This is so helpful. I became visually impaired 4 months ago. I have been receiving orientation and mobility.

It is very helpful because Orientation and Mobility training is something that everyone needs and you learn a lot in School but he reminds you what you learned and adds things to it from what he says in the video.

It will be getting easier for you the more you practice your cane skills and learn how to identify the pavement change. Make sure to always listen for the traffic sounds because that is very important when you want to cross the street. You will learn how to know how far away from you it is and how much time you have to cross.

That is a great tip. Because of the Corona Virus they have moved a lot of things from where you remember them so you need to do this now to not bump into everything. It helps to have someone else with you too to help you pay for things and I have asked the employee at the checkout to help me out too with that and do it for me and they tell me what the total amount is and what they are doing and ask me questions like do you want money back? So you can get the employees there to help you shop and I have done that too but I always need someone to drive me there so they always load it up for me and take it in for me at home so that all helps me a lot too. Shopping is something that you always need help with in some ways and like I said you need someone else to drive me there and then back home again so you are always scheduling it around other people to help you get it done.

I think everyone does it this way most of the time anyway unless like I said you have an employee help you out but you still always need your driver anyway you are doing it.

Hi Mike,I definately have that problem when I am shopping cart,I always lose my mom in the grocery store.I will eventually find my mom sometimes with some help.It is getting a bit easier to shop by myself but it a slow process and tires me out due to the cataracts interfering with my very low vision but I get it done and I only buy a certain amount of groceries but not a lot of groceries, then my mom picks me up and drives me home

I am 5’2” and m husband is 6’3”. I only shop with him. If I hold the cart he pulls me off my feet by going too fast or using too long a stride. I do better just using my cane and walking next to and slightly behind him. Also, people react to me much better with a cane than without. Without it, I am far more vulnerable to accidents or incidents because people don’t know I am blind.

Mike,as an o&m specialist instructor what tips and advice can you give an adult with very low vision and cataracts to get around better with a white cane?

Hi Mike Mulligan o and m,I do fairly well when I go shopping but I find it tiring and when I go shopping at Walmart with my white cane,Most staff or employees do a really good job helping me to find some items and I thank them, but when I shop at Walmart some of the ladies that work there are not very helpful, they only tell me that your item are over there in that isle which does not help me at all .Do you have any tips or ideas that I can get more help or how to educate some of the ladies to be more specific on where exactly the items are on the shelf area

Talk to the store manager. Offer to train staff in how to help a blind shopper. Advocate for yourself and others.
