Agreed. It's getting hard to find real, unbiased reviews on tech amidst all the hype and overly optimistic views. I enjoy the nitpicky reviews at they often get at the actual user experience, flaws and all, rather than a long form ad conforming to what a manufacturer allows you to know. All products have flaws and that's to be expected, but we can't make informed decisions without all the info. Real world useability can make or break a product for consumers and you can't find that in the marketing of said product. Side note: I relied heavily on reviews as well as specs when picking out a new laptop for my mum. 5 years on and she still says its the best laptop she's ever owned. Yo, a lot of the Wacom stuff do use batteries, like AES, so it really might be a Wacom pen/digitiser. EMR's the older passive stuff, and isn't seen too often anymore (unfortunately, since it's better in some ways)
@gerardopadilla26662 жыл бұрын
It is better in *most ways, not some. AES was a cash grab done solely because their license for their old EMR had expired and they needed to sell something, but they still kept developing on EMR and every single one of their premium tablets are EMR for a reason. AES is a "Do what I say not what I do" marketing moment. Tho mind you it isn't becoming rare, Samsung has always used it, and most pen displays are EMR, be it Wacom, Huion, XP-Pen, etc. It's just rare in laptop devices who just go with whatever they are sold the cheapest. Always sad to see companies choosing either MPP/N-Trigg or AES when the people who care about it all prefer EMR, but then I guess we are just not appealing enough compared to those which are fine with active pens. But hey, at least some companies get the memo sometimes, like the Acer Ezel 7 getting EMR instead of its cheaper 3 counterpart which uses AES, kinda wish both were EMR tho.

@gerardopadilla26662 жыл бұрын
@@Natsukashii1111 The license for current Wacom perhaps, old one is already public IIRC and EMR is actually cheaper to build. The only issue is having to use and set an extra digitizer for touch input and in the case of the old EMR it had some cursor drift around the edges the company might need to debug if going that route. There's also the fact most EMR pens end up with a single button instead of two (Think that was also Wacom's fault, tho I honestly forgot if that was the case or just coincidence) which can be a turn off for some, thus not in everything, but they are fixable and for the most part irrelevant to the user indeed if that's what you mean.
@torpedospurs2 жыл бұрын
@@gerardopadilla2666 Samsung has a good relationship with Wacom (it does have a 5% stake) so perhaps no other laptop manufacturer can get Wacom EMR nowadays. I certainly haven't seen one in years. AES is not the best but at least the battery can last for a year.
@gerardopadilla26662 жыл бұрын
@@torpedospurs I'd agree, but I gave you an example, the Acer Ezel 7 uses EMR, Fujitsu also uses EMR they are just more difficult to find in local stores and can be a pain for some having to ship them, not to mention spec wise the Galaxy Book right now might be the better option either way. Microsoft used to use EMR before they bought N-Trigg, and you have all the other pen display companies using EMR on their own R&D which I doubt are Wacom license anymore. So I quite doubt they can't, they're most likely just swayed by marketing speeches to buy active pen tech without actual knowledge of benefits, same reason why companies pay for Denuvo when everyone hates it and major companies have prove they can succeed just the same without it. That or they simply wanted to cheap out or just copy the Surface and iPad which use active pen (without realising they do that only because they own it).

WQXGA We've spent so long creating SKUs for tech items we've looped back around to the ridiculous alphabet soups that were being used to describe phone screen resolutions in the 2010s

Very fair review and as always Anthony says it how it really is, reminds me a lot of how Tech Jesus Steve tells manufacturers a few home truths! Manufacturers need to hear this sort of stuff, coz they won't listen to the lonely consumer.

The review for stylus was lacking imo. This laptop does not look worth for the price if not for the stylus. Would be nice to see usage at least in ms paint- to know how fast it responds to pen tip touching the screen, how much force it needs, if it works well at the edges and so on.

for 2k dollars having that much lag is stupid, i wouldnt recommend a 60hz panel for drawing/designing
@automotivebuff32022 жыл бұрын
I have this and the first thing I did was try the stylus in Photoshop. It's very responsive, the lines are straight with no checkmarking at the end of the stroke. I didn't notice any lag when drawing (you get three nibs total; writing nib is preinstalled, with a spare in the packaging as well a drawing nib) My main gripe with it is the cooling solution. It's gowdawful, the low profile feet it has (to make sure the screen lays flat when in tablet mode) effectively chokes the machine out. It can get super hot. For studying, taking notes, and LIGHT drawing, it's perfect. I say light drawing because of the cooling solution. LG cannot claim any compliments for the stylus because it's a WACOM pen, not a proprietary pen. It's meant to do what it does flawlessly. It has a lot of flex, the screen flexes hard as well especially when you're just walking around with it in your hand with the lid open (like going from a table to the couch). I love it but I am so disappointed. I don't have buyer's remorse but there was so much more they could have done with it.

I completely agree with the many other commenters, this type of review for any device is absolutely needed, great review Anthony! The gram in this video seems directionless, filled with short comings when compared to a Surface Pro, Lenovo Yoga or a Dell 2 in 1.

Having had the 15" laptop version of this gram for work, I thought it was pretty great though I didn't pay for it so am biased. But I've also bought 2 in 1s and just don't think they're worth the inevitable markup or hardware penalties.

I like having a 2 in 1 as a secondary machine. My desktop for most things but when I go places I like the portability of my 2 in 1. Plus the only game I play is Minecraft (bedrock) and my 2 in 1 can do it at 4k so I'm pretty happy.

@Anthony From what I heard Wacom doesn’t hold the patent anymore since I’ve seen and purchased tablets that use the same tech off amazon. (huion Kamvas lineup for example) So as far as I see there’s no reason not to

honestly whoever wrote the example "emails" for the Grammarly spot in this video needs a payrise, that's a textbook example of how to get viewers engaged with an adspot and not just skip over it - I actually put my phone down to better focus on reading the example copy. 11/10.

Can you include a part where Anthony checks if you can dual boot the laptop. I have an hp laptop with Intel Rapid Boot technology or something like that which I cannot turn off which is also preventing me from dual booting with Linux and HP support is more like an non existent entity.

I have been using a gram for the last 2 years. I love it for my specific use case. It's perfect for Linux. I have Fedora installed from Day 1. Fingerprint sensor doesn't work but as there is no dedicated GPU, so power management is well optimized and gives close to Windows battery life.

I'm not opposed to soldered stuff. It makes things smaller, more integrated, and more energy efficient. It's also usually cheaper to make. For a laptop focused on efficiency, it's a good thing. Just be sure to get what you will need for your use case.

@@LiveType This thing should cost 800 max. That's how much i paid for a 2 in 1 lenovo for my dad last year that does everything this thing here can and had no bloatware. 1165g7 might be a little better than the 1035g1 but the people to whom performance matters would not buy a 4c laptop with no dGPU either way.
