When circle hooks were all the rage ~20 years ago I tried them and lost a few good fish so went back to J hooks. A year or so ago I bought some pre-made rigs not knowing they were circle hooks, gave them a go and now I love them. What you say is 100% correct in that they grab the corner of the mouth and rarely (if ever) gut hook. They key is not to whack the fish too hard when they bite - just a lift of the rod will do the trick! BTW I am really enjoying your videos - thank you.

@@TheFishLockerHi John, I just wanted to say that we get gummy sharks here as well in Sth. Aust and they are nice eating but only if you dispatch them, fillet and then skin them fast. Like all sharks they urinate through their skin so if you put them whole on ice and keep them for a few hours the meat will have a strong ammonia taste. One other thing, ours do have teeth but they are small and rounded so only used as crushers, much like a stingray and they do have a nice hard bite if they grab you. No lasting damage though.

I caught a couple last weekend just under the 10lb mark, there was a bit of a swell, was using a 2 hook flapper with size 2 aberdeens and a bass rod, fishing for flatties etc but these showed up. Lost the starry right at my feet, tried to wash it up onto the rocks, swell dropped and sucked fish out, straighted my hook out and it was gone. I had to be careful of the swell. Caught it on rag. Excellent session. We crush the barbs on the hooks and have not lost 1 fish all season. Try it and it's easier to get the hooks out. I use hard backs. Saves a fortune on buying bait. Nearly all my sessions on the hounds have been caught with in 30mins. Like you say Pack attack. Still not caught a Tope from the beach but there is all ways next year

When they’re on it they’ll take hards but I always find the extra scent of a peeler is killer!!

For me to see fish on the bite, that would be extremely fun. Especially the sound of a rattling reel peeling off line from the spool. Thanks for the video love the sunset on the background too.
