Shawn I have to say brother we are cut from the same cloth, at least on the outdoors, self reliant front. I had 12.5 acres in the north backwoods of Maine with a log cabin that my wife and I lived in for a year. It was my heaven on earth until mental illness finally took my wife away from me. My property had to be sold and God brought me back to Washington to take care of my dad as he is aging. I thank God for his wisdom of things we don't understand and am honored to be able to care for my dad in his last years since I didn't see him much when I was a child, and he was my moms 24/7 caregiver for the last 7 years of her life as she battled breast cancer and severe R A. Thank you for giving me someone to relate to and kinda live vicariously through until God possibly grants me the privilege to go back to the mountains and build my cabin which has always been my dream since I was a small child. Wish we were closer brother I think we would be great friends. Keep doing what your doing and don't forget to thank God for your blessings. Peace and Happiness to you brother!

Thank- you for bringing mental health to the for ground. So many people brush it aside and say she passed from something else. I am so sorry that you lost your beautiful wife, someday this illness will be a thing of the past , but only by talking about it.Thank-you for caring for your parents now, I know at times it can get you down, but they took care of us not so long ago. I wish you well and hope you can reconnect with the outdoors again, if you have not already !!God Bless You ! Jason Harmon !!

Clearly you have endured great pain and suffering through these tragic losses, yet your steadfast faith in Him has helped you adapt and overcome as best as you can. And good on you for maintaining such a loving and caring demeanor man, especially when it comes to honoring and taking such deep and devout care for your parents as you have... For this there is no doubt that God will pour His blessings unto you and have His angels closely watching out for your safety well-being. But best and most rewarding of all is knowing that your name will be in His Book of Eternal Life! God bless you and yours my friend

When i was there after the fall of CCCP I noticed a lot of the log houses everywhere and some were truly ancient .A lot are abandoned now as Russians leave the country to live in the cities .
@davesrvchannel47177 жыл бұрын
the Russians will own a home in the city and own a log cabin in the countryside. They will go to the cabin in the summer months to grow food. They call their cabins Dotcha. I love the window trimmings they put on the outside of them, very ornate.

Yep, My inlaws had a really dacha. it was an idea of the soviets to create a sense of community .Depending on your party position you could have a small dacha or a massive mansion... my inlaws were former party people so there's was a two story affair with nice gardens which they looked after themselves. So much better than the soviet apartment blocks . :-) .

Shawn my wife and I stand with you Bro in all things! I don't want to sound or be negative with you, just realistic in that this shou sugi ban roof is great for ok for Japan but not here! Please also be reminded that every where on your roof you have appled a nail into your roof, exposed to the weather, Do you not think that water won't penetrate over the next couple of yrs. and cause leaks inside? Myself personally with 28 yrs. hands on every type of roofing would never apply this type of application. I say within a few yrs. 2 at the most you will be applying a metal roof or cedar shakes over top of your shou sugi ban roof! My advice and Dieter Schneider advice below is something to reconsider ! We love you Shawn and your family. Sincerely yours MJC
@MySelfReliance7 жыл бұрын
mJ c Thanks. With 5 layers of redundancy, I know it's not going to leak into the cabin (didn't even leak before I put the membrane on). But, water may get between the layers and cause other issues. The beauty of this system is that I can easily take off boards to inspect it and/or replace things as necessary. I'm looking forward to seeing how it goes.

Your project is amazing and the roof looks great. However, I would have done the roof a bit different to get better airflow under the roof boards. The roof battens should go down the roof, not horizontal (to allow water to run down), then put some spaced sheating over to mount the boards. The boards in the first layers should also have good distance between them, and there should be a groove on each side of each board to allow water to run down. The boards you put on top should be equal size as the boards under, and also have groove facing down matching the boards under (forming a tunnel for water). That's how we do it here in Norway, and it's raining a lot here.
@ciarancre45117 жыл бұрын
Dieter Schneider a lot of work involved but all you said makes sense I shall use this technique next time, thank you...
@JF-fx2qv7 жыл бұрын
I think I follow. The roof(s) you speak of in Norway, how long does it last ?
@DieterSchneider7 жыл бұрын
We have some of the oldest wooden churches in the world here (close to 1000 years old), and they all have wooden tile roofs. However the roofs have not lived that long, they need repair and rotten tiles must be replaced. I'm not sure how long the tiles last, and they are treated with tar and charcoal. The tiles are made of slow grown mountain fir heart wood, which also naturally contain lots of resin which make it last longer. The commercial wooden roofs they sell today (similar to the one in this video) can last up to 75 years if you use pressure treated wood. At least, that's what sellers say. Good airflow i extremely important to make it last as long as possible.
@Rick_Sanchez_C137_7 жыл бұрын
It also appears that you failed to leave a drip edge. The charred boards should hang down at least a half inch farther than other boards they touch/are attached to. (I know, too late now; but you forgot to consult me before you installed the boards). ;-) Other than that it looks great. Love the yakisugi.

With heavy snows i would have went with smoothe steel,it would let the snow slide off and it would last a lot longer.
