This montage was shot on the Helios 44 and Sony fx3/a1, here’s a little backstory: Actually, I used to think the helios sounded like a gimmick lens, but now that I’ve actually used it for almost a year I have to admit I was completely wrong. Sure the bokeh is swirly, but that’s not the only reason why I love it - it’s also the softer rendering and flares that makes me prefer this lens over its modern counterparts. Vintage lenses are getting popular among filmmakers recently, and I’ve been slow on this train, but I get it now. I’m currently waiting for ebay to deliver me another one, which you’ll maybe hear about later. If you’re like me and have procrastinated getting the helios / other vintage lenses - well, I personally now only use modern lenses when I need autofocus at this point. It’s worth the $50 + adapter. (Link to the adapter I use in description) Anyway, hope you liked the video, thanks for watching.

Honestly, even before all this hype around vintage Soviet lenses, I always loved my Pentacon 50mm f1.8 lens, that I've got with my first ever camera, that was Praktica. Now adapted on my Fujifilm camera, this lens has a very unique rendering, I don't use any filters on it, but it stills blooms and does weird but beautiful artifacts around strong light sources.

It's really fun to watch how people start to appreciate the look of Helios nowadays as an aesthetic lens, when my main memory of it is being used with film slr Zenit when I first got into photography (it was pretty common setup and cheap setup in eastern Europe) Nevertheless, it worked beautifully in your hands.

does it ever get this foggy in vietnam? it's such a great set up for a cinematic vibe 😅 vintage lenses are definitely not "gimmicky". i got into vintage lenses since 2020-ish and fell in love shooting with it ever since. the soviet lenses have such low contrast that it renders skin in such a nice and pleasing way. i can't go back to shooting modern lenses 🥲
@teemu.mp43 ай бұрын
In the north it gets foggy often! Yeah I guess it's because the bokeh on the helios is so distinct, when people talk about the lens, it tends to overshadow the other features like how the softer tones etc just look better. I was just ignorant and should have started experimenting sooner.
