One of the best tips i know of is never to adjust your aim while you are down for a shot. If you need to adjust, always stand back up and approach the shot all over again. You covered this in the main, but this version is gr8 for beginners and to discipline your process!

I started playing 55 years ago, I learned that it's easier to learn from watching other players an improving your knowledge of the game than just hitting balls without studying the mechanics and fundamentals of pool. Everyone needs sometime alone on the table to work on their weaknesses, improvement always follows examination and review. Great video.

I just started playing pool more with a friends group. I never knew about a ghost ball visual that now explains WHY my aim gets thrown off, especially cut shots. Your visuals help immensely as a visual learner!!! I can watch 100's of pool vids of people going thru the motions that tell you what it looks like but it doesn't tell me how to correct myself. Showing the angles helps engrain what I should look for...now putting it into practice! 🥰 TY!

This is easily one of the best videos on aiming I've seen. I don't consider myself a beginner anymore, but I've seen nearly every video on "aiming"/shotmaking on youtube. The premise and execution of this video is clear and better defined than the others. When someone asks "how do you aim?" I'll send them this first. So much good stuff in here that took me a while to find out the hard way.

After I watched this I won 4 games against people I had never been able to get close to beating before, and they were shocked. Holy crap. I’ve been playing for more than 40 years. For about a 15 year period, I was pretty good. I haven’t played regularly for the last 10 years or so. When I do go, every shot now seems so difficult. I miss so many previously easy shots. Through this video, I’m learning I’ve been aiming wrong. During the window when I was good, it was all feel and I was on autopilot. Now that the feel is gone, I have to line everything up, BUT I’VE BEEN LINING UP MY AIM WRONG. It’s not easy admitting that after 40 years, but I guess that’s half the battle.

A breathe of fresh air! I would opine that the “inner game" of billiards is _head, heart, and hands._ “Heart“ for the passion and discipline for its ongoing practise and refinement; “Hands“ for the accuracy and precision of its execution; “Head“ for the understanding of principles which makes it possible to predict outcome and discriminate real progress. HAMB (Hit A Million Balls) is a worthy and necessary practise philosophy, but (just as you say) it is neither practicable nor efficient. Vector diagrams and visualization exercises combined with rules-of-thumb and special cases are similarly suboptimal in and of themselves, but both together keep the student advancing sufficiently well and sufficiently quickly to keep his/her “heart in the game.“ For instance, it is a matter of embarrassment to tell you how many years I was invested in my advancement of skill in pool before it was pointed out to me that the rebounding cue ball travels along the tangent line -- and I was a physics major in college! It´s alike to the common saying, that now that I see this, I cannot “unsee“ it. The trouble is, many advanced players (including instructors!) cannot viscerally recall ever _not_ perceiving these simple verities, or worse, denigrate its explication and demonstration, exhorting the student to instead just _feel the ball._ Additionally, there is a weird perceptual syndrome that happens when too many balls are on the table: the essential principles are harder to see. This shouldn´t be so, but nevertheless is. I think you understand this. I cannot sign off without a gratuitous quibble: “Aiming for the black“ is _not_ where the pocket “is“. For all but straight-in shots, a successfully pocketed ball involves making it as a “banked shot“ off one side or the other of the _ostensible_ pocket; indeed, part of my aim regimen is determining whether I should “error“ on the side of hitting the object ball “too“ thick or “too“ thin, by the criterion of the above principle.

Not knowing what to do I ordered Stan Schuffets Pro One cd. So I immediately got better fast. Then I hit the plateau and needed help. Stan is very gracious to help but he is out of State. Tyler Styer was at a tournament in Sacramento. I heard we have the same coach Stan. I was amazed we spent 5 hours together. It brought me up another 25%. Yet, he was gone and I was still needing that help. I still need help. lol This video helped me seeing the 30 line. Pro one has preceptions that place you on the contact spot. Yet if you have the wrong perception your shot is off. Willie Mosconi learned very young (when shorter) and had a side-stroke because of it. As your daughter grows she will learn to adjust arm position - be patient. My best advice is - if you are not having fun, you are doing it wrong. Learning and training can be difficult and frustrating. But it can also be fun at the same time. Accept all outcomes and take on all challenges with joy in your soul - that is the key to success and a long career in pool.

I'll agree with everything said in this video!!!! Because of covid, and the shutdown of place where I can play pool, most of my muscle memory has left me. I have been shanking the cue ball in all sorts of funky directions. Right now I'm only practicing straight in shots across from middle pocket to middle pocket and have the cue ball follow the object ball in. I don't think I've done 10 in a row yet. But I am learning more about stance, foot placement on the aim line, getting my butt out of the way of my stroking hand, and drawing my stroking hand STRAIGHT back. I tend to draw my hand back around my body. It's really hard to stroke straightforward and make a shot, when I my back stroke is going back in a curve and throwing my alignment off line. I hope my comments help some one. Great video!!!!

KISS❤️ Great job on simplifying the basics of learning how to aim. I didn’t see any mention of quality of stroke but maybe that is too advanced for the purpose of this video. Smooth acceleration of the tip through the contact point on the cue ball affects both pocketing and position. When I was watching Jason’s early attempts at breaking the world 14.1 record, most of the shots he may missed were caused by de-acceleration while attempting to hold the cue ball.

I do believe you have some valid points for improving. I have done some of yours over the years of playing. What has helped me lately is looking at the object ball & pocket more than the cue-ball when shooting. I have practiced difficult shots over & over & noticed when I need them my brain remembers & I make the shot. Same when I play tennis, I practice serving the ball so much, when I tried to serve after not playing for over a month, my serve was there still. Practice & consistent work gets results. Great video.

The way i feel like I’ve improved after just watching the video is insane. Process based learning is something used everywhere. Even as simple as gym and fitness goals, school and more. I feel like a better player because next time I play I’m gonna be to apply what I’ve learned here and do those practice shots. Even if I fail miserably I’ve learned which is what a learning system should do😊

Would like to add now that I’ve had time to play and practice for first time since watching the video that I have definitely improved incredible. That feeling I had was correct. I’m someone who can soak up knowledge very quickly and apply it very quickly when trying something new. Getting better at stuff quickly is not new to me. I always use process based learning however I believe this video made me improve even faster then normal. I am showing my friends what I learned as well and although a bit slower they are learning very quickly and improving rapidbly. Theory based learning like yours with visuals and progression and the clear understanding you have over the topic is so much more helpful then ppl give credit for. I can tell just how good you are by your ability to teach ppl. Amazing job

I visualize & parallel my ghost Stick with the edge of the bumpers to figure out my angles in reference to the Ball then fine tune my angle shots it helps me make faster decisions. Meaning I don't physically use my Stick to reference the Angle. I visualize the stick parallel with the bumpers in reference to where the ball is. Then I adjust the proper angle from there. That way I know where my Q-ball will end up after my Shot. Hope this helps others.

It took me forever to learn to aim as I had an impossible time seeing the ghost ball. I wish I had learned that cue stick measurement sooner. That was an incredible way to see the aim point.

Hit the spot on the object ball that lines up with the intended pocket. And keep your eye on that spot until the ball hits. :) In other words stay down on the shot all the way.

The one thing I would add is that some of us have thousands or even hundreds of thousands of reps using an aiming system and even though that sucks, we were still training our brain the whole time. After watching your aiming system sucks video, I tried instinctual aiming, just locking my eyes on the object ball and trusting my hand eye coordination to do the rest, and I cannot believe how big of a difference it made, pretty much instantly. I play British pool so I can't cite a Fargo rating or anything but I'm a C player and the A players at my club have brought up how much better I got from it. That being said, when I get to the States and can play on an American table where the cue ball is the same size as the object balls, I plan to do your half ball hit drill to learn to recognize them. Also, if anyone reading this is still doing center ball training, I dunno if my method will still work because about a third of the time, the whole trusting my brain thing leads to hitting the ball full and throwing it in.
