Its a great art, but after almost 20yrs of practicing karate, i now find shotokan very linear and static compare to goju ryu and shukokai styles. I also think i prefer the pinan variants of the heian kata which are only slightly different but just enough to make them interesting. Shotokan has its place among styles, and i did enjoy it for many years and still practice heian yondan myself, just not as much as i used to.

I think a modified version of this could work well in a street fight. Check out the Cliff the Stuntman (Brad Pitt) fight vs Bruce Lee in ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD. They tell me Cliffs style is close to Shotokan. Looks like a very practical style. Not too fancy like Tae Kwan Do.

@@bodhidharmashmarma5179 I can see that you’re uneducated on the subject. What he is doing here is called ”kata” which is a form of movement patterns performed in a strict ”basic stance” which in katate is feet planted on the ground and may appear to you as inefficient and lacking power. Which it may even be in some cases. Hiwever, no one ever claimed this works in a real fight. Now the points mentioned above are totally different when they teach kumite (combat / sparring). In kumite the stance is more relaxed and narrower and you are taught pretty much the same things boxers are taught to generate power. In karate competition strikes to the head are not allowed (except in kyokushin which allows kicks to the head, hars knock outs there sometimes). That still doesn’t necessarily mean they don’t spar with hits to the head. At least that’s what I’ve had in my karate schools. And I’m always up for some sparring with like-minded practisioners. Of course boxing or, say, muay thai has more sparring, which is great for combat sports and self-defense situations. But we need to keep in mind that in the end before we look into the style one practises, we need to look at the individual utilising what they have learnt through their training. Boxing can be done a lot like karate in a way, too. You can only keep to the basics and shadow box/hit the bag and never spar or you can hone your basic techniques and utilise them in light sparring with others.

What is the purpose to fully lock out your back leg? To me, this seems like a good way for an opponent to break your joint.

If you don't you rob yourself of strength and power also it puts excessive wear on your knee joints and looks an eye sore in competition with a bent leg. Realistically you'll never fight like that but you build up the strength and muscle memory for the real deal.

You hit the nail on the head. "For competition" - that comment says it all. In actuality, locking out your knee puts more stress on your joints than leaving a slight bend. And in the mechanism of locking out the joint, you unnecessarily displace power in the rear. Your movement will become stifled and stiff. But if you want that militant, robotic, wkf competition look.. keep doing that. A slight bend will provide more fluidity and ease of power transfer from technique to techinque.
