The MX5 is usually the answer, no matter the question - Want something reliable? MX5. Want something fun? MX5. Want a good modding platform/project car? MX5. Need space for the kids? Tell them to get the bus and get an MX5.

Mazda tech here, the number one factor on why all Mazda's are extremely comfortable is the fact that the position of the dead pedal and the gas pedal are specifically designed to be shoulder width apart maintaining your body's natural neutral position, combined with the setting of infotainment controls you never have to reach over or torque your body out of your neutral position to control the radio/screen. If you own a Mazda keep this in mind next time you hop in your car and remember this seemly obscure comment on a shortcircuit video.

That was something my salesman had pointed out that didn't really set in till after a few years of ownership and driving other vehicles more regularly. The control knob cluster is in such a natural position if your arm is resting on the center console, it makes it so easy to navigate menus change settings etc while driving. Only thing that sucks is if you have a large bottle or cup in the cup holder having to crane your hand over top of it/them to access the knob can be a bit of pain lol.

I daily it - married childless couple. We do not regret it a single bit. We were between a Mazda 3 and a Toyota Corolla... we test drove the MX-5 for the heck of it, and we went for the Miata. Not a single regret ever. It is lovely to spend time out going somewhere for a picknick or a road trip. It forces you to get creative and get just what you need, groceries are no problem. 100% makes you really get more focused, more connected with the activities you want to enjoy, more connected to the road... it is such an amazing car. I had to strategically use the whole trunk volume and passenger seat/well to huck all my work stuff into, but I had an absolute blast. I was all over the state that week, but my favorite was when I headed to a town over an hour away from the freeway, 55mph on gentle rolling hills with a bright sunny day the whole way there and back. I have a Soul Red ND. It looks awesome. It also scratches, chips, and contaminates incredibly easy and loses luster very quickly. Every time it needs a wash, you need to hand wash it twice to get it looking shiny again, for it to be dull except when wet or in direct sunlight a week later. And God, don't look at the front end too hard, because you'll see the fight it lost to the road all over the place, and there's nothing you can do about it if you didn't get protection over the paint. I have no regrets, but it's definitely not easy to keep nice or in good condition.

I commuted daily in a ND1, then ND2. Great gas milage and a grin on your face when you get to work. To daily it, you do still need access to another car in the family for the occasional time you really need more space. However, the trunk can fit a full shopping cart run. There's a lot of nerdy engineering for weight savings in this car. They called it the gram strategy. The mirror has a gram shaved off. The window glass has holes drilled in it on areas you can't see (like in the door) to save weight without compromising capability. The seat rails are also slanted upwards towards the front to reduce the need for height adjustment in the seats.

I went much older than that for my first car with a 1966, but I feel you. There's so much room in my engine bay. The car was built to accommodate a 400 cubic inch big block V8 but mine has a 330 cubic inch small block V8. There's a foot on all sides of the engine except from top and bottom, everything is easy to get to. It's not as "refined" looking as a modern engine bay with all the plastic shrouds and noise dampeners, but everything is accessible. It has a two speed automatic transmission, not as simple as a manual but still reliable (GM 2 speeds had a reputation for being immortal) and still maintains a bit of fun factor because car designers back then were wizards when it came to gearing. It handles well for a car its age, has plenty of power, and now that I've mostly restored it, is pretty reliable. I'd love to put a limited slip differential in it, though. That would complete its conversion from obsolete grocery getter to weekend fun car and occasional daily driver. Have to do my research on that, though, I want to keep the factory gear ratios if possible since I plan on keeping the factory engine and transmission.

Giving it 50 PS less simply makes overtaking dangerous. I don't know where you live, but where I live there are a lot of twisty mountain roads with not a lot of straights to overtake, so when the opportunity to do it does present itself I have to utilize it to the full extent to do it quickly and safely. Using the dial for AA isn't dangerous at all, it's actually safer. Mazda retooled AA (and I assume CP) to work with the dial and it's pretty intuitive how to navigate around with it. Once you get used ot it it's actually much easier to change thing without taking your eyes off the road and trying to hover your hand in the air to poke the right small button. I have a Mazda 3 with the same setup and now when I drive other cars with touchscreens I feel super unsafe trying to change stations or mess with maps.

NC gets a lot of hate but was the first with the 2.0L engine, sharper handling with upgraded suspension, and a stiffer chassis, all while keeping that lightweight, tossable Miata feel. Plus, it’s the first to offer the power retractable hardtop, so you get the best of both worlds-open-top fun and hardtop practicality. It’s also got great tuning potential, with tons of aftermarket support. It's not the best choice for the track because of the added weight but has been my favorite to drive.

So cool to see Alex in an MX-5. My first car was an NA, my second car was also an NA from 1989 (one of the first built), and now I drive an NC because I wanted a bit more comfort. I've driven it on the track (Zandvoort), drifted with it, driven through snow, took it on the Nürburgring, and it's my daily driver to work. Many people see the MX-5 as a toy, but those who know understand that an MX-5 is actually a race car for the street. You learn how to steer, how weight shifts, and 50/50 weight distribution is rare, especially with low weight, a front-engine, and rear-wheel drive. With semi-slicks, upgraded suspension, and brakes, you’re faster than M5s. Of course, it’s not about power or 0-100 times, but a product so well thought out for those looking for a real car doesn’t need to be searched for any further. You can channel your inner Keiichi Tsuchiya or the new Max Verstappen, and the best part is it won’t let you down because they’re just as reliable as a Honda. One issue, once you have one getting a other or second car becomes very hard, because you always compare it to the mx5... Pretty sure it's going to be a Mazda3.

As a person who has driven a Mazda for years now and also worked at a Mazda dealership, the dial can be dangerous at first but once you get used to it it’s amazing. I love being able to control CarPlay while with one hand and actually look at the road instead of a screen. Plus if you get used to it in one Mazda I don’t believe it’s different for any other models. 5:52

The Japanese automakers just have some of the best lane assist. All the American cars I've been in, I've turned the lane assist off because their systems are constantly fighting with the driver about being in the center of the lane. Every Japanese car I've driven in only cares about you actually being in the lane and doesn't care where you are.

As a long-time ND1 RF owner, I have a couple of insights. The hard top really does make the car feel less floppy, so I highly recommend it if you can afford it. Plus, you know, just look at it. I also recommend the Bilsteins (or an aftermarket) over the standard suspension. The body roll is not egregious and you can get used to it, but it was a lot more than I was expecting. There is no cabin air filter but there is an aftermarket one you can install. Kind of a pain to install and replace, but it does make a difference. GET A SET OF WINTER TIRES IF YOU ARE GOING TO DRIVE IN TEMPERATURES LESS THAN 40°F (5°C). I daily drive mine and have no problem whatsoever, but I'm only 5'9” and still have good knees, back, etc.

The ND3 is a joyous car out of the box but it has to be the easiest and least expensive car made to modify with amazing results. It is so easy to work on that you get the feeling the designers knew you were going to play with it. For about $6k you can create an absolute canyon carving beast that very few, if any, cars under @100k can hang with and still use as a daily driver.
