You might find balancing and steering easier if you can put most of the weight of the shopping on the back of the bike in some panniers ('fietstassen'), evenly divided on both sides. You can still use the elastic 'snelbinders' to tie stuff on top of the back rack. Especially as long your son is small enough to carry in the handlebar seat as well, all that (sometimes wriggly) weight on the front doesn't make it easy to steer. Very good that you managed it all safely!
@josphineogugua2 жыл бұрын
Hi Hanneke, Thanks for this suggestion. I’ve recently been considering getting the fiestassen myself. I think it will help better with weight distribution. Thanks again🤗

If you are going from shop to shop make sure you always bring everything you buy into the next shop. When I just met my ( now for 25 years ) Philipin wife, she went to buy some groceries. On the way home she made one more stop at a shop, but left the groceries in the fietstassen. When she came out of the shop there was a homeless guy standing next to her bike eating from a bag of kroepoek ( prawn crisps ) that he took from her fietstassen. Acting as if it was the most normal thing to do. Both my wife as I thought it was hilarious and from time to time we still make jokes about it when we go out on our bikes to do some shopping. But it was a good lesson for her to never leave anything on her bike when she parks it at merely the price of a bag of kroepoek 🤣

I am from the Netherlands too and always used to do all the groceries for family of 5 on the bike. Big basket in front on steeringwheel. Two big bags left and right on the back of the bike. Usually a basket or crate on top of back luggage carrier. And when there was not enough space with that also a bag left and right on front wheel. All totally normal in my country. Although nowadays there are a lot of bakfietsen that you can stock up with your groceries. Here we don’t take a car that quickly when we can do it by bike 😄

As others have already mentioned, I would strongly suggest bike bags on the back of your bike for better weight distribution and better balance. It makes it safer to ride your bike, and you'll have more storage space, in case you need to buy more than usual. Also: Never tie your bags to your steering rod!
@Freya762 жыл бұрын
Do agree with the fietstassen but hanging stuff from your handlebars is something I have always done. As long as you are careful nothing gets in-between the spokes of your front wheel. I used to go grocery shopping with one child up front, one child on the back with fietstassen and double shopping bags at the handle bars 😅

I also just came across your channel and it was so fun to watch, it gives you a better picture of what it's like for foreigners, who came to live here, by choice or bc they had to. If you don't mind it, I would like to ask you something. I live in a small town and it used to be a prodominantly white neighbourhood, but in the last decade or so, more families of African decent, also from other places ofcause came to live here and their children play with white kids, but you still see little to no interaction between the adults, not on a level that you can go to their home or vice versa. What's your experience and do you have some advise for me, because I love to know them and maybe I can help in ways that you mentioned in a former video post, like babysitting, help with the language or just talk English, so they can ask me things, they may not dare to ask to someone they hardly know. Thank you so much, I hope more foreign mothers here see this content, I will give you a shout out on Twitter, huge following there, not Dutch though, mostly American, my other home. You have a lovely family, your son, what a cutie🙏🏼 Have you eaten more Dutch dishes since your post with your husband, who's a cute father btw, and if so, do you like it? I mash everything and put lots of gravy on it! 🤗 Nice meeting you and your family.

Hi Monique, First I want to say, Thank you so much for your comment, for being so kind. I mean to even think of ways to better communicate with your neighbors just shows your heart and thank you for that🤗. My suggestion would be to maybe speak to them first. I think they might not want to start a conversation but once you kick off the conversation, there are chances they will respond and warm up. Maybe conversations about the kids and how lovely they are and maybe how you're open to hang out with the adults too and maybe visit an exciting place in the city together? I think once you ask, they will at least respond and it could be the start of friendships 🤗. I hope this helps

I always have headphones on when I cycle. I cycle half an hour to work, which is so much more enjoyable wearing headphones. It's pretty safe if you just use your eyesight properly. Always assume something might be coming from somewhere you can't see properly, and approach crossings like that slowly. I've also never been stopped by police officers or anything. Wearing headphones in traffic is pretty common.
