There's a fine line. Between helping someone improve and insulting them to the point they want nothing to do with art at all anymore.

Exactly! If the only opinion someone has about your art is “Wow! Cool!” all the time, it can give a sense that they only commented to comment, and that they don’t really care. It can drive you nuts. I know I am driven nuts about this. Even if I say that I want the harshest criticism out there, I’ll still get “ Cool!”. I know that this isn’t really their opinion, because I can put ZERO effort into a piece, it can look like the lamest thing someone could’ve come up with, the idea could have been beaten to death, and still, “Oh wow! Beautiful!” is the only thing I see. I believe people should always get a self confidence boost, but when you’ve been there for 9 months and you only get that, it can actually have the opposite effect! To me, someone giving criticism is them telling me that they care about me improving, and to me, that’s the best compliment ever. So, to make sure nobody feels like that, when it doesn’t say what type of crit someone wants, I do the compliment sandwich. -Something that I like about the piece -Something that needs improving -Something that I like about the piece. Eg: The overall composition of the piece looks great, especially on that part, however the anatomy, especially in the face, needs a lot of improvement. I also think the colours you used go together extremely well! See? Shows like I care, without being too harsh. I am SO tired of receiving the same cookie-cutter bull every time. I relate to your comment so much!
@zaynab-to-a4 жыл бұрын
@@comiccatlaz9952 Yeah! That's exactly how I feel. Plus when I'm only getting the most generic of compliments, I might be exaggerating but sometimes it doesn't feel like they even looked at my art or tried to think about it at all, since you can say "wow, that's good!" or "cool!" to basically anything, not even just art.

There's a simple answer. Yes, they should. It's motivational to most beggining artists, but criticism and borderline insulting their art is a different thing. Like for example this could be constructive criticism " Hm, the anatomy looks a little off, and you may wanna fix the head shape a little. " And this is just an insult towards their art " This is so ugly, everything isn't right about it, stop drawing. " Which one was criticism, first or second one? *HINT IT'S THE FIRST ONE*

Criticism should, to me, always be a bit sweet. Like... hiding Brussels sprouts inside a cookie! I ALWAYS do that, because I remember eating those cookies and still feeling good yet improving since I got sweet, healthy tips. Also, it felt so great since another artist was being so sweet yet caring to me, getting involved in my Art in such a sweet, loving way. I give compliments, but I always balance it with tips. ‘ Wow! You are amazing at lining! ~ And the eyes are stunning ** But I noticed that the nose is a bit strange. Maybe it’s too high? Practicing noses a bit more could help with that. Also, don’t forget to practice hands too, I know you can do it ~ Keep it up sweetie, can’t wait to see your next upload!

Nah, I don't find that effective to me honestly. I prefer constructive critique with less sugar coating and more brussel sprouts. Because too much sugar coating only makes an artist cocky about making mistakes since they know that people would just be all rainbows about it. And obviously that's a bad thing since they would not improve that much.
@azzanine17106 жыл бұрын
I partially agree however people in a professional capacity are likely to ignore critique delivered softly, so you might have to employ some cunning wit with demonstrable observations to make a professional take note. Also I wouldn't open up with "Your amazing" it's discordant and off putting. Imagine I said "Wow you have a gorgeous face... only your eyebrows are too thick, your nose is crooked and you really need to watch some makeup tutorials about blending also see a doctor about that rash" It would be a bit jarring and make it insulting. People always focus on the negative and any positive you set up can end up contributing to the negative. it's like telling someone to stand on a ladder before you push them. My example would be; "You seem to be rather competent at your line work, they are quite crisp and clean. However something seems a little off with the facial anatomy, mainly the alignment and orientation of the nose, I will say it's slight as I can't quite pin down the issue. A cursory glance makes me think it's orientated a bit too high on the face and it doesn't appear deliberate. Google images of faces and compare images of real peoples faces sketch them and figure out the relations between features. Also the hands need a lot of work, yeah... hands are a pain to master, even when you get them perfect they end up not matching the rest of the figure, all you can do is practice. I see potential here so long as you are diligent and cultivate your skill, I best see more from you." One thing I added was an empathetic demonstration, shows that you understand the struggle makes it seem less likely you are just shitcanning them for lulz. Also be incredibly specific, vagueness gives them an opportunity to dismiss your input. Gotta remember there's more then just bitter and sweet.

So there's a couple problems with this advice I want to point out. 1: Not everyone is drawing for any reason beyond having fun, and someone who's just drawing for fun is allowed to be shit at it. If they want to not be shit, they need to come to that perspective on their own. It also isn't a sin to suck at art, nor is it worth your time to try and 'correct' it. 2: "Distance yourself from your art" isn't something you can tell younger people who often fuel their creativity through raw emotion. When your work becomes an emotional outlet, anything that anyone says about it will be taken personally. This is more than just a learned skill, it's an aspect of maturity and self-awareness that people need to come into through self-discovery. Your advice makes it sound like you discourage this mode of self-discovery, and better wording would have been "Recognize that your art doesn't mean to others what it means to you." Really though, for 2 especially, what personal experience taught me was to learn to love my ideas independent of their execution. When the execution comes under scrutiny, it means the idea is safe in my head, ready for me to do a better job at realizing it the next time. That's the second-best advice I can give a younger artist. The best advice I can give a younger artist is: Seek advice for yourself, and only yourself. Look to improve because YOU want to, because YOU think your art needs to look better. Don't do it because you think it'll make you more popular, because I've seen some absolute trash artists reach massive followings. (All you gotta do for that is be prolific and appeal to a niche, and networking helps too.) If your only reason for improvement is because you think it'll make you famous, you're gonna grow into a really bitter person who resents everyone who's worse than you with bigger followings. But if you strive for improvement on YOUR terms, if you internalize your own success, you will find contentment in the journey.

Bad criticism: Omg this is so cringe, your anatomy is shitty, learn how to actually draw before you curse us with your hellish 'art' Good criticism: Good job! I can see improvement, however I would work on the anatomy of the arms. Try looking at real life, and draw from that. There's no shame in using references, all the best artists use them and they help you improve. If you squint you can see some subtle differences

I definitely agree with you! The thing about criticism is that while for a aspiring artist, it's important to get better, and people giving suggestions, or criticism, etc can really help with improving, but the thing is. It's also to important to not be too harsh. There's a certain line between telling a person: "You could definitely improve on this." Telling the person they have room for improvement- and sometimes even giving tips on how to improve- and... Just screaming that their art is terrible and no one will ever like it, because I've seen a good deal of people like that... Lets look at the dictionary definition of criticism: "the analysis and judgment of the merits and faults of a literary or artistic work." Which sounds much more like explaining what one could improve on, rather then just telling them the entire thing's /horrible/ without giving any real reason why. And that's not to say that when you give criticism you should ALWAYS give tips, because as long as you're polite about it, even just telling a person what they could improve on can be helpful. I, personally, give criticism quite a lot. Towards tv shows, books, artwork, random fanfiction on the internet- I think you get the point. And my personal way of doing so is by explaining the pros and cons to give them a idea of what I personally think is good and what could use some improving, followed up by tips on how they could possibly help themselves improve. For example: I'm bluntly aware of my poor abilities in doing posture, or poses, and how, while I'm received several compliments on my writing being very expressive, it also lacks a large vocabulary, often resulting in the same word being used too many times for it to sound good. However, I role-play partly to help my writing improve and partly to develop my characters through the RPs. And I plan to start doing a weekly thing where every Saturday, I have to practice on postures and poses and such by sketching out different poses and such. There are plenty of other things I'm perfectly aware I could improve on, I'm no expert, and even experts can improve plenty. But those are very specific ones I've been focusing on as of late. But! All that considered, there's also the fact that some people don't care for criticism and would rather just do what they do. And that's perfectly fine. I don't feel like that specifically means no one would have the right to say they don't particularly like it, but they should heed in mind this person isn't looking for criticism, and they should still be respectful, all things considered, there's no reason to walk up to some person who just enjoys drawing and say "My art's better then yours!" Or anything like that. That's just kinda rude either way, but.. I think you get the point. My brother use to tell me that no one liked my art and my family only says they like it because I'm family, and they have to. A person... Doesn't have the right to tell another person that. Like, aside from the fact some people are already really insecure and that just make them feel worse, that's a pretty /big/ predicament to make, and even if they told you themselves, that's still a kinda nasty thing to tell someone. Or the people who make videos about the most "Cringe worthy art" and put a bunch of new people's art on there, some people are going to get very discouraged by this stuff. So I think no matter what, it's best to be nice about it, because some people ARE going to just start thinking they aren't good enough and they aren't GOING to be good enough when people are that mean about it. But basically, the point is: It's fine to give criticism, just keep it constructive: Let them know what they could do better, and possibly even give suggestions off of how you do these things. But don't be too harsh, and keep in mind not everyone does things the same way as you. (Gosh, that ended up being super long...XD)

I wrote a rough draft of the first chapter of a book I started, yesterday and sent it to my friends. They criticized it very harshly. It hurt my feelings, I get that without criticism you can't get better but there is a point where you need to stop. Their criticism brought me to tears, it discouraged me and now I've pretty much given up writing my book. I know people are going to call me stupid because 'without criticism you can't improve' and shit. I also know people hate people who can't take criticism and I hate that I'm one of those people who has trouble taking it.
@KaizenKitty6 жыл бұрын
first drafts are always bad, and they're supposed to be (mine are horrible XD... it takes me at least 3 drafts to write something halfway decent) so it's perfectly normal if the first version of the first chapter you wrote is not that good. maybe it's a good idea to develop the story more before sharing first drafts with friends/beta readrs: they can't help you fix a first draft (first drafts often include long messy parts that just distract from the story and can be confusing to read). generally I think it's a good idea to at least write 2 drafts before sharing your writing with anyone. then what they get to see is actually your writing, you at your best. and then they really get a better picture of the story. a good aweome great story can be overshadowed by poor execution. don't give up on a story you love because someone didn't like the words you used to tell it in a first draft.

From my experience, it’s been hard to get criticism. I remember in high school I had an art teacher I didn’t like much, as I’d always ask for his opinion and he’d just tell me it looks good. Would never give constructive criticism even if I asked for it. If you were having trouble doing something, he’d be quick to do it for you, rather than give you advice. I could probably go on for ages, but I’d rather limit how much I’m writing, TL;DR? I had an art teacher that wouldn’t give constructive criticism

This is really helpful! I have been practicing art for a few weeks in order to create comics that reflect scenes from stories I've written, and I had a rough time when a few of my friends were shoveling sprouts down my throat and other, consistent artist friends had been giving me a nice balance of cookies and sprouts. Honestly, it was difficult to have a shovel-load of sprouts land on a first draft of concept art I am super proud of, but having a balance of both is super helpful, especially if said critic is able to present a positively delivered alternative that teaches a skill one may not have known beforehand. Cookies are great, but a bit of health food is good every now and then, too!

I had a friend start doing art near the middle of lockdown, I had been talking about it for ages so she took it up and my main thing for criticism was two compliments per criticism, for instance “ I really like the color pallet, it really suits the mood and I love the clothing design, it really shows her personality, but I would suggest changing up the facial expression a tad, to show that she’s cheerful” and I made it super clear that if she ever needed help with anything, that I’d do my best. I’m honestly really proud of her and can’t wait to more projects and stuff with her!

Yes, I think that beginning artists should get criticism. But only the constructive type. If they’re just beginning they may not understand the whole point of criticism. I think if you are going to critique a piece you should be very light hearted about it and make sure they understand you are only trying to help. I’ve personally never liked getting criticism that wasn’t constructive, it kind of hurt because they weren’t even a super professional artist themself. Once someone told me that the prices I was asking for weren’t “fair” for my artwork but when I looked at their art, not being too rude to them, they were asking for even more than I was and their art didn’t really look.. that great? It made me feel low on a chart of good artists and I felt they could have been more open minded before criticizing. I think the lesson is that critique is good, but not when it’s too harmful to an artist’s mental health 🥰

What you said here, with the comparison of criticism and likes with brussel sprouts and cookies and the difference between good criticism and bad criticism, made some really good points on how I feel about criticism. The way I see Bad Criticism is when someone bashes another for the way they not only do their work, but also for the way they think and say things, which to me, is very harsh in a way that ruins the fun for art for the person they're bashing, and could make the artist want to limit him/herself with her art. I met someone who wasn't any real help to me at all. I'm not gonna mention his username, but I can tell you what he used to do to me. All he did was bash me for the way I think, say and do my art, and made parody art, which made me feel discouraged, and want to limit myself with my art on certain outfits and poses I find simple and easy. Good Criticism on the other hand, is actually Constructive because they might contain tips I found easy to work with. Reason why I said might, because not all the tips I was given didn't work well for me, and I just prefer to stick to my own method, because it works best for me. But while the comparison between criticism and likes with brussel sprouts and cookies makes sense, another comparison I think that should have been made is Bashing/Mocking and Soda. For me, I never liked Soda. It's unhealthy and can rotten your teeth, and mindless bashing and mocking can actually make me feel really discourage, and that the basher ruined something I love doing. So out and all, I like how you explained criticism in this video.

Remember to make it about the art not the artist. Also explain yourself. Saying "this is good" or "that sux" is not helpful at all. Say why it is good or why it sux. You don't need to give a mini-novel about it, just I like it because the colors work well or it sux because the pose is really off. I could go on forever. Young and new artists should expect criticism. If they want to get better they should require it. And if those critics make it personal or refuse to explain their thumbs up or down, then feel free to critic their criticism. You can do that. Just remember, do not make it personal.

I can definitely agree with the seeing points on both sides. Criticism, like you said, is healthy. It can also be very helpful, if given in the right context. See, some people call themselves 'critics', when in reality, they're simply giving out hate. However, some artists will also make this point, even if it IS helpful and they even SAY it's not meant to be held against them. And yes, some people have already had enough 'brussel sprouts' and simply want cookies. Which is why, when I criticize, I try and one, give them criticism that's helpful, and two, compliment their piece. That way, you can help them, and make them feel good :) I thank you for reading this if you did X3

So the thing is, most of the time I’m harder and more critical on myself than other people lol Like with my art or singing. I always say I suck at it and then someone will tell me it’s good and then I’m like thanks but inside I’m like no it isn’t.

This made me think of my old art teacher and what she did: There was this one boy in my course in year 12, who was a bit....well, strange(?) and who was TERRIBLE at drawing...seriously, he drew like a 6-year old. But my teacher still gave him a good grade on one of his works because she saw how he tried to shade it. It looked bad, but she praised him for the effort. And that's the thing about criticism: Don't praise them for something that looks good, *praise them for the effort they put into it.* Even if it doesn't look good, if you can see that a lot of time was put into that one particular thing, it's a great thing to give some praise on that. You can still gently criticise the other things, but do try to take note if the artist is particularily proud of something.

When I critique art on my DA account I usually use a complient sandwich method. Basically I start out by leveling the field, telling them that I am not a professional so my critique should be taken with a grain of salt, this makes it feel a lot less harsh as it seems like a peer offering advice and not a critic talking down to you. Then I tell them what I like about the piece and think they should keep doing, followed by a "but" and some critique pointing out what they could do better and how to do so. I usually include a video or two that give examples of how to improve their art. After that I compliment the artwork some more, telling them what I think about the overall concept of the piece and execution. After that I give them a rating out of five, trying to be as reasonable and fair without contradicting my prior critique. I think it's very important not just to say what they are doing well or badly, but try to give them an equal mix of both, so I usually do a little bit of complimenting, double the amoun of critique, then a little bit of complimenting, so they can walk away from the critique without feeling like their pride has been taken from them. Too often on DA do I see someone simply saying "It's looks so good! Wow! 5 stars!" or "It's not that great, 2 stars" without trying to actually help the artist. *Tl:Dr, try to critique based on both negative and positive feedback for optimal helpfulness!*

I told someone something in their anatomy that is off, and I find a lot in their work. I put it bluntly and said “I think that (the problem area) is a little (problem with the problem area)” . They excused it as a “style”. I looked up the style and it doesn’t look like their style at all. They also said that some artist does it too (but they make it work with their softer, childlike style). The artist I call out has more of a mature and detailed style (mature meaning not advanced but not cute and innocent, I should say “sexy?” Idk). I say that it works for them and not quite for you. They say “But they draw big boobs, so it’s not like a child.” I explain it’s more of a bubbly innocent style (aka childlike) and that theirs is mature. They say back “it’s not an adult character more of a teen” I then explain that mature doesn’t mean adult. They say back “well I’m not going to respond because you only complain and idc about your opinion.”

A good way to cook brussel sprouts is roasting them in the oven with raisins/craisins and onions (the onions will become caramelized and they, combined with the raisins, will sweeten the brussel sprouts).

criticism is an important part of improving, you dont get better unless you learn from your mistakes and sometimes you dont always see all of your mistakes, it should always be constructive, for example, instead of saying your art is bad, specify, for example the neck is a bit too thick and the head is too large compared to the rest of the body, things that a person can legitimatly look at and go oh yeah I can now see how I can fix this for next time, and you get better as an artist which is what every artist wants

I've been drawing for about 4 1/2 years now, and for about 3 years of that, I NEVER EVER got ANY criticism. And it saddens me that nobody even tried. I dont recall any comments on my art. Which absolutely didn't help me. My art style was the same, ugly, amateur for too long type style. The biggest Sue fest you could find. It was the definition of deviantarts worst in a pile. A beginning artist should always get criticism, I wish I got it. It would help others get where they wanna be sooner with lotsa happiness and pride. Its always nice to get at least one critique. I'm currently 12 and I still crave some sproutsssss Gimmie more

As an artist we must be sensitive rule number 1 , must be polite rule number 2 , must be find solutions ( screaming shouting pressure make ur brain shutdown) rule number 3, when you don't feel pressure burden ur brain start working normally and you find something creative rule number 4, because as an artist, art means imagination & creativity big company like google facebook etc understood this thing that's why they giving most outstanding atmosphere in their office and they care each other. Criticism is good but not in arts .. because in arts no one is senior or junior , because creativity and imagination don't need any age. Just believe in ur self may be one day you will create something which no one ever think before . All the best :)

I like brussle sprouts, but you gotta roast the hell outta them lol it takes away some of their bitterness, I also really like them when I am making a sautéed slaw with other vegitables for something like a fried fish wrap, brussle sprouts and fish go together really well and you can reduce the bitterness in the sprouts more by adding sweeter things such as bell peppers or caramlized onions to the slaw. Recipe for a fried fish wrap: 2 fried fish fillets Creamy Caesar salad dressing Brussle sprouts About 1/2 a single bell peppers worth of green, red, yellow, orange bell peppers Peeled carrot Burrito sized tortilla Bake the fried fish, in a mid-large size pan, lightly coat with oil on mid-high heat, I prefer the garlic olive oil you get at Trader Joe’s. Take brussle sprouts and cut the end off, then cut in half so you can lay the sprout flat, chop sprouts and put in pan, stirring occasionally. Once they start to become soft, cut strips of bell pepper and add to the pan. Take a carrot peeler and peel layers of carrot into the pan. Continue stirring until the brussle sprouts become a deep emerald color. Lay tortilla flat and add Caesar salad dressing. Lay the fried fish fillets with the wide end facing outside the tortilla. Top with the vegetable mixture. Wrap, enjoy.

I think some young artists can be open for criticism if they're okay with that or need it in case. Us as artists should do our best to help others give constructive critiques without having to come off as harsh or disrespectful towards their artwork. 😊👌🏻

When I was 10 and I was on a cruise there was a board that anyone could draw on so I drew a wolf and though it was awesome! I put “please don’t wreck this I’m only ten” after drawing I left with my family. When I can back my drawing was scribbled over and called ugly including other people’s are that were also on the page. And the person also drew a dinosaur and said they were also ten even though they might’ve not been. I was very sad and mad but when I think back about it it was just a kid who clearly couldnt handle me master piece 😂

Heyyyy so you were asking for some brussel sprouts! Though this is quite an old video pff. You've most likely improved since! Sooo, *for this* video- as for the positive, you seem to have a very steady hand, which is only obtained by lots of training! So very good job on that! As for the color palette.. it seems kinda flat? I would personally love to see a few more colors in the skin tone and hair! Not like as in colors that pop, but pastel-y. It would also be very cool if you tried keeping away from the black in the line art! Try some browns and dark purples, depending on where you're drawing! Anyway, that was my brussel sprouts with a bit of sprinkled sugar for ya. I hope it can come into use! Have a good day!

I know this video is super old, but I feel the most important and helpful criticism is constructive criticism. And it's really important to point out that hate ≠ criticism. It's very unfortunate that there are people who believe this. "It's good, but you could work on improving your perspective (or whatever) can be considered criticism, but it's not exactly constructive. It doesn't point out how the person can improve their perspective or point them to any material that could teach them one, two, or three point perspective. Constructive criticism is actually informative and helpful to people on so many levels. 🙏

I believe criticism is important because it helps a person get better, like in band. When I played trumpet in 6th grade band I held my had position wrong so my fingers acked so I was told how to do it right. Criticism is important to an artist growth, a person's anatomy might be off so they may get criticism about it. Yes its not fun but its helpful, but it doesn't mean a person should be scoled. Criticism is to help not put them down 💚

I think they should, as long as it's not too harsh. Like advice, such as: *Maybe you should change this color so it matches with this color!* OR: *Maybe you could change this a bit, so it kind of matches with the backstory!* Don't sugarcoat it. As they get more familiar with the page or art, give them a little harsher and more direct.
