The problem is that the maggot is falling on a slack line, so potential missed bites. However, on the flip side, fish feeding off the deck are more likely to be swimming through, darting around to grab food. So they "should" straighten that line pretty quickly. As said, a trade off, but this is targetting fish that are feeding in a different way to those browsing on deck.

Tapered bulk they way to go making it easier to detect the bite as the bait falls through the water. Bulk and dropper like this means you won't get many bite indications as the float is set but the bait isn't on the bottom yet. As the last and most essential part of the baits fall is in the final part. Where as the taper shotting and last dropper which is closer to the hook will show up on you float tip especially if the bait is taken before the final shot has settled.

The problem with having a shot that far from the hook is how long it will take a bite to register on the float!

That is the trade off I'm afraid but worth thinking about anyway.....

Yeah but will it register on your float, with it being a maggot,

try the dropper shot about 1 hook length up the line and then see the drop rate difference ( hook length = 6ins then dropper shot would be about 12ins to from the hook ) i have some times fished and the dropper shot has come off and been getting weird bites only to find i was getting hit on the drop

I've been messing around with different shotting patterns using the tapered bulk that jamie and andy talk about on winning ways It definitely makes a difference although I've not got it quite right as i seem to miss a hell of a lot of bites but I've put a conventional rig on after missing bites and the bites dry up So there is definitely something in it If i work it out I'll let you know keep up the good vids dude🎣

Keep experimenting Martin, it's one of those areas that the pro anglers just get right and understand better than us I guess.

I noticed that despite being hooked in the head the maggot fell sideways on. It would be good to compare the hooked maggot fall with a loose fed maggot. Also in other videos I have seen maggots hooked in their middle so to increase the fall time.

That's a good idea, a side hooked maggot is supposed to slow down fall rate even further so I'll see if I can get this on film. Cheers, Scott

Even if catching on the deck a slower fall will mimic the loose feed a bit better

Logic tells me that the further away your shot is from the hook, the longer it will take for your bait to hit the required depth. However, consideration must always be given to the bait being used, and for the fish being targeted. Shotting patterns will vary for those reasons, and of course, whether fishing stillwater or a river.

I was thinking about this and it will be really useful for stream trout and perch under the pier, more if I consider.. Thx.

Not even close to being an effective pattern. To see a bite the fish have to dislodge the shot, the further away the shot the more bites you'll miss. You'd be lucky to even see one in winter, F1s especially will watch a bait fall follow it down and pick it up. You need the last shot to register on the float and be as close to the hook as is possible.

How was this news? That moving a lead weight further away from your hookbait made your hookbait fall slower?
