How to catch walleye from shore. There are tremendous walleye shore fishing opportunities across the Midwest on small rivers each spring. This video was filmed on the Sheyenne River in eastern North Dakota.
Jason Mitchell joins Ben Olson from Grand Forks Scheels to showcase this great walleye fishing opportunity that anybody can enjoy without a lot of equipment.

my local small rivers offer some fantastic shore fishing in spring and fall. alls you need is some 6lb mono an 1/8 oz jig head and a mister twister tube or a paddle tail bait. the real secret is a hand tied bucktail jig

I am going to be in Winnipeg, Canada, this summer, probably in June. It looks like there are a number of potential riverbank "spots" in the near vicinity. Since I'll have limited time, no experience fishing for walleye*, no specific gear*, and am fishing for table fare**, I am thinking my best bet is probably locally purchased nightcrawlers or minnows. I DO have some weighted jigs (hook plus weight only) both painted and plain lead. Will there be good numbers of walleye in the rivers at that time & location? Any further pointers? *No walleye in my home area (too far south.) **I'm not worried too much about deep hook sets as I am fishing for table fare. Thanks!
@JasonMitchellOutdoors

There is some excellent walleye fishing around Winnipeg. Basically every tributary or river that flows into Lake Winnipeg will have a walleye population. There will be some fish in the rivers in June. On small rivers, focus on any spot below a dam, lock or rapid. The Assissiboine River is excellent. I would check in with the bait shops.

@@jonc.5310 when I was a kid, the river was really low so we mostly caught suckers, bullheads, perch, creek chubs and pumpkinseed sunfish but we did catch some small pike and a few walleyes. When the river started running higher, we started seeing more walleye. I know people that get a few smallmouth today out of the river. They just started stocking smallmouth in Darling when I was a kid.

Question: are Walleye bottom feeding types (meaning swim baits and jigs only?) or will they go for top-water lures as well like Whopper Ploppers? Most of my tackle box is tailored to Pike (because here in Saskatchewan, pike, some walleye and the occasional perch are all we get.)

So do these fish live in the river the whole life are what lakes would they be coming out of to run up the river ?

Assume many of these fish come out of Ashtabula but there has to be some fish that live in the river all year especially when the river was high. Might be different this summer as low as the water is.

Does jig fishing work in muddy water? My local lake Upper Lake Mary, Flagstaff, AZ, is very rocky & has a permanent visibility of about 1ft-to-chocolate milk... walleye & northern pike, primarily. They say there's some trout, crappie & a few bass in there too, but I've never caught any. So far, I have caught all my fish(pics on my channel community page!) on crankbaits, minnow lures & spinnerbaits. Caught a walleye about as long as my arm 2 days ago on a spinnerbait in about 4ft of water. I grew up bass fishing in Oklahoma, so walleye & pike are a new thing for me. I am trying to learn all I can.

Cool video, I did get a laugh though. You don't need expensive boats or electronics, but seeing as most of the river is on private land you do need to be a land owner!
@JasonMitchellOutdoors
@JasonMitchellOutdoors 3 жыл бұрын
You do need permission on private property but there are many property owners to ask. Just like getting permission to hunt, be respectful. There are also some great public locations especially below some of the dams and you can also canoe or kayak.
