The legendary Mike Austin Swing was complete in and of itself. Parts of it CANNOT be adapted to any conventional swing bcz it builds the swing from - the literally the ground up. One of the "pieces" people are most interested in is the Mike Austin "release", and there have been several videos on this ... many good. It CANNOT simply be added to the conventional PGA-approved swing, whatever that is today. Here is the Mike Austin release in its simplest form: slap something/backhand something with your left hand. Mike showed it to me several times. The whole point is to unimpeded your grip so that it doesn't slow down or misalign your shot. Of course, at this point in the swing, the left side has cleared the swing path/body @45 deg angle or so, or your grip will crash into your left side using conventional swing practice. Hence, his swing is complete, and really can't be cannibalized to improve or fine-tune a conventional swing.

Fascinating how common "wisdom" keeps coming up short. I remember how adamant instructors were that you shouldn't putt with your index finger down the shaft -- until Brooks Koepka won a couple of majors doing just that. And I might be mistaken, but I think it was Harvey Penick who said something to the effect that watching the putter head go back was a recipe for disaster. What's next? A tour player who grips the club with his right palm under and his thumb on the back of the shaft? 😁

As a sport psychologist, may I suggest your experimental method can improve in these ways….Firstly, 50 makes and 49 makes are statistically insignificant in variation. Also, 50 putts at the same distance and place has practice effects. I think three distances at 12, 8 and 4 feet in rotation would eliminate that. If you designed your experiment your way, it would have been rejected by the academics as having design flaws. BTW, you making 49 out of 50 would disqualify you as an experimental subject, as you’re too good at baseline to begin with, and there is no space for variation in the experimental phase.

Relative to standard ‘how to’ type instruction this is like upside down thinking - building in ‘reactivity’s if the ball was moving: so super interesting but challenging and which requires a good deal of ‘unlearning’ if such a word exists so my take out is this 1, You set the base of the swinging motion (feet) and the apex (clunhead) separate in pace and keep these separate through the motion 2.The motion from start to finish, is unidirectional - clockwise for the right handed golfer 3. Providing the apex with momentum right from the start is the swing slider 4. This is achieved by the transfer of underfoot weight pressure with limited lateral motion, from foot to foot - exaggerated by the stepping process 5, Once energised by the footwork, the inertia of the apex must be allowed to determine the motion around the orbit without the conscious application of force at the handle end of the club and without undue movement of the body to perturb the orbital motion 6, And always keep the shaft on the lead side of the ‘away’ motion and on the body’s trail side during the forward part of the orbit Am I on roughly the correct page Brandon.. I got the impression that this guy wasn’t convinced by what Mike was saying hence the continual ‘but,but,but’ type questions. There is a great piece of golf equipment called ‘The Explanar’ , a circular metal frame which prescribes the perfect circle around you ‘on plane’. When you stand in it and make a swing it wont let you shallow the club behind you at the top. Why? Because you run your club around the frame on the backswing and it keeps you on the circle. It puts you in exactly the position Mike is describing. I have no idea why YT coaches don’t use The Explanar as a teaching aid more. It literally puts you in the right place at the top and helps you understand the relationship between your hands and club head position i.e. keep club head outside of hands.

You also forget that everything he does is for stability and consistency! He arm locks with a putter that is almost straight up and down it is one degree within the usga limits! So being so on top of it and letting your eyes follow the stroke takes the hit out of your stroke and even makes you forget about the hole… he’s basically figured out how to recreate belly putters so that there is an anchor..

What another interesting discussion. 4 to 6 ft is killing my score card so I will try anything. I remember Harrington disagreeing with a still head while putting. He differentiated between rotation of the head and moving it and absolutely thought rotating the head while putting was ok. I would have thought that keeping the fluid in the inner ear steady would be pertinent to perception and balance and it would make sense for that reason to keep the head still. I’ve also read some comments recently from the putting gurus about eye tracking and why focusing on a dot or dimple on the ball should be beneficial but clearly there may be another way. Very interesting observation BBG.

Love this kinda stuff to try out that's more akin to where you place your awareness. With all my clubs, I find I can get different results and feels from a slight shift of focus to different parts of the clubhead, although I would struggle to prove it is anything more than some kind of placebo effect. This was a really intersting one.

@@l0rdkeithingt0n funny you say that because I did at the same time I did this I did the Jordan Spieth method of looking at the hole as well. But I found that in order to do it effectively, it takes an incredible amount of mental focus. 90% of the time it would be a super effective method, but if you let your focus waiver, just a little bit on your preview perception of where the clubhead is, you could hit one extremely bad. It makes sense that someone with steel trap mental game like Jordan finds it useful. I was exhausted putting that way

@jeffadams54136 күн бұрын
My friends tell me I do this naturally. My fell or mindset is to move my right shoulder back under and thru. Allowing my head to follow this same path keeps my putter head square and low on the short follow thru. I have a strange set up. The ball is played off the outside of my lead or left foot. I then place 80% of my weight on that lead foot which moves my sternum and eyes over the ball. I never was taught this and never really worked on it. But my playing partners always ask me why I do it I say I’m not sure it’s just natural for me.
