The use of AI image generators in woodworking is a polarizing topic with both positive and negative effects.
In this video, I explore the positive ways in which AI image generators can help woodworkers create unique and stunning designs. With the ability to save time and effort, generate complex and intricate designs, create custom pieces, and experiment with different design options, AI image generators have the potential to revolutionize the woodworking industry.
One significant concern is the potential for AI-generated designs to create false narratives, where pieces are presented as handcrafted when they are actually not. This can lead to a decrease in the value of handcrafted pieces and a loss of appreciation for the artistry and craftsmanship that goes into creating them.
Join me as I examine this issue and discuss ways to ensure authenticity and transparency in woodworking design. If you're a woodworker looking to preserve the value of handcrafted pieces, this video is a must-watch!
Oh, and if you want to know which images are real, and which are the fakes, you'll have to subscribe and check my Community posts.

Great video. Can I add after reading a lot of the comments. You can't beat a video of the craftsperson doing the actual real work involved. This doesn't lie. You've nailed it in one. Photo's, stills, NON MOVING FOOTAGE CAN LIE. This is a pipe dream lie hopefully to come true. Cheers Tony👍

I don’t really see how this is an issue for woodworkers. You can’t sell the image in our line of work. A much bigger issue for artists and content creators. There was a great video out out months ago where a woodworker used mid journey to design a lamp. Great work.

I saw that video, and he's doubled down on using AI. On a personal level, if someone wanted to use AI to come up with an intricate design for personal use, more power to ya. Perhaps you up your skill level, or maybe find a new avenue of design to explore. But as you mention, content creators are going to be exploiting these programs for financial gain at the expense of truly creative people.

I struggled. I couldn’t tell which was real. I’m not worried about AI. But I think your concern about people creating a website with fake images is valid. Your comment about people won’t last long if they do that though…. I don’t agree. That’s the scary thing. The guy that is willing to create that fake website could totally go out of business… but not until he screws some people over. Then… that kind of person will create a new business and do it again. I don’t know. I’m not going to lose any sleep over it. But I personally would rather go to Pinterest to get my ideas rather than AI. Having said that… I do have a Glowforge laser and they have this in their system now. And… I’ve used it. My son is all about it and made some things. I’ve had my laser for a year. He’s made two things on it. And both were in the last week after I showed him the AI.

I guess my post didn't go through earlier because I linked to an article. There is a person that recently came out and said that most of his photos on Instagram are AI generated. He processes them in Photoshop after they are generated. I don't have any issues with AI generated photographs as long as it is disclosed that the photograph is AI generated.

As good as these generators are, the discerning eye can still spot them. I would hope most people posting these AI generated images would disclose that crucial piece of information, but with all of these platforms monetizing, it's just too easy to cheat

I just love the Skynet comment it definitely brings back memories and again it's like you say just because you can doesn't mean you should. I recall way back when scientists said that they had the ability to reproduce extinct species of animals and then those scientists went out and to prove a point cloned a sheep they called Dolly 🤔 again just because you can doesn't mean you should!!! As always buddy 💯% 👍 🇬🇧.

Good ol Dolly, heck of a sheep! I just listened to an interesting podcast on this subject and the speaker was making the analogy of AI to fast food. Essentially, just because we have access to the quick and inexpensive calories, doesn't mean we should always choose that option. Most times we prefer the human experience, so we take our time at at a sit down restaurant, and the meal isn't really the point.
@simonr6793

@Inland Wood & Resin - Artist & Crafter I know exactly what you mean, but on a slightly different note how often do you see the younger generation doing the sit down meal thing I've four of my own from 30 down to 21 and honestly without their phones this generation is totally lost. Its like the art of communication has been lost forever and it makes me wonder what it will be like in say 50 yrs, most of them just grunt nowadays almost like we have gone back intime and becoming cavemen again.

Before there was a.i. resume padding. There was just people who used false images they took credit for. My standard response to employers when asked for pictures is " Sorry I don't stop working for selfies." But I will submit for your consideration the problem isn't lying, it's cad, cam, and 3d printing that spells a real problem.
@inlandwoodandresin
@inlandwoodandresin Жыл бұрын
There's a time and place for cad, cam, and 3D printing, but absolutely no place for plagiarism and/or outright lying. I swear after releasing this video, I saw three stories of IG "influencers" either openly admitting to using AI and not being upfront about it to their audience, or getting caught using AI claiming the work as their own when in fact it wasn't. I never thought I'd say this, but if it's not video, I'm going to have a hard time believing it as real

Well I instantly noticed you left the little text generator or AI watermark in the bottom right of images 1, 3, & 5 so those are -all ruled out ad AI- lol (plus 3 has a weird quadruple shadow thing going on) That leaves 2 & 4 🤔 The 2nd image has stylistic similarities to the other AI pics and that weird strip of cloth on the floor in the dining room leads my intuition to say that -number 2 is also AI- lmao That leaves number 4 as my guess for the "real" image 💯

Good eye. Images 4, 7, 8, 9, 10 are real I projects way way back. Since releasing this video I have noticed so many posts (mainly on FB) of AI generated images. What really gets me is the lack of a critical eye. Some of these AI posts are so obviously fake, and yet commenters are always like "OMG this is so beautiful," or "How much?" I wonder of how many people have been taken advantage of because they really can't decern fake from real?

I struggled with all of them. I think you made the bed in the first set and I don't think you made the last one in the last set, the live edge table. You've got no chance really looking at the pictures. This is great for the rip off artists who take the money and run using big advertising to generate new customers all the time. They don't need repeat word of mouth local business. Cheers Tony

This is an interesting video. I think that your concerns are valid, but that real craftspeople will prevail. People could be unethical and steal images for years now and claim them to be their own. If AI / robots could start actually designing and creating real things that solve problems and look good- then we should be very scared for our jobs lol. Maybe that day comes soon… the thing with AI images, is that it can only create what it has references for from the depths of the internet. Sooo it knows generally what a farmhouse table looks like based off what the internet tells it that should look and feel like. What about when there’s no reference? Can the AI actually problem solve, and design with originality and function for HUMANS. Probably never, without human input to the coding of course. Also- why did you take down the rejection of big woodworking video? That kind of blew up your channel… just curious. Change in opinion? Too much riff raff with other creators?

I'm curious and somewhat worried about how AI will integrate with machines like CNC or lasers. Apparently those who are significantly more code literate than myself are using things like ChatGPT to write code for CNC. I agree with you, I don't see AI completely replacing craftspeople/artists, but I do see AI eventually catering to the cost cutters of the world. I put "that" video on private simply because I'm tired of seeing it, attempting to move on from that message (I can't maintain being angry & disappointed forever), and somewhat tired of the skillfully crafted comments getting through that are uttering the same thing I've read 500+ times. And yes, there's been some seriously awful things filtered out that should never be wished on another person, or their family. I wish there was a feature to turn off seeing comments for certain videos from the creator side of things, but allow viewers to continue to comment away.

Very interesting. Anything that comes along is going to be abused or exploited by a certain % of people, so I don't think that will be anything new. I like it if the craftsman is honest about using it up front to generate ideas or examples for potential customers. If someone uses AI to generate images that they then take credit for building... they will get shut down in a hurry if they can't deliver. Bad news travels faster than light it seems. Reputation is everything.
