The scholars of the Standing Committee for Issuing Fatwas were asked: Is it permissible to vote in elections and nominate people for them? Please note that our country is ruled according to something other than that which Allaah revealed? They replied: It is not permissible for a Muslim to nominate himself in the hope that he can become part of a system which rules according to something other than that which Allaah has revealed and operates according to something other than the sharee’ah of Islam. It is not permissible for a Muslim to vote for him or for anyone else who will work in that government, unless the one who nominates himself or those who vote for him hope that by getting involved in that they will be able to change the system to one that operates according to the sharee’ah of Islam, and they are using this as a means to overcome the system of government, provided that the one who nominates himself will not accept any position after being elected except one that does not go against Islamic sharee’ah. Dear admin, please pass this story to Syaikh Yasir Qadhi, I came from the biggest muslim country in the world (after Pakistan, off course) and for the last decade there was a "movement" called to purified the Islam and their clerics and ulamas forbid us to vote and they gave haram fatwa to join the politic. As the result for about a decade, the liberals and non muslim took over the political leadership in this country, and as predicted they were making situations very uncomfortable for us, but still those clerics persuaded us to avoid anything about politic. But this year the table is turning, a good leader from this ummah, had tried to persuade those clerics to change their fatwa about democracy and voting, and as result this year more muslims went voting and as predicted now we have more politicians that pro muslim, situations still the same but slowly things will get better in here, my point is, as you already said in your lecture, we need to come together and overcome our differences, because there are many bigger issues than our different views of fatwas, this ummah need to come together. Thank you again for your great lectures, may Allah always bless you and your family and give you many rewards.

Nope, Muslims only should or can vote or elect a leader when the situation is permissible by Islam, like selecting a community leader or a leader for some purpose like building a masjid or in a journey or any sort. But when the system is non Islamic, then Muslims can’t elect or select or participate, rather convey the Dawah to Islamic solution and benefit of implementation of Islam which is always relevant, even if you don’t want to understand the weight of the Deen of Allah. Muslims can elect or select or vote when the system is Islamic already, otherwise the dhulm or injustice of Kufr will be justified. And, this is clearly not related to the treaty of Hudaibiya. There was nothing non Islamic in the treaty of Hudaibiya even if it was apparently humiliating towards Muslims. It is not simplistic, rather jumping towards the incorrect secular capitalistic liberal ideas is simpler but can’t solve the problems of anyone really. Man made ideas aren’t based on any correct doctrine anyway. Look at the banking system that runs on the idea of usury, look at fractional reserve banking system, etc. And under this so called great western systems, we saw Hiroshima, we saw Nagasaki, we saw Vietnam, we are seeing Palestine, etc. You don’t get yourself out of society but you don’t get engaged and subscribe to the wrong system. Why are you trying to make advanced things simple and simple things advanced and complicated, have clear faith in Allah SWT.

Salaams, I live in Southern California in the county of San Bernardino and we have the highest populated state in the nation. I became a American citizen in August 2009 and yes I do vote as always, especially for propositions and laws for the greater benefit for our society. This November 5, 2024 I will vote YES to increase the California minimum wage to $18 an hour from $16 an hour to adjust for inflation and to help myself and others increase in wealth to stabilize our personal expenses and savings. I appreciate this perspective but please be clear that African American Muslim communities have always been involved in civic processes, from Malcolm X going to Selma to meet with voting rights activists to W.D. Muhammad political engagement to Dr. Sherman Jackson speaking at the Democratic National Convention. So please be clear about this conversation is for immigrant Muslims and not the rest of us. Anyone who call to the leadership and support to any socio-political system other than Islam is a thagut himself and must be rejected. The solution lies in walking a much harder road than this soft passive road of voting and sitting back and protesting while the ummah is being decimated, the solution is the same and will always remain the same as that implemented by the Righteous Chaliphs and sahhabàs, establishing upright Islimic Leadership , uniting the Ummah loyal to upholding the Deen of Islam as the only legitimate way of life commanded by Allah as a wa jal. Salam, I relate election of the khulafa e rashideen after the Prophet (saw) by electoral vote because few people were nominated and some elders, not the whole city, selected their choice. The one with most hand shake (aka bait) won the khilafa. Hope this helps.

Why only present 2 stark options -- now choose the lesser of the 2 evils. There is always a third option: not voting. Why is that not an option? When you tell people, you have to choose the lesser of 2 evils, that implies you HAVE to choose one of these. No, you don't HAVE to.

Choosing not to vote just increases the majority of the winning party. For example in the UK, majority of labour MPs abstained from the ceasefire vote, which allowed the Tories who voted against to allow Israel to continue the genocide. The third option is voting for third parties to weaken the majority of the two parties. Therefore, reducing the amount of power the elected party has.

But not just vote, they need to approach Kamala Harris now she’s talking about ceasefire and two states solution and that what all Muslims want today so if we hear a politician saying she wants to do that the Muslims should vote for her and once she is in office keep pressure on her and have her keep her promises, and remember she will want a second term.
