I remember watching *Oz, the Great and Powerful* with Mila Kunis and James Franco, and that was the first time in my 50+ years of watching *The Wizard of Oz* that I felt sympathy for the wicked witch. In fact, a few months after seeing that movie, I preached a sermon on it about overcoming pain and learning to forgive, and included still shots from the movie. As you said, the villain sympathetic backstory does indeed seem to have originated with *Wicked.*

Agreed! The Witch in Into the Woods is an interesting experiment in that same direction, but Woods is about subverting EVERY character in every fairytale, so the Witch is just another character turned on her head. Focusing on just one character, particularly the villain, and subverting just their tropes or associations set Wicked apart

Yup, it was published in December of 1900, just before the beginning of the 20th century. 🙂Not only that, but it led to a Broadway smash which premiered in Chicago in 1902. There were other stage adaptations, both of "Wizard" and other Oz books, as well as several silent movies, including two produced by L. Frank Baum himself in 1914, and at least three radio series in the 1930's.

I was very skeptical of wicked being split into two movies. However I feel like it is a brilliant idea now considering how fast pace the show is it works on stage but as a film you need time to breathe. Also I heard they're adding elements of the book that never made it into the musical. I always loved the book. Although I can understand why people find it less interesting than the play. I know that the book is more political and at times can be a little boring to some readers.

Since it’s popularity in the 1930’s, it gained a animated TV series, an unofficial sequel Return to Oz, a series called Tin Man, an animated movie Legends of Oz: Dorothy’s Return, a broadway musical, 2013’s Oz the Great and Powerful, The Wiz and The Wiz Broadway Musical

Oz-- not just the Wizard-- was a major phenomenon long before 1939! The first book sold out almost instantly and gave rise to a monumentally successful stage extravaganza which ran from 1902 throughout most of the first decade of the 20th century. There are, all told, forty canon Oz books (1939 saw the publication of the 33rd), there were stage plays based on other Oz books, there were three radio series based on "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz," as well as two movies, one in 1910 and one in 1925, and L. Frank Baum himself produced two movies in 1914: _His Majesty, the Scarecrow of Oz_ and _The Patchwork Girl of Oz._ After he died, the book series continued under another author with Maud Baum's approval. There were commercial campaigns, toys, and all manner of Oziana before MGM got the film rights in 1938. Also, _Return to Oz_ isn't a sequel. And _The Wiz_ was on Broadway before it was a movie.

Wicked is my second favorite musical of all time. First being the phantom of the opera. I just turned 14 when I heard ' defying Gravity,' for the first time... It was like this smooth, yet fiery energy pulsing through my body. This was a year or so after when the show came out, and us theater kids at the time where obsessed! I was made fun of a lot by those who I thought would understand me, such as theater where I thought at first, I would be welcomed with open arms. I and other kids who had a disability were sadly not. Thankfully now I still do theater, and that has changed greatly for me. But the message of wicked still rings ever true now, even more so now than when I was 14. We not only have to start learning to accept those who seem different then us. But to just from my personal opinion, " to walk up to some one of a different background then yours and get to know them. we are all human when we truly take a step back from our fearing egos, and really see that someone who others are afraid of or doesn't like, really want' a friend, or to be understood for who they really are. I finally saw Wicked on stage with a friend a few years back, and I absolutely loved it! Prior to that, I'd only seen bootlegs on KZbin and listened to the music practically nonstop. I relate heavily to Elphaba because, as a Black, autistic/ADHD person, I have known my share of prejudice, and no matter how hard I tried, someone was determined to deem me wicked (pun absolutely intended); and like, Elphaba, I eventually just owned everything about who I am, realizing that someone is going to hate me no matter what, so I might as well just do me! I like to think that Elphaba, with Fiero, eventually found a community where they are safe and loved, for that is precisely what happened for me. I can't wait to see the movie this year!

I love Idina’s amazing performance and portrayal. I want to see how Cynthia pulls off her performance, but I just don’t have the drive to see Wicked anymore all because of the scandal between Ariana and Ethan. But no one can top Margaret. She was truly iconic and a force to be reckoned with. Just a side note, Margaret was a sweetheart IRL. She understood children and devoted her life to them. She was a kindergarten teacher before she started acting and she was more of a motherly figure to Judy garland when they made Oz together than Judy’s own mother.

Its honestly hard to believe the original movie was from 1939 - it holds up so well even in 2024. It is one of the best movies ever made. Judy Garland and that singing and acting was perfection. Everything after it felt creepy, weird, or just nowhere near as good.

Okay. I don't want to make any pre-screening judgements but there are definitely some things I would've done differently, like I would've made it all one movie with an intermission for theatrical release only. I think Cynthia Erivo is super talented, but I don't know if she's the right one for Elphaba. I think she should've done "The Color Purple" instead of Fantasia, and I know Idina Menzel is 52 but I still would've had her as Elphaba with makeup and visual effects de-aging her like Sigourney Weaver in "Avatar: The Way of Water". I feel the same way about Ariana Grande, Jonathan Bailey and Michelle Yeoh, I would've done Amanda Seyfried as Glinda, Aaron Tveit as Fiyero and Meryl Streep as Madame Morrible. I also would've included Kristen Chenoweth and Joel Grey in the cast. Everyone can disagree but be respectful to me please, I'm just stating my opinion.

Maguire's love story between Elphaba and Fiero (Who in the books is BLUE) is right up there with Rhett & Scarlet, Romeo & Juliet, Tristan & Isolde. The graphic sex scene in the book actually made me cry. Not thrilled with all the casting choices. It's difficult to fit a 3 hour musical into an hour forty five minute movie, so I understand the splitting into two parts; but, a year in-between is a bit long. The wizard of OZ is a completely different story than Wicked. The political references and the true evil of Madam M are staged straight out of DC itself. It's going to be good, but HOW good?

Didn’t the Ruby slippers originally belong to Nessarose in the story? That’s why Elphaba wanted them because they belonged to her older sister. Galinda was the one to take them and give them to Dorothy and that’s why Elphaba got so mad because her sister’s slippers got stolen! Did the Ruby slippers eventually go back to the original owner (Nessarose and Elphaba)?

Why is it a tale that can be told live on stage in 3 hours takes two movies, probably close to 3 hours each, to tell the same story, separated by a year long intermission? Part 1 had better be great. Tom Cruise found that his latest Mission Impossible two-parter's part one didn't ring all the bells and whistles, although I enjoyed it and have included it in my permanent collection with the others. Do we even know when we get part 2? Harry Potter's finale was a different story. I saw Wicked when it first opened on Broadway and I'll surely see the movie, I'm just wondering.

Yes; the tale is told that the higher-ups at MGM thought it was beneath the dignity of one of their performers to sing in a farmyard. Another is that they thought it slowed the film down. Producer Mervyn LeRoy, the visionary who cast the relatively unknown Judy Garland in the lead, insisted the song stay in, and of course, he was right.
