Even if some people want to think of Anastasia as a Disney Princess, as we all know she'll never officially be one because you know if Disney wanted to make Anastasia one of their products then they would've thought to make the Anastasia film first, but Don Bluth beat them to it...i know everything i said is obvious but surely on some level you all know what i mean.

I know what you mean, but that was in the 90s the company was completely different, under different leadership, with different goals, Disney has changed a lot in the last 30 years, so maybe they could think of capitalizing on Anastasia, just saying. They could have passed it on back then, but right now they own it and they can use it for whatever they want

Hi!! Anastasia Musical fan here. To answer your question as to whether or not the play discusses the actual fate of the real-life Anastasia, it doesn't directly but the ending song alludes to the fact that the belief in Anastasia being alive being just a beautiful dream. The dowager empress even directly says as such, and Gleb state's that 'the new order has no need for fairytales. The case is closed.' The playwriters were definitely aware of the 2007 discovery of the final two sets of remains but saying that she died in real life at the end of the musical would not only make the musical seem pointless but be a massive bummer for audiences. So instead, they framed the story as a fairytale and a dream as opposed to a 1:1 retelling of history despite the film being more historically accurate. I hope this helps!

As a rule, disney is never EVER loyal to the source material, be it historical, folkloric or (relatively) modern fiction. They always put something of their own, for good and for bad The problem is obvious that there's a big difference between changing a story and changing history, especially when it's a big production that gets people's attention As someone who loves history, I do love this movies and I think they should exist, but like you said, to lay clearly down that they're a story and not history ... also, I think your sarcasm was extra sharp today .w.

Ok we were taught history. Here is the wier part. From what I remember the teacher never made it clear that his was an event from 80+ years ago. So I remember being horrify thinking this was something that happen lthat year... in America. Later the teacher clarify, but for a while I was going around thinking otherwise.

From what I've learned but I'm unsure on this, a lot of fairy tales may have in theory been based on myths & legends possibly based on real people or a mish-mash of different people & supposed events, although retold and watered-down as folklore while the historical true story fades away, evolving into fantastical fairy tale settings over time, the story of Anastasia (though not the true story) might be considered a relatively recent example of this. I not sure if Anastasia & her film should be added to the Disney Princesses canon but I wouldn't mind (note, sadly and weirdly there's a few Disney Princesses that aren't considered Disney Princesses and some were but lost their Disney Princess status.) Regardless, someone who should be added to Disney's Fairies line-up is Crysta from FernGully: The Last Rain Forest, (especially since FernGully is in either Australia or New Zealand and unless I'm mistaken, the historical connection Peter Pan's 'Never-Never Land' has with Australia), I'd love to see a crossover movie where Tinker Bell & Crysta meet & team-up, imagine if both at the beginning, separately & unknowingly have to go off on an adventure save their home from a common threat and on their journeys they eventually cross paths and discover they have to work together since the only way to save everyone is to use the magic the other possesses, exploring the differences and similarities the two types of fairies and each other has...

Basically as far I can tell Russians who I spoke to in my child-like Cyrillic find "Anastasia" to be movie fluff and are aware of the myths so it was like "Oh Americans know the myth too". As a white American I do think it was a bit culturally insensitive on Disney’s part to adapt a true tragic story into this Disney fairytale movie. But I do think though Pocahontas was an important film when it came to producing films based on other cultures. Such as Moana had experts from the Pacific Islands involve in the writing, the songs, and the only white cast member was Alan Tudick and he played as the chicken(a role pretty much anyone could play). If Pocahontas did make Disney improve in that regard I do think that is a good thing. However I do still wish they did better with the production of Pocahontas and made something that I think should’ve been more respectful to Native Americans and not disneyfy a tragic real life story. Now if they changed the characters names, and maybe have the setting be a completely made up city and not Jamestown, than maybe that could’ve been better but given I’m not Native American I don’t know for a fact if that would’ve fixed everything with the film, now if any of you guys are Native American please feel free to let me know what you think I would love to hear from your perspective.

For context, this is the same level of offensiveness of using a Nazi flag when talking something about Germany. Just because it ended fairly recently, and had a very long active history, does not mean it's okay to do this. Just an FYI Oh also Anastasia is a tragic insensitivity, but at the same time we Russians do enjoy it for the fairy tale it is. We would love a disclaimer at the beginning though, that would be a step in the right direction. But hey, in the end you're still a good KZbin and I enjoy your content.
