@@raj1n501 Exposed by another PC hardware channel, it was found that certain Gigabyte brand PSU's were faulty and could catch on fire. The company handled it poorly, downplaying the severity. This tarnished the company's reputation amongst PC enthusiasts. Given this, it was a bit sus that the Gigabyte name was not mentioned at all for most of this video despite most/all of the components coming from that company. A little stink of marketing/PR shenanigans at play in this sponsored piece, we smell through it though. 😊

How emphatically did Aorus ask you not to plug and replug either end of that new 12VHPWR connector? It's stated they're only rated for THIRTY connection cycles and GN/others have shown that issues can appear well before then.

@treborrrrr
@treborrrrr Жыл бұрын
I'm not saying that's not horrendously bad durability. But in practice, for 99.9% of consumers, will it ever be an actual issue? I can't speak for anyone else but for the last 4-5- systems I've built, I've removed the power connector from a graphics card a total of maybe two times.
@2dozen22s
@2dozen22s Жыл бұрын
@@treborrrrr I've been through 3-4 GPUs on one system, 2 cases, 2 motherboards, and have replugged them numerous times for debugging/swapping or taking a photo for selling before putting it back in (all before finally upgrading my PSU). It won't affect the majority of consumers, and it won't immediately result in fire hazards, but come 4-5 years it may begin to affect a large section of the enthusiast community. This also can affect the used market if the gpu end of the connector can get damaged. My r9 fury is used, and still in a good enough condition to be sold again.
@tigartar
@tigartar Жыл бұрын
You know that most of these connectors are rated for similar connection cycles right? It isn't some kind of big new thing its been a thing for a while now the pins have never been sturdy and it is something that just needs to be replaced especially if you are someone who just upgrades part by part over a long cycle of time. For example sata cables are rated for 50 connection cycles(Esata for 5000) and problems due to disconnect and reconnect can and will happen after 10-20 times, this is something that has been around for a long time as these cables weren't designed to be unplugged often and more so designed that the average person might unplug them 4-5 times if even that before swapping to a different case or getting replacement cables or anything like that. In a bunch of older pcs(try thinking the big pata cables) you had cables that would stop working if you bend them to far on accident or disconnected them a few times all these cables are designed to be plugged in and left there and not be messed with more then a few times. Yes we need more durable cables but that will come at a cost of either complexity and cost or just cost itself and honestly how many times are you going to unplug and plug in your graphics card in a life time if you buy it and use it for a while?
@sanyammalhan

Gigabyte lost the credibility when they knowingly sold non-functional power supplies and then claimed that the Power supplies were fine. These power supplies shorted the components in the middle of GPU shortage and these power supplies were bundled with the GPU. So after screwing you multiple times how can a company just behave like nothing happened.
@discipleofdagon8195
@discipleofdagon8195 Жыл бұрын
That's the tech market for you, they'll just turn around and act like nothing happened. I think at this point Gigabyte has paradoxically distanced itself from... itself. What I mean is that Aorus, from my experience (got no clue if they suffer from the same PSU defects) has been a good brand for Mobos and especially GPUs (my first build has an Aorus elite 3060ti that runs like a dream) and it seems to be the more quality wing of gigabyte that they're pushing the envelope with. From most people I heard from, if they had a choice between a Gigabyte eagle and an Aorus GPU, they'd pick the latter. I'd still never buy a PSU from them, I'll stick with Corsair for that.
@Matt-wc2mf
@Matt-wc2mf Жыл бұрын
GPUs are getting to be the size of motherboards these days, but we're still relying on the little PCIe connector to support them. How long until it's standard to use a ribbon cable, and both the MoBo and GPU have their own dedicated standoffs to mount them in the case?
@andrewt9204
@andrewt9204 Жыл бұрын
It's why I still have my Cooler Master HAF XB case, the motherboard mounts horizontally so I don't have to use GPU support brackets and such. Even graphics cards with full metal backplates sag a little on vertical mounted boards, which isn't good long term.
@Edino_Chattino
@Edino_Chattino Жыл бұрын
At this point the GPU should be mounted vertically in the chassis, right besides the Mobo. Would make for a longer case, but thinner one. We could even go back to the old days when we used horizontal cases in our desks with the monitor above it.

@@justinjohnson476 I've never bent a mobo pin either on dozens of my LGA builds. I have bent pins a couple times on AMD CPU's. It's so easy to do with just the slightest mishandling. They were very minor bends that I was able to correct, but still annoying. I'm not the only one, some of my friends asked for help when they bent their AMD pins. One I was able to fix, the other one they accidentally dropped taking out of the package and it fully flattened a few of them, and they just immediately broke off of course when trying to bend them back. In most cases, the CPU is more expensive and longer lasting than the MOBO, so this is a good change, and I think 99% agree.

I'll def trust Gigabyte boards. I had a Z87-OC FORCE back in the day. I ran that thing hard with a 4790k @ 4.5GHZ and 4 GPUs (970's, 980's, 1080's and 1080ti's) mining ETH 24/7 for 2 years back in 2016-2018 and it just worked. Only thing that killed it was when Windows updated oneday and somehow prevented the PLX8747 multiplexor from working. But hot damn they mean it with that whole military grade shtick on their high end boards.

The Gigabyte UD1000GM-P5 is not an ATX3.0 power supply and in tests it failed the high transient tests that Jake mentions the PSU is designed for. The UDGM power supplies are actually based on the same PGM power supplies that blew up, they fixed the issue and rebranded the power supply to avoid the bad publicity, quickly stuck the new PCIe gen 5 12VHPWR cable on it without redesigning the power supply to meet ATX3.0 standards. It's funny that Jake mentions it's important to buy an ATX 3.0 power supply and one that can handle high transient spikes when the power supply he is promoting is neither. Gigabyte is careful not to refer to this as an ATX 3.0 power supply in any of its documentation, so I'm curious if that was a talking point gigabyte provided or just a mistake made by Short Circuit?

You can see Jake is reading off the provided gigabyte reviewers guide, he is moving his eyes every sentence down to the his 'laptop prompter'

Really good review. You covered not only the specs but the settings that may not be clear by just looking at it.
