The amount of tests I've finished while listening to the 4th movement of his 5 symphony or the massacre in the 11th symphony is too many to count, not to mention rite of spring and other pieces that go crazy

I was in disbelief when I realized my mother (violinist) played in this recording! She especially loved this piece with Haitink. Wonderful to find, good stuff!

I went to a performance of this masterpiece recently with both of my kids, 4 and 2 years old, an old lady came to me at the end and congratulated me for doing a great work at parenting, what an amazing concert, I love this piece
@MattWeisherComposer2 жыл бұрын
Why?? And what exactly did you think she was saying? “Great parenting for introducing your children to Shostakovich in a very uncertain and scary way?” Or “great for having kids that were quiet enough to allow me to watch this piece!” In this scenario, which I really think is fake. Lmao you shouldn’t have done that. I’m a composer. And I LOVE Shostakovich. This is not the way to introduce 4 and 2-year-olds to Shostakovich. And I mean INTRODUCE. If your kids already knew Shostakovich, somehow-listening in the womb, I don’t know-and this whole post was a cry for attention…. Then that’s on you. Either way. Really dumb. :)

Total genius! Very simple “piano” type orchestration with monstrous impact! How many battles in the cinematic history they have similar music, very strongly influenced by this Scherzo!
@tomekkobialka2 жыл бұрын
Indeed. I've known this symphony for many years, but doing this reduction greatly raised my respect for Shosty. It is hard to imagine how this piece could be better "proportioned".

Shostakovich himself said this movement described Stalin. "Not the USSR under Stalin, but Stalin himself", in his own words.
@tomekkobialka2 жыл бұрын
Yes, I've heard that before. On a slightly related note, this concert was performed a few months after the Chernobyl disaster, which became one of the death knells of the Soviet Union, so the audience would've had that fresh in their memory as well.

I wish we germans had a composer who did write music like that in the 30's and wrote a movement portraying Hitler in the same way as Stalin is described here.
@alexeysavelyev2 жыл бұрын
Stalin is not described here, it's rather in 3rd movement. Shostakovich's music is very related to himself, rather than people surronding him, especially Stalin.

@@alexeysavelyev Then explain why he quotes this music again in the finale shortly before his own motif wins the day at the start of the coda? It is clearly him saying: "I'm still here motherfucker and you are dead and buried!"

@@Quotenwagnerianer he quotes his music very often in his various compositions, it's all directed directly to him, or the whole nation (the finale of 11th Symphony)
