I know what you mean, but I think a lot of it is just the way mid-aughts recording tech picked up the overtones in her voice. Her voice doesn’t sound *quite* balanced to me in recordings, but every time I’ve heard her live (never in Wicked, sadly, but in other stuff) she has sounded incredible. For what it’s worth, her version of DG has grown on me significantly over the years. Maybe my younger ears were picking up on overtones that my older ears can no longer hear… or maybe I just appreciate the maturity in her take now more than I once did. *shrug*
