I'm now 37 and have always thought this was a Mitch Ryder original, think both versions are good but this one is incredible, by far my favorite version.

I heard this tune on satellite radio and I fell in love with it. I will be searching for it in the store or online asap. Classic.

In all probability The Much Regretted Robert White, the main guitsrist for Motown's formidable house band, The Funk Brothers..

This was *always* far, far, *far*, **FAR** superior to that *other* version that some bloke named Mitch Ryder cut....to *shreds!* This is one of my ALL-TIME UBER-MEGA-ULTRA RAVE-FAVE Motown songs...*EVER!* Thanx fer it, m8!

I may not agree with what you opine, but I shall defend to the death your right to say it. -Voltaire

@dmichaelsandphantom really it's a matter of taste....Each version has its merits, IMO....

Perhaps if he was "Speedy" Long, this recording would have charted. It's what it was, a late 50s-sounding R&B tune at the onset of the British invasion that was too slow for 1964's pop audience. However, I do see how some folks like it.

Like the bluesy shuffle of this song; he died needlessly. What's he doing out in the middle of the Detroit river & it's violent choppy waters anyway?

I can't disagree more with BadNews88. Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels rocked this song. The origninals always carry that nostalgic feeling, but MR & DW's version made you want to get up and shake the floor baby as did all of their stuff.
