These reeded-edge bust halves also had a change to a smaller diameter, which continued into the seated liberty halves. The 1836 had both a lettered-edge and a reeded-edge type.

According to the Red Book and other research these bust half series of the reeded edge are just a fraction smaller than the seated series.. about a mm smaller... Making this series the smallest half dollars in all 👍

@@johnskujins8870 yes this is a fact You can even use calipers or refer to the red book of the diameter for the reeded edge bust half of 1836-39

I find it is interesting that the distinction between the varieties is 50 CENTS versus HALF DOL. On my earlier version half dollar, an 1822 (with Tim Burton style twos), on the rim it says 50 CENTS OR HALF A DOLLAR.

My first encounter with a capped bust half dollar was when I was about 12, around 2007 or 2008, and I was visiting a local coin store that isn't there anymore. I was mostly just looking for basic supplies, like folders for pennies and nickels. But among the coins being offered was one of those old half dollars, in poor condition, just recognizable enough to catch my attention. It was mine for $10, and I've held onto it ever since.

HI Ben. What about the Flying Eagle Cent? Wasn't the 1856 proof a pattern? The standard issue FE Cent was issued in only 1857 and 1858. 🦅 *>>---->* 🦉

I have both the 1837 and 1838 reeded edge half dollars. I got them both raw for under $100. They are both mid-grades as well. Glad to have them!

How quaint is it to simply say at the bottom of the reverse "50 cents".... That's EXACTLY what it was.... and 50 cents could buy you a lot of stuff during the quaint old times of this period when this piece was minted! 1836-1837... Love it! I have three of these modified reeded edge bust halves beginning in 1836. I wish I had the 1836 though... Got two 1837s and one 1838 with the"HALF DOL." Type... But I believe the flying eagle penny was also one of the short lived coins in US history.. As well as the flowing hair design for the eighteenth century silver half and dollar type.

What a fun series! Overton didn't do reeded edge halves, only the prior types. Jules Reiver wrote a book on die varieties on reeded halves in 1988, expanding on work done by Martin Beistle in the 1920's predating Overton, and Dick Graham expanded on it in 2012. For me, this series is all about die cracks. There are some dramatic cracks on several of the dies that are really fun to search for and explore - including a few different ones on the wonderful 39-O you mentioned. Determining die varieties in this series is otherwise difficult because the design elements were hubbed, so the whole design is almost entirely identical on every die. This is different from the earlier halves that Overton's work covers because the lettering on those was entered by hand and there are differences. In this series, you need to look at the few specific elements that were added by hand, like how the lines on the shield sometimes extend into the wings or up through horizontal crossbars, or scratches or lumps in the die to identify most of them. Dates are very similar, but there can be some differences there as well.

Hi, Are you part of Jim Koening's Reeded Edge Half Dollar Group. He's put out a monthly new letter addressing the rarity of each GR in the series, how to identify each GR, discussions on early..middle..late die stages, die marriages of these coins. There are about 61 Newsletters starting from 2019 with most of them able to be found on the Newman Numismatic portal. If you are not a member, you definitely should be. You can find Jim's info at the bottom of any Newsletter.

It seems that you might have forgotten possibly the shortest US coin series, the flying eagle cent minted from 1856/1858. And excluding the 1856 which was only minted in proof, that makes this little series only 2 years in production and within that 2 years there are sub types of large and small letter varieties.

Was going to nerd out and mention that the 39-O quarter eagle also has the obverse mintmark but I see someone beat me to it. 39-o is also the first branch mint biz strike half dollar, beating the 55-s by a full 16 years.

@timber72
@timber72 3 ай бұрын
The 1839-O is the only *silver* coin with the mintmark on the obverse (and is obtainable.) Don't forget the $2.50 and $5 from 1838-1839, C, D, and O. In fact, the 1839-O half and $2.50 are the only obtainable coins from the New Orleans mint with the mintmark on the obverse. In fact, there are a mere 8 coins total with obverse mintmarks from the first two years of branch mint coinage, one of which is the unobtainable 1838-O half.
