Tourism is huge for the economy of Mexico, but at what cost to the natural landscape of the region? One diver shows the impact of plastic pollution off the coast of the most popular beaches.

The Caribbean coastline of the Yucatán Peninsula is famous for its beautiful beaches, clear blue water, and diversity of wildlife. But under the surface of the water lies a different story.
As the world continues to churn out millions of tonnes of plastic each year, more and more of it ends up in the ocean and on our shores. If we don’t reduce our plastic use, experts say that by 2050 there will be more plastic in the ocean than there are fish.
This film follows diver Tamara Adame as she battles the growing plastic waste that plagues Yucatán’s fragile reefs, marine life, and even her own livelihood.
This is Mermaids Against Plastic: Tamara, a Free Roaming Studios production.

By committing yourself no matter what you are not going to use it. 1) Always carry a backpack or a carry bag made out of cloth. 2) Always keep plastic bottles clean and separate them from the ordinary garbage. 3) When doing online purchase always open products in such a manner that plastic can be reused. 4) Give the accumulated everyday plastic to poor / homeless bottle collectors instead of throwing it in garbage. 6) Carry things in hand not in plastic bags when doing grocery shopping, put on a habit of saying no to shop keepers. In case you missed to notice point no 5 above, then go back to the very start of my comment and usedit as the missing point.

Banning single use plastic is not really a great solution, and can be counter productive. Banning non-biodegradable single use plastic is a great solution, and getting tougher on pollution is. Plastic is fantastic, but especially single use plastic that may have only hours or minutes of use should definitely be made of plastic which are compostable, and will deteriorate quickly and safely if they get into nature.

we suffer a mass psychosis by continuing to use single-use plastics without remorse or concern for the waste and pollution. alas, the architects of capitalism never were held accountable for their deception and reckless abuse.

That happens in most restaurants and caffes in Portugal (and, I believe, EU). It's a great solution. Some beer companies also offer it at supermarkets. Should be used more widely. Machines wash and scan each and every bottle for its integrity. If it passes, it gets reused.

I’ve been going to years now significantly reduce single use plastic, and recycling all the cardboard that I use. You’d be surprised how little plastic you can use when you stop drinking sugary drinks (plus the health benefits) The only plastic bottles I may use are disposable water bottles and even those I reuse many times

I try to reduce my plastic consumption in simple ways. Use powdered detergent, bar soap shampoo, bars of soap, non disposable razors, bring my reusable bags to the store, and have a refillable water bottle with me. They are small steps. But, I hope they make a little difference somehow.

Please make the subtitles larger. Why are they so small? I am in my fifties and I don't see that well anymore and when you are my age neither will you, your subtitles are just a blur. Please learn from movies that use larger subtitles because they know many older people have trouble seeing and there is no harm in using larger subtitles. Such a rookie mistake!

Biodigradable is not the same as compostable. Unless it is treated in special facilities. It just breaks down quicker but it still leaves the small bits we can't see which is even harder to clean up, yet still toxic and poluting. 🤔 PS sorry about the info dump just trying to be informative. 💕

I like how there's no mention of the fishing industry and all the gear that pollutes the ocean. Over 40% of the great pacific patch is from the fishing industry. Save the oceans by stopping the consumption of it's inhabitants. It's not hard, especially in 2022. Scientists have backed this up, going vegan is the single best thing you can do for the environment (and the non-human animals). Be vegan! ✌🏾✌🏾

Plastic use in poor countries means that anything you do in the west is irrelevant. Usage in SE Asia is off the charts. I ordered sausages from a place in Bangkok. Came in a plastic bag. Thick plastic container. Plastic separator between sausages and bread. Sauce in plastic container. Plastic utensils wrapped in plastic. And that's just one meal. The worst part is that they have small portions in poorer places so it's a really inefficient use of plastic as well.

Fully agree with your message. We must not forget though, it were the "west" countries that came up with all this consumerism and waste cycle. "Poor countries" just follow the trends. 10-20 yrs ago, if you ordered sausages in any "developed capital", you'd be served with the same amount of plastic. 😁 Being from the "west", I believe that if we have the resources for the RD of better ideas and technologies, it is our obligation of doing so and sharing them with the world, before we make this planet fubar. :)

There is no nice touch that you try to add at the end of your short documentary you made. Plastic has been made by humans and it will stay with us for a VERY LONG TIME. Whatever we do now will not make up for all the damage we have made already for the last 70 years. No, we can not fix this problem when I see my colleague drinking only (plastic) bottled water. Any yet the idea of plastic in microparticules scares him. But this is just my opinion.

Be part of the solution... Smh! Thanks for the tips. Haven't watched the full vid but this is Mexico's problem. It's up to the their government to fix this issue and not the traveller's. We follow the rules set in place by the country/city. Philippines did some cleaning of their own and banned vacationers at their famous beaches for months and was actually clean when I went after their "rehabilitation". Mexico should follow suit.
