When you have only one option, you don't have a strategy. It is a very childish way to address the problem, without exploring other options. The Ocean Cleanup has many challenges, some of which may not be surmountable. We have already seen this in the prototype.

You're on the right track and some states have a deposit charge on the beverage bottles. I think the deposit charge is to low it should be 25% of the cost of the item in every state .l grew up with nickel and dime deposit on glass bottles . I know it doesnt sound like much , but when you consider the wages that were paid in the 50s thru the mid 70s . You didnt trash the bottles . I can remember when l would go bike riding and pick up bottles , you would make a buck or two in a day. All the stores paid you for the bottles .

YES, the manufacturer of future junk should have to include the disposal cost of their product in their sale price . . . which would motivate "the source" to consider the TOTAL cost of their product design, instead of off loading the disposal cost on the consumer who then dumps the expense onto the environment. The social problem will not be addressed overnight. Especially because it is universally unpopular. The Ocean Cleanup however has shown the ability to take money from concerned wealthy people’s wallets including mine. Because it has a big visual and emotional impact that the educational tactics lack. Of course you can see it as Sysyphus’ punishment if you don’t consider all the dimensions of the issue. It’s not too early to start figuring out a way of cleaning the oceans. Even if we keep polluting them. Follow them to understand the reach of their action on the social side.

@@ArnaudMEURET the social problem was fabricated by industry who knew full well that it would cause a massive increase in waste. They saw higher profits with plastic over glass even though glass had proven to be a very effective solution. I remember the transition and most people were not happy with the change, but manufacturers kept pushing. The same thing happened with paper bags being replaced by plastic. I agree with the op, the solution is to stop the problem at the source. I would take it one step further, not only should the producer of the products be held accountable, but regulations should be put in place to prohibit manufacture of non-biodegradable (short term) non-reusabble products whose role is strictly packaging. No more plastic bottles, plastic bags, blister packs, or plastic/foam box padding. Until the source is stopped, the cleanup will be ineffective.

In the UK companies that use water or just have very large plants are required to have their own effluent plants that process and treat any water before it is discharged back into rivers, the water is monitored. It should be international law to have these plants for companies of a certain size.

Instead 5hese water companies mainly in the south of the UK pay bumper dividends to their shareholders. The govt urgently needs to renationalise all the utility companies, privatisation has not worked, instead of competing with one another, they get together to set whatever price they think they can get away with fleecing customers, ain't capitalism great!

I think it is a good start. More interceptors in polluted rivers to prevent more garbage getting to the ocean and the system 002 on combination theoretically will have a significant impact on pollution. They may not get it all but it will help. Micro plastics should be the next priority. Great job Ocean Clean up!

I love what youre doing! The video shows actual steps being taken and the results being achieved. Much easier to get behind this very important green program than some vague pie in the sky attack on energy. Our first priority in saving our planet should be education and continued monitoring and cleaning of the waterways and shore lines. Just because a country is poor or crowded, it should not endorse litter. Also I find the cost of the Interceptor to be extremely reasonable! Well done.

🤔 Ocean Conservation Namibia - video after video showing Cape fur seals entangled in fishing lines and nets, as well as other marine debris. The work done by Naude, Antoine, Denzil and Wally is truly compassionate and humane towards these seals with horrendous injuries. In France they have create a microorganism that eat PET and produce the cleanest purity of PET for new products. The companie is called Carbios. The microorganism eats 1 ton per 10hours. 2022 they plan a new location with 40 tonnes per year. Would be great if they can expand worldwide.

4 millions tons of plastics are used in France each year. The country recycle only 25%, the rest is buried or burned. The microorganism eating PET is a good thing but that won’t resolve the problem.

Although it is a great idea to clean up the plastic mess in oceans and rivers, how about an effective system of return-for-recycle imposes on plastic manufacturers with economic reward and punishment scheme? Ocean Cleanup may be unemployed within 10 years, if such a system (like in Germany) is mandatory.

I don't know if The Ocean Cleanup has the answer on it's own, but at least they're doing something about the problem. If more organizations would jump on board and collaborate with TOC, or in fact come up with their own ideas, together we would stand a much better chance of cleaning up the Garbage Patches. I hear naysayers out there who say that the problem is just too big and that it can't be solved, but I condemn those who say this without offering an alternative solution of their own. We're at a critical point with this problem, so either offer up solutions or keep your mouth shut and let us work to save the planet!

Plastic collected by the machines can be recycled into diesel fuel, which is the best way to get rid of the waste. One kg of plastic makes one litre fuel. In Australia, the UK and Denmark such plants are working. The raw material is almost for free.

One major problem is the mosconceptiin that countries discard their garbage do it without thought or care. While I do believe this, please also consider that less-developed counries (like Nigeria) have to no choice uut to dump their trash in rivers. Because of the economy, the people don't have a place to put their trash in. They don't have a garbage collector that takes their trash away. What we have to do is help these countries with their economy so they too can become part of the solution. Lol this is too long but whatever have a nice day

The ocean clean up project makes me feel much more positive than the climate change issue because I can see actual progress. If there was a similar way to tackle climate change where the progress is more visible I think more people would donate and support it.

There are projects like that! Like team seas there was of course also team trees, which planted 20 million trees (and is still planting more trees btw). If you want something simple that you don't need to donate money to, there is ecosia. The worlds first carbon negative search engine. The money that they earn through ad revenue goes to planting diverse forests. If you want a project similar to the ocean cleanup, I know there's an organization which makes machines that take co2 out of the air, the organization collects the carbon and uses it to make diamond rings with it which you can buy to support the project. if I was a multi billionaire I would buy at least one of them for each of these rivers and I would give money and support local authorities by improving their waste management, taking the waste pour of the river may help, but it still does not solve the problem. Preventing is the solution the plastic itself must not enter the oceans. Also, the big companies who bring plastic into circulation should pay a certain amount for each plastic device that they bring into circulation. which then can be used for improving the processes. But the world is full of egoistic people who only care about their money, Once moral is gone everything will brake

@@notmyopinion4981 I know and its great that THEY do that, but that's still far too late. The plastic of course also should not be disposed into the rivers and landscape. I think we have to learn that we all share one planet. So the rich countries should rather assist poorer countries to dispose their garbage properly, than sending even more garbage there to have the poor countries solve the plastic problem of the rich ones. Of course its great that there are at least some organisations that try to get some of the plastic out of the rivers and oceans again. There is just always the risk that this makes us ignore those problems, thinkiing someone else will fix it for us.

*I have no doubt that a lot of this collected plastic could be turned into building material like bricks for pavement and roads, fuel, mechanical parts, etc. I think Canada, Austria, India and Africa have experimented with this... Just better coordinate collection and recycling efforts. Convert retired super tankers and other old ships into collection, processing and transport vessels...*
