I live in a good middle class neighborhood surrounded by more of the same. I had an attempted home invasion robbery about 2 weeks ago. I'm 50+ female that lives alone. The only reason they didn't get past my door, that looks like a normal wood door with small window at the very top, was because my frame was also steel. it's the only one that I have been able to save up for to change. The only reason why I installed that one door with a steel frame was about a year ago a locksmith came to my house to redo all of my locks and he noticed that all of my doors were steel. He also brought to my attention that steel doors will do no good unless I have steel frames around the steel doors. They are pricey so I have to save up one door at a time. The one door I had replaced was the one door that was being kicked in and it held itself by God's grace! Being a daughter of an ex-marine I found myself shocked, saddened and realized I became complacent about my safety as well as anybody else that could have been a in my home. I realized I had to do something about it. I also knew that what I had in my home would not stop anybody, especially 2 anybody's, if they had chosen a different door to kick down. Pepper spray and bear spray doesn't do well inside of a home. The end of my story, I use the buckshot. I pray to God I never have to pull trigger inside of my home but if I have to I will and I will have to live with it for the rest of my life. If I don't chances are I will not be living. It seems that people view all Americans is gun-loving. I don't love guns but I have a GREAT respect for them. There are multiple reasons WHY I respect them but most of all, for home defense. By the way the gentleman that gave me that information about the steel frames was from the Middle East. He told me he had seen many doors get kicked in and the only one he saw the gave any time for the people to get out of their homes, we're homes that had steel doors with steel-frames. I will forever be grateful for that gentleman that gave me that piece of advice that afternoon. Best wishes from across the pond where my ancestors came from in 1803. Happy hunting!

@snoopy dubnation our gun laws are the best in the world. If america switched to the same licencing system we have there wouldn't be so many mass shootings and gun violence over there. like imagine, you could still buy all the guns you could buy now, you could still use guns for self defence and all that, but to buy them you would need a background check+police interviews+ property checks+a medical record check to see if you have any mental health issues. I only see positives.

@@srspower yea well, from what I hear you guys need some more guns. Guess I don't know how it works, I always thought they were illegal there. I've even heard there are muzzle energy restrictions on air guns. So are you allowed to get them with a special license or something?
@srspower
@srspower 4 жыл бұрын
@@thomasanderson6426 For Air rifles anyone over 18 can buy one provided it produces less than 12ft lb energy. Anything above that requires a firearms license. But most people who get a firearms license just get a rifle! But you need to show 'good reason' for each calibre to be issued a license and the Police visit your house to check your security cabinet etc.

Thanks for the video ... it was very helpful to see the demonstration of each level of shot right after each other, as well as the size differences in the first part. Well done. I hope that one day all of you in the UK regain your rights. It is a shame what has happened over there in regard to the infringements upon everyone; it should not be that way in a free society. It's absolutely a crime that your Olympic team can't practice in its own country.

In reference to the 00 buck @ 30 yards (meters, whatever) One of the benefits to the availability of different weapons here in the U.S. is the ability to select the weapon for the job: shotgun for close range, rifle for long range, pistol for out of the home protection. This was a great video, wonderful comparisons of both shell anatomy as well as physical impact of each type. good job.

Thanks for your testing results. A couple of points from the USA on huntiing and personal defense. 00 and 000 Buck shot is/was originally used for certain deer hunting seasons in the USA and Canada. With the advent new Rifled barrel shotguns, rifled slugs shells are becoming more common for deer and bigger game due to more accuracy and impact energy at close to moderate ranges of 150 yds or less. For personal defense in the USA the general rule of law is that you [or family ]are in immidiate danger of death or serious injury, usually meaning that the attacker is 20 yds or less in range. My home personal defense load is a 'commercial "Shotshell"which is a combination . 65 caliber round ball and 6 "00" Buckshot. I sequentially mix other loads in my 12 gauge Mossberg pump if I should happen to miss. A lot of ballistic gel testing as well as 12 guage deer hunting videos are available on You Tube.

There was a time when the UK made some of the best rifles & shotguns in the world. Their legacy sill lives on with collectors; often in the $10,000 range. Their drilling, double rifles and magnificent wood was regarded as some of the world's finest. Too bad you lost most of your rights.

Well we still do make the finest side by sides Holland and Holland, Purdy etc out of my price range though! But yes you would not believe what we have to go through just to get a .22 rifle a shotgun is easy by comparison and that still involves a police house inspection.

***** My Lord, man - police inspecting your home? Terrible, & does nothing productive.. I knew something was amiss when I read some of the different Bill from the House of Commons (& Lords) re: the banning of knives with points, serialization (numerically of edged objects like swords, hunting knives, etc).This can be found (there had been more thna a single proposal) by doing a SEARCH for "proposed knife legislation within the UK". Some fellows in the USA call idiots with "window dressing" legislation "Libtards" ( a leftist+a retarded individual) But I find that somewhat offensive as retarded individuals are challenged in their thinking my organic elements; it's not their decision. Nor do they (generally bear ill-will toward others for differences in their world view, economics, or being. Most seem without deceitful agenda and a good percentage become very productive, loving people. I can't say that about politicians on either side: marketing themselves, lying, & obsessed with self promotion.

John Grey Not only an inspection. Ammunition has to be locked away separately and you are limited to how many rounds you can own. Also each round you buy is recorded as is each one you fire if shot at a club. You have to have 'good reason' for each calibre ie: land to shoot on for game/vermin and/or membership of a club. You need two people to vouch for you, background check and a mental health check. It's no problem for me other than it is a LOT of hassle.

***** Notice how the gentleman (srspower) describes very closely some of the present administrations proposals. EXACTLY those folks that may NEED help would be shied away from a therapist if that person could deny them their rights if they said something emphatically. Most individuals have suffered loss at one time or another. Grief, depression or for that matter anger may be phrased in a manner misunderstood by someone w/ a political agenda or hypersensitive themselves (transference or negative counter-transference). Frankly, were some law enacted to make me see someone, I would not be honest w/ them for fear they may do MUCH more than deny me a firearm. It easily could be twisted into a "record or documentation" of mental heath problems were someone to express grief with intensity. Mental Health should NEVER be a political issue. The bond of trust is broken by simply divergent laws existing. One is PAYING to speak w/ another impartial person re: personal issues. Exactly those people who may need it the most would avoid proper therapy. There is already a disparity of power built into may less cometent therapists; why not think this out? Warning signs of suicidal ideation are NOT a political football. Anger-managment treatment is best treated by a well educated therapist; NOT some Graduate-Level marginalized young lady w/ her own issues to deal with. We have too many "marriage counselors", etc with degrees they got from a diploma-mill. It's really time for use to deal with the problem in a new manner; not doing the same thing & expecting differing results. We have approx. 300 million firearms in the USA they are also an inanimate object - they are not going away. All the more we would do is create ANOTHER banquet for Organized Crime. The problem of Violence is the issue. The UK had some MP's seriously propose legislation for the serialization of knives and the end of knives with points! Look up UK proposals for "dealing with knife crime". You will be saddened by the lack of clarity & "objectification" of a behaviour. One cannot legislate behaviour! It seems obvious yet it continues.

A friend of mine once had a burgler in his house stealing his TV. He went in to the room and closed his shotgun (unloaded) and asked the guy to leave. The burgler called the police! My friend went to court and was banned form owning shotguns for life and was lucky not to get a prison sentence. Things have got better in more recent years but you have to be very careful here in the UK.

daleon96 We haven't been able to own a firearm for self defence here since around 1930 and generally speaking you can only use 'reasonable force' so for instance if you put barbed wire over the top of your garden fence and a burglar cuts himself on it? You get prosecuted! I have no idea why it has come to this, but that is the way the UK is. Most people have no concept of liberty sadly.

While 00 buck is now used for defense, generally, here in the States, it was originally a deer hunting load. There's still a couple of states that mandate either buck or slugs for deer hunting. Considering the minimal distances for home defense, and the fact that pattern size at those distances will range around 3 inches or less, many of us opt for #6 or less for home defense so as to limit over penetration. Since the shot impacts on a limited area, this is highly effective at neutralizing bad guys, and still leaves those who are behind walls relatively safe. Longer distances, (more than a room), of course, require a buck load. i.e. #'s 4 buck (not the same as 4 shot), #1 buck, BB, 0, 00, & 000...... 00, of course, is an overall favorite because of balanced ball size and loading density. I also noticed that you tend towards a larger shot size application than we do here. Most of us start with #8 shot for dove and quail, moving to # 5 or 6 for ducks (smaller has trouble penetrating wing feathers), and #2, 3, or 4 for geese. Typically rabbits are hunted with the same size shot one is using for birds that season, and foxes and coyotes are hunted with small bore rifles. Just thought you might like to know how we compare.

A lot of people here in the states seem to love 00 buck for home defense as an idea. In practice, there's a lot risk of over-penetration and wall penetration, so most people don't use it out of fear they'll accidentally harm their neighbors or family.
@srspower
@srspower 9 жыл бұрын
SkorpyoTFC Yes I have heard that, then I hear a lot of macho bullcrap about how birdshot isn't going to do the job. At less than 15 yards birdshot will cause some horrific injuries. Not an issue here in the UK though as we aren't allowed to defend ourselves or our homes and our walls are made of brick so over penetration isn't an issue. Thanks for watching :)

Shotguns in America are used for hunting and in home defense. Most homes your distance is going to be under a 10 yard shot. The big + for shotgun in home defense is if you miss the bad guy and your kid is in a room behind them once the shot goes through the wall it has lost most of its energy . or you don’t have to worry about it going through an outer wall and hitting your neighbor

The choke you use is going to affect the pattern (spread) over distance. For the vast majority of defensive shooting in home defense, the range is rarely going to be over 15 yards. Take a look at your own home and ask yourself do you even have any rooms or hallways that is 30 yards long? Plus, if you shoot someone at 30 yards you are going to have a very tough time convincing a judge and jury that it was in self-defense.
@Tuton25
@Tuton25 7 жыл бұрын
The problem with the smaller shot size is you don't get enough penetration. What we consider a good round for self defense is 12-18 inches of consistent penetration. Four Buck is about as small as you want to go...
@DaveTex2375
@DaveTex2375 11 жыл бұрын
Good to hear from my limey bretheren. Fun with shotguns is universal. 00 Buck is great but inside your own home the buckshot can go through walls & hit innocents in other rooms. If that is a concern, any birdshot will ruin an intruder's day and not catch the neighbor with any stray shot.
@OhTheGeekness
@OhTheGeekness 7 жыл бұрын
You mention that we Americans use 00 buck for defense and also that the spread at 30 yards might lead to several of the pellets not hitting. I cannot speak for all Americans obviously but I think most of us are talking about "home defense" where there is an intruder and the distances are going to be across the living room or down the hall. The issue at these ranges is more likely to be over penetration.

I am indeed from the U.S, Florida specifically. My shotgun does take chokes, and I currently have a full turkey choke for it. Not planning too much in the way of small birds, but I'll probably try for turkey and maybe even deer with some of the higher loads. Talking with some friends of mine, #4 is apparently good for turkey, and I've seen several "turkey loads" that are #4's. For deer I may use 00 buck. A friend told me to look into #4 Buckshot, that's apparently different from regular #4 loads

the main reason one would use buckshot for defence is more about having all the rounds and energy going in to one target instead of our target and the TV, stereo, the wall etc. behind it. stray balls still damage things behind it

Shot 7 - 8 for doves. 5- 6 for pigeons. 4-5 for squirrels and pheasants. 2 steel for ducks and turkeys. Buck shots for deer and humans. Slugs for humans and cars, given that people are after you.

I live in the USA and we do have background checks by law before we can purchase firearms. Also you must have identification to purchase ammunition and you must be at least 18 to buy ammunition. Also in the southeastern region where I live where everyone and their grandmother is armed violent crime is significantly lower than states like California and New York. Because criminals aren't going to try something stupid where everyone is armed.

Im still looking for that good home defense round. Buck sounds like the right choice but i don't want to hurt anyone else in the home thats non intruder. Why I have been looking at the BB or #3,4 regardless they will hurt someone. I just want to be able to stop them with out hurting family. Maybe candy cane them BB then buck or buck then BB. Awesome video thanks for the explanation.

type of choke means most down range improved cylinder is not the same as full choke or even turkey magnum double full ported choke I recommend a shotgun that has interchangeable choke tubes for different applications considering my Remington 870 has taken a fox at 90 yards with a 2×4 duplex Remington 3inch mag shotshell

The 00buck 9 ball is what's used for defences BUT- ITS BETTER TO USE 6 BALL OR 8 BALL. cause the 9 ball allways has that one wild flyer that alot of times is the one that missed the target a wild flyer.. has potential to hit an innocent bystander.

Think about it how many yards inside your house ? The longest space in my house is about 12 feet. So for defensive load I use a slug . Double buck would be very effective at 12 feet as well .

By its nature, 00buck, if used for self defense, would have to be used well under 30 yards.

These are all very common rounds in the States. Interestingly enough, most of us prefer #8 to #4 shot for home defense because it has the least chance for over penetration. 00buck is an antipersonnel round and is unbelievably devastating. I'm pretty sure a lot of European countries have outlawed 00 for this reason (you all would know better than me though). #4 is what I think most people use because it is very effective and easily the most widely available shotgun round in the US. I can walk five minutes in any direction and buy #4 for home defense or hunting.
@newhuskytwenty
@newhuskytwenty 8 жыл бұрын
No, it's more nasty indeed. European countries have not banned 00 buck but the use of any lethal force for home defense, protection or however you want to call it. Shot an intruder and you'll end up in jail and poor. I got in Spain hunting shotguns but I can't legally use them against humans, no matter their intentions.

Here in Florida it is legal to shoot deer with buckshot, but we also have slugs that can be used for a little longer distances. It is illegal in other states though, the rules vary.Normally I would use my .270 Winchester if I were to go for a deer though. The deer are fairly small down here in Florida, and with all the scrub brush it's pretty rare to get those long shots down here. The terrain is pretty flat unless you get into the Northern part of the state. Good hunting to you.

all of these shells you have in this video I can get off the shelf at my local wal-mart store for 7.99 us or less . that's for a box of 5 to 25 depending on location . also for home at 30 feet ( give or take a little ) it ain't going to mater what shot you use . I understand there are people that will say oo bird shot won't kill or hurt people with winter clothes bullshit . I seen bird shot go through a jacket + a sweater worn by 1/4 inch dry wall and go out the back at 20 feet . that's also the average distance you will be at when you have a intruder . another thing that play's a factor even when hunting is barrel length and chock .

Very thorough and one of the best videos I've seen on this subject. My only and minor criticism would be that variation in target flexure upon impact could cause differences in penetration even for the same load. But the broader conclusions are clear. Thanks for the considerable effort that went into making this video. Is very helpful, especially to folks like me who are new to shotguns.

If you can get it try some #4 buckshot in 2 3/4 or 3 inch mag the pellet s are about 5.56mm and there are around 27 and 40 pellet in the cartridges. At 30 yards I get about a 2.5 foot spread out of an 18.5 inch open bore barrel. It messes up a piece of plywood something awful. Btw that is a beautiful shotgun that you all were using.
