Im 56 now, I started playing at 16. Last summer, I got so frustrated with two way misses and feeling like my club was flailing around behind me, I decided on the 14th hole at my home club to chip it into the house. I started by hitting a shot from 156 yards and I chose an 8 iron. My plan was to chip it 50 to 75 yards and run it up somewhere short of the green. I ended up sticking it 10 feet from the pin on the green. My normal 8 iron is somewhere around 145 yards on my best day.......My driver and anything longer than 7 iron felt awful and went about how it felt. I was only getting my left arm to parallel or less. It felt like my normal 50 yard pitches but over the next several rounds I figured the timing out on my driver and for some reason, I got longer. My normal golfing partners were amazed at the consistency. I did what I always do and decided to see how far I could hit it with this tiny swing and ended up getting it longer and lost a bunch of consistency but, this was just my head playing with me and I knew what was happening so I feel like I can reign that back in. I can honestly say, that a significant shortening of my swing made my swing sequence way better. I was a fast hip turn, stuck, steep, toe deep divot, player that never got that figured out. Now, Im shallower, almost no divot, balanced, and the ball feels like its flattening on the face of my driver instead of wiping off of it. This has reinvigorated my interest in the game and Im looking forward to next summer!! Sometimes the simplest things.....

I am working on this right now! The feel for me is that (as a right hander) I'm stretching my left hand/end of the club out away from the body which results in a good shoulder turn, also shortens my past parallel swing and the result for me is that I feel I can move through the ball much better and end up in the fairway more often.

Its funny that this video just came out. I was having problems with a slice with my driver and i tried a lot of dirfferent things on the range. when i shortened my backswing i was bombing it straight almost every drive. The next day I played a round and it is the best i have ever drived and i shot a 81, the best ive ever shot on a course with 135 slope. Im 15 and i love watching your videos keep it up

I took one lesson from a local instructor. Shorter back swing was a big lesson learned. I hit the irons MUCH better. He also got me to SLOW DOWN, on the back swing. I hit farther, straighter, and now have much more reliable distance between clubs. I can pick the proper club and drop the ball in a much better spot.

Saw the left arm parallel thing on a previous video and gave it a whirl. Works a treat, but I really need to discipline myself to stick with it. I find it hard to do it with Driver, but I have faith in Monte. I WILL DO THIS FOR WEEKS AND MONTHS. (Brendon - we are very similar golfers!)

Nicely said Monte. I hit more accurately and longer when I have a shorter backswing. It is true what you say -- I believe I take it back to parallel as that is how it feels; however, video shows I always go beyond. I only think about rotating my right shoulder back - no thought of moving the arms back or up. The force of the turn propels the arms up naturally. A shorter swing allows better connection to the body and increases the chances of an in to out swing.

ive been trying this at the range for the last week and man it does freaking work like a beauty. im hitting my i7 165-170 yrd compared to 140 with a bad full swing. oh it also feels like im hitting a cloud, so much better contact than with my prior swing. i was looking at tiger and rory hitting 7 iron and they are nowhere near parallel to the ground they can totally be parallel but its unnecessary with short irons. that some big misconception that i learned 2 years ago and now its affecting me. keep up the good work. thanks for your videos.

look forward to the left arm parallel drill. I played poor golf yesterday until the third shot into 18. I noticed the 4 handicap golfer back swing short and compact just then realised I was over swinging and everything was out of sequence. I felt I shortened my back swing and result my best impact swing all day. Typical last hole last swing.

It takes time and patience. Take a 9/8 iron and practice with it for couple of weeks/months. Record yourself and watch your swing during your training session to see the progress. Hood luck

Thanks for the video... keep it up. I do lessons with Monte and I have a short swing already. The interesting thing is when I do the parallel drill my backswing doesn't get shorter, but it does look much better and I hit it better. My only guess on that is because this "drill" forces better wristcock.

I really want to strike my irons more solidly. I have been playing with this shorter backswing with iron shots just for that reason. You don't hit the ball on the way back only on the way through. It really makes you think about the importance of the back vs down swing. My thinking is to get club in good hitting position on backswing and focus on the down swing and making good contact.

Great stuff with Monte as always. Setting the wrists earlier makes it easier to swing shorter. Brendon - have Monte show you the shot where you barely take the club back (think backswing distance of a short pitch) then swing as hard as you can from there. It will expose every problem in your swing. It did to me. :-)

Parallel thought as cause me to get a proper and earlier wrist set. You cant do the parallel swing and float load the wrists and still make any contact with the ball. I somehow started to floatload as I tried to get more turn and didnt realize it. That caused an early extension with hips towards the ball which was the problem I went to Monte with in the first place a few years ago. Now if I can get past thinking, "if I do that, but swing alittle harder, faster, longer, imagine how far I could hit it?!" Its my circle of craziness...

There’s another way to do this. If you were to pound a nail into a board with a hammer, you would take the hammer back only so far as you would still feel that you could hit the nail powerfully. Any farther than that, you would be worried about even being able to hit the nail at all. The same is true in golf. You can take the club back only so far to still feel a solid connection between the clubhead and the ball. Any farther back than that, the connection is lost and you just gotta hope it works out.

Shortening my backswing to a 3/4 length is the single best thing I have ever done. The quality of strike is SO much better and everything is off the centre of the club. You haven't got time to come over the top and you start hitting draws. My only problem is that I have been fading for 30 years and I can't quite believe the ball will go straight where I aim it, so I often still miss left!
@markhuru

Kerry Flitter I guaranty like myself, your down swing path is above your back swing path, over the top it’s called, think higher hands on back swing and dropping them down on forward swing, creates a better inside out path. This is the one key move the professionals lack to get across to their students, it took me 40 yrs to learn this move, now my swing is smooth and natural, instead of coming across the ball for a slice, which I struggled with all my life. I could fix 90% of all slicers with just this simple approach to the golf swing, your right as well about the shortened back swing.

If you have long swing but your body doesn't tilt or collasp just keep doing it's fine. The real problem is transition when you make a downswing you must have a strong body and sense to make that transition timing with your long backswing. If you make a shorter swing (In fact is it about the same height but you will feel lot shorter) your brain will tell you how to transfer weight and you will have better contact, make sure you have turn your body too not just your arm. :P When I got John Daly backswing I can hit 7 iron 187 yards after I shorten up my swing it went about 175 yards but the consistency is dramatically improved hehe.

I like how Monte explains that there are different types versus generalizing everyone into a single type. Some people just overswing because they're extremely flexible and don't feel coiled until the shoulders are well past 90. A 90 turn for me would feel like a half swing. I think it's best to categorize folks as over swingers and over rotators. Over swinger in my mind lacks the flexibility but tries to do all kinds of manipulations to get the club back further. Over rotator just has shoulders that keep turning and reach a very late stopping point. I over rotate but I feel like restricting my hip turn to probably 30 degrees or so of turn helps me shorten it. Simply a flexibility thing. I could turn my shoulders to 120 and never lose spine angle or breakdown the lead arm. Hard to get coiled for sure without stopping my hips.

@sevesellors2831
@sevesellors2831 5 жыл бұрын
BE BETTER GOLF Hard discipline and making sure I felt like I was only using a half swing, that is a firm left arm and my hands no further than shoulder height. Many times even with the driver I felt like I was utilising a pitching swing. The other point was to take two short practice swings then step in and hit the ball and not get stuck with mental thoughts. Not easy but it works and I hit the ball further and with more accuracy.

I have always been a long swinger, and even worse, I tend to lift my arms to complete my swing. I've played off 2-3 hcp for years doing this but I am inconsistent. I play in a lot of tournaments and have found that 95% of good golfers do not get to parallel with an iron. Probably 90% these days don't get to parallel with a driver any more. The reason this is important is that when you go beyond the 3/4 position, you start to introduce more risk of getting out of sync. (Arm run-off, lifting the arms, over hinging the wrists, getting steep). For me at least, this is the one thing that is keeping me from being Scratch. I definitely hit the ball further from a shorter swing. The main issue is getting used to a new timing feel. This is a good lesson but you need to be prepared to tough it out for at least 3 mths, through thick and thin. There will be days when you hit the ball badly but I guarantee this will work, if your problem is a long, sloppy backswing.

@randalljbeck 6 жыл бұрын
BE BETTER GOLF i think if you look at all golfers, for contact sake, we will just say pros or scratch players. You see all types of swing lengths. From Mickelson/Daly to Rahm. Timing is subjective, you can take any top of the backswing position and still get to a good impact position. Why do you think Monte says it takes so long to change? It’s not only the most difficult pursuit, it very well might not even be worth it, as good golf can be played from any position. If you’re a golfer, looking to improve your game, look at sequencing or transition first. Issue with the golf swing today is everyone wants to look good while doing it. To answer the question, no I don’t think length of the swing effects timing.

@interestedbystander196
@interestedbystander196 6 жыл бұрын
@@randalljbeck When you say long swing might not affect timing, I suspect you mean rhythm or tempo. A long swing WILL change timing - it will actually take longer to complete a long swing than short one at the same swing speed. What a long swing will affect is balance and consistency of strike. A shorter swing has "fewer moving parts", so is much more likely to return clubhead to ball consistently than a long swing, I think.
