-machines they have, and they have to pay an additional fee for Creditcard’s, so depending on where these stores are and the service they offer they have this added ‘bonus’ of credit card use. Regularly in the big cities they often have it, lots of tourists and expats. Restaurants have the credit card option often too. Karwei is a hardware store like Gamma and Praxis, it is owned now by Gamma and they focus more on the female shopper, that’s why they added a lot of ‘’’’’’female’’’’’ stuff. Hornbach is german and tries to concur our market. Important to know: the main difference between the Netherlands and the US / Canada is that traditionally/generally shops are in the city or town center. Bigger hardware stores and retail stores are nowadays more outside the center on designated areas. :) The Tuinen is now called Holland&Barrett. I do think it’s so sweet that you made this video. When I moved to Canada I found it so challenging where to go and how things worked! A video like this would have been really helpful! Although KZbin then was only just launched 😂!

Hi Lizzy, thanks for your comment and compliment. Re debit cards, my in-laws come from Spain and they have trouble using their Spanish debit cards often; as does my French aunt. So I am totally confused about the debit issue 😂. You made me lol about Karwei and their “female” merchandise! I appreciate your support and hope to see you again today for a fun video 🎉
@lizzyscorner5 жыл бұрын
Jovie's Home hi Jovie, I didn’t know that. We always have had multiple debit card service acceptance here, maybe things have change the last couple of years? And yes that strange Karwei policy.. Karwei used to be independent and a normal hardware store. It had a name of being slightly expensive (as did praxis) especially compared to gamma. The lost the competition, Gamma took over and had to changed the strategy.

On ordering groceries online (is applicable to all services). For the smokers among is (i don't yuk). But if you wan't to order sigaretes with the groceries remember they can at the door at home only be received by someone 18 years or older. Same with Alcohol and medicine (yes some deliverers will cheat but rule is rule). Also don't forget that groceries are deliverd in crates (klapkratten). You pay a return fee (Statiegeld) for them. On the next order you can return those with the delivery guy/girl, the amount (4 euro's per klapkrat) will be deducted. But on your first order you pay the 4 euro's times X number of crates. Crates can NOT be returned to the regular shops. They can be returned but every shop has their own rules about that so best call customer service for that.

Do you know of any stores (specialy groceries and electronics) that offer price matching like we see in Canada and the States? So far it seems they don't have the use of doing that here, but it would be something quite useful if you have to go to the physical store and one is closer to you, or if you want to buy all your groceries in one store and apply the discount from the others like we are used to overseas 😁
