Having a voice on the internet is not like screaming into a void. It's like screaming into a crowd that's way over the room capacity where some people are pushing and shoving; some are robots, some have megaphones, some have surround sound microphones, and some just have a new thing that megaphone/microphones take interest in.

another tip: do some “draw this in your style” stuff!! some artists will re post the art to their story, and if they have a somewhat large following, people will see your art and if they like it they’ll even give you a follow :) ((ONLY re draw art if it’s a draw this in your style post, if it isn’t one, never do that))

Giulia R25 haha, try doing it with semi popular acc, one without too many followings so they still have a chance to see your art and one without too little do there’s more people who will see it. like between 10-50k followers (make sure to check if there’s a deadline, and it’s better to submit it sooner than later)

So for the fanart part. I’ve seen people draw fanart for this one show. When the artist doesn’t draw fanart, they usually have 1k likes instead of 4k likes dorm the fanart they post. When the artist stops drawing fanart, they just get less then 1k likes and they just lose followers. It’s really upsetting for the artist since not many people follow them for their art, instead, people follow for fanart and not want to follow for their original art.
@reenissketchbook5575 жыл бұрын

NANDU 7865 posts gain traction differently based on time posted(this is just one of the factors, of course having likable content is important too). This varies by website and applies most heavily towards Instagram and Reddit. Basically, if you post the same thing twice, changing only the time posted, you’re likely to get two different results(the one posted at a bad time may have 0 chance of blowing up, even if it’s good). Why timezone matters is that some people just happen to live in an area where peak posting times coincide with times they’d normally post anyway, while other people may have to post at 4 in the morning(in their timezone) to hit that peak time.

I think people misunderstand the fanart thing. I generally don't do any type of fanart, I'm making my own comic so thats what I draw. My art isnt doing very well at the moment so I was told to do fanart. Here's the thing. A year ago I was drawing manga only, I managed to get a couple thousand ppls attention with it, then I changed my artstyle completely, the views and subs are down now. Heres what you should do, draw a little bit of fanart here and there, for example, when you watch batman and feel like drawing batman then draw batman. But you shouldn't only just draw batman and then one day start drawing original stuff. You should have 9/10 original posts and 1/10 fanart. That way people can still get drawn in and relate to your love for supernatural, but they will still stay, if they do stay, for ALL the art because it wouldnt be worth it just for that one supernatural drawing. ;)
@seigeengine6 жыл бұрын
I feel like this should be obvious. You don't want people to think you're a fan art page/channel/artist when you're trying to focus on your original art. It'd be like a business that blew all it's resources on ads without developing a good product.

Madlyn Ziemer me personally, I'm autistic, so I obsess over certain things intensely for long whiles. So, for months I'll be drawing fanart and have no interest in Ocs, then for months I'll obsess over my OCs and draw them for months. I never say I'm a fanart blog or an oc blog, just that I draw whatever I feel like drawing. If I wanna draw five fanarts and two Ocs or no fanart and 20 Ocs, it's just what I do. I mean my art is good, I know it is(I'm not being narcissistic, I just don't put myself and my art down anymore and all that jazz)...but obviously the fanart always does way better. I've kinda accepted it right now that my followers are split with some liking only my fanart and some liking only my oc art and a very rare few who love all of it :/

Sadly on deviantart the good art gets overridden by fetish p*rn and that kind of stuff. Nobody even sees my art, but that doesn't stop me from improving I guess Keep up the good work my fellow artists, you deserve to be noticed one day❤

That's all too often the case with the "browse newest" page. Have you tried submitting your art to groups? They're a good way to get yourself noticed, since they show your art to people who are specifically looking for the kind of content the group showcases. Keep working hard, fellow artist!

ZaagaWaffl :3 I like Instagram more than deviantart because deviantart is specifically made for art but that means it’s drowning in art. I think it makes it harder for your art to get noticed because there’s just so much of it. On instagram there’s an art community and it’s not small but it’s not enormous like deviantart. I like the layout of ig as well I think you should try it out

I use an art Amino and that’s where I usually post art. I personally think it’s better than posting on Deviant art, instagram, etc. Your art gets noticed more easily and people might even give you some constructive criticism on how you can improve. But that’s just my opinion, thought it might be helpful since you said your art doesn’t really get noticed on Deviant Art. ^_^
@Sophia-qn5qg5 жыл бұрын
1:57 that was what I thought. I was like 13 when I started practising and practising how to make my art more and more realistic because I felt like only then it could actually be good enough for instagram. I gained followers and was happy when I got likes and ashamed of my art when it didn't get likes. The problem was that I didn't have fun creating art anymore. I had like 150 insta followers and I felt like I had to draw realistic stuff and just had to draw it well enough and then I'd gain followers. So I really lost all the fun and creativity and over time also stopped creating art. One day, I discovered your KZbin channel and other artists like Kasey Golden and realised art does not have to look realistic to be good. That discovery motivated me immensely and I started drawing again. This time, I didn't draw realistically but more cartoonish. I experimented around, got a tablet, tried to find my style and stuff. When I posted something for the first time since a couple of months I was pretty excited to show off my new art. It was the first digital art I had posted. It rarely got any likes. I kinda understood though because it wasn't good at all. I continued posting art but I kept getting less and less likes. The people who followed me had followed me for realism, not some mediocre cartoonish art. I stopped posting my art and decided that from now on I'm only going to create art for myself until I am completely happy with the way I draw. I'm doing that right now, still haven't found my style but I'm learning. Once I feel like I'm ready, I'm gonna create a new account one which I will post my own, original art. I don't think anyone read this but it felt good to write my journey down lol

I make art for Instagram as well, the reason my art isn’t good is because I’m just lacking motivation, and that’s because I don’t have the skill I wish I would have, and when I do have motivation, I either start drawing, and it just keeps going wrong and I give up, or I’ll start making a piece that I like, but then I’ll start rushing through it because I’m like “this is taking me forever, I’m so tired of it, but I need it ‘finished’” and it never really gets finished at all. It just looks rushed because I think I’m taking too long with my art. The main thing that’s stopping my from making art though is anatomy- like I’ll have this epic pose in mind, and then I’ll draw it out which could take me hours, and then I’m done with it and then whatever I’m drawing looks deformed- Hhhhh

I recently just quitted all of my social media to focus on my art. Because like you said. When you're not "popular" you usually take it on yourself and how you draw. Im taking it slow, but it's good to rediscover why i love drawing so much and what i want to share with my style :D Again thank you for all of your great tips, i'll probably be going back on social medias in maybe a year. But before that i want to learn to appreciate my art and what i like about it. :)

I feel like I should start doing the same. I’ve been frustrated as of late, comparing myself to other artists and how much fame they get. It’s been really messing me up. I’ve had thoughts about abandoning my Instagram account and starting fresh with a new one. Maybe I should quit for a while, focus on stuff like the comic series I’ve been wanting to make or animations ideas I’ve been holding back. My version: #1 Have an enjoyable personality #2 Post art as much as possible to make opportunities to be seen #3 Draw things you like and not care about popularity Popularity isn't a formula. It just comes to you due to people enjoying your content and sharing it with their friends.
@seigeengine6 жыл бұрын
Tell that to all the businesses that exist entirely because they consistently make things popular. #1 Be yourself. You don't have to get most people to like you, you can get a few people to love you and you'll be solid. #2 You have finite time to produce work. Grinding away won't matter if nobody sees it. Spend time to try to maximize the visibility of your work to get the most out of your time. #3 Know what you want, and do what is requires to get there. You don't have to compromise your values, but if you want to get successful, just doing whatever you want isn't a very sound strategy for most.

Popularity often reflects the general taste not quality...look at the fast food chains. Getting your art and maybe youtube videos out is kind of like playing poker. If you're playing and all you do is place all of the cards you have down because you think that if you're just lucky you'll win, you're definitely going to lose and not get discovered. But if you've studied all the rules, techniques, and other experiences, you'll more likely win the round and get discovered more (some luck is still involved, but you'll more likely win).
@LavenderTowne6 жыл бұрын

@cliftut6 жыл бұрын
seigeengine has a point on one level, but the analogy works in that poker has a strong random component as well as a skill component, plus social factors and strategies. Also, what poker is "about" for you will depend on who you are and how you approach the table, though different activities do tend to attract different types of people. Not all competition is antagonistic. Sometimes it is constructive.

Truuue... I've thought about this a lot but it's also kind of sad how people/audience only want to follow a page/blog that has only the artist's art... and then unfollow/get disinterested whenever the artist posts about their life or has an update it's like they hate seeing the artist is a real person and all they want is content content content. That's the only thing that's upsetting.
@drililali6 жыл бұрын
remainingembers Yeah it's kinda sad but for example on tumblr I can't stand when my dash is full of somebody's shitposts and it shuts out otger artists too bc it's too much and frequent.
@remainingembers6 жыл бұрын
yeah but i dont mean artists posting shitposts or silly stuff, more like one personal-ish post or smth that's not Cute Fanart that everyone flocks to. It's like anything that has more to do with the artist makes people unfollow or care less bc sometimes they dont see artists as people you know what I mean?
@lengarion6 жыл бұрын
remainingembers I think you have the wrong idea of why people follow artists online. Most of the time, what people care about is just the art. It's rare that an artist online seems interesting enough that one would want to know about non art related topics, too. I think whether or not your audience cares about your private life is something you need to test out carefully and slowly. People aren't unfeeling, but the internet is big, and time is sparse, and therecs a big difference between a casual follower and a huge fan.
@remainingembers6 жыл бұрын
Maybe so for very professional artists who have dedicated places for their artwork, I'm not so much talking about that than just general artists and ones who do their work for hobby more than for actual commission or for a field. Regardless of who and where, treating artists or any creator like faceless machines only there to give content of whatever they posted once is generally hurtful imo. I'm talking people unfollowing for an artist answering one single question or not posting a few days due to school, or just how it feels as an artist posting when you only get interaction from others when you post some goofy meme art, but not on anything else or anything meaningful in your life yanno.
@iodine11696 жыл бұрын
Is that surprising? People are rarely interested in the artist's life since it is irrelevant to them. Some artists are also very obnoxious about this, such as using their pages as a soapbox for their personal (usually financial) issues. I don't think people mind the occasional non-art update, but if it becomes too frequent or preachy there is no reason to continue following said artist.

Lack of appealing to audiences(No tags, no consideration for thumbnails and titles), only doing what they enjoy/putting the same or more amount into things that they like but are unpopular, and others are the reasons why. Audiences need talent but the Internet needs a marketing strategy to show your work to audiences. And God forbid the platforms help, they only care about promoting what gets the most likes so that way there's a bigger chance other people will like it and spend more time on their platform looking at it, that's why luck is involved

When your famous like that a lot of people depend and expect you to make the same same kind of content at a certain time and complain if it's different of if it's not uploaded on time. Also when your famous you never get good criticism and that's what happened to people like Allimations and Nawnii. @seigeengine6 жыл бұрын
No worries man, I can help you out: Nobody depends on anybody to make art unless there's money involved. Nobody will seriously be affected if a famous artist takes a little longer between releasing work. It's easy to get good criticism: just don't rely on the general audience to be your source of it. Preferably get the opinions of other artists. Even when you're not successful, you have to take any criticism with a tub of salt. Most criticism is bad. Even relatively small artists can have a few sycophants. +ItistheFrenchiestFry This. In literally everything. Some of the best advice for this from my experience is to step back and look at your work from a distance... including literally. We make things under a microscope almost, so we're hyper-conscious of every flaw, so taking a step or five back can really help appreciate the piece as a whole rather than letting us zoom in on the faults.

Man when I was in my early high school days my art was totally freaking garbage and somehow I gained a ton of popularity- the anatomy was absolutely atrocious, the colours were all over he place, there just wasn’t much good about it at all. Once I started improving and my art was actually decent, it completely dried up and I have never been able to get that back

As a kid I used to like cringe things and I had a lot of time to support artists who drew cringe. As an adult I don't have time to even answer my friends? If you want to be popular your art should be appealing to people from 11-19 because those people have more time to appreciate your art. I hope that you get what I mean

It's kind of like the "pretty" and "ugly" people thing on social media. People will hype the "ugly" people up because they don't see them as competition. People will ignore or discourage "pretty" people because they see them as competition or they get jealous. It's not 100% the same for art, but it's pretty similar in my opinion. also please note i put quotation marks because i dont think those labels really define anyone 🥲

I think the takeaway should be to consider fan art like it's advertising. It's not your product, it's how you get people to look at your product. Of course more people are going to see an ad than follow through and check out where it goes.

Anyway what I was going to say about fanart is that with tagging systems and stuff it's a lot easier to get your art out there when you're putting it in a tag thats popular but not totally saturated ([insert fandom]fanart vs art for example) and original art is a lot harder to tag with those sorts of things, since generic tags are always saturated and specific tags for original stuff are not going to be frequently searched, popular artists also tend to have an easier time getting original stuff noticed simply because social media algorithms tend to notice and promote accounts that already have more followers because those algorithms tend to rely on popularity, so if your original stuff isn't getting noticed as much its probably just because you havent been around for long enough, you just have to keep at it and you'll get there

I kinda disagree with the fanart part, since that usually only attracts people to follow you for that exact fandom. I used to draw fanart for a fandom i was in and got quite alot of followers from it. however when i stopped, i had a massive decline in followers. and now its really annoying whenever i get a follow from someone who literally only likes and starts following for the fanart. and it happens way way more than getting people from the fanart to be interested in my original work. so i genuinely dont recommend that
@Skykristal6 жыл бұрын
NegativeAnswer I agree to this 100% I have the exact same problems. People only care about the one or two fanart you did but they ignore everything else. I used to draw a lot Pokémon art and other things and these have like 100-300 favs on my Deviantart while my original art gets not even 50 sometimes and 1-2 comments. I mean that's still not less but it's a huge difference. I think it's hard to grow with original art in general. It's kinda sad honestly. I personally think original art is way cooler than "unoriginal" art. Aka fanart. But most people don't seem to be interested

Maybe try not doing so much fan art of one specific thing. You don't want to build an audience looking for one thing, you want to draw them in, and hook them on your content as a whole. If you have a bunch of work of one thing though, they're going to see that, and then sub for that... don't give them the impression that's what you're offering.

As an artist it's even harder to earn people's respect for their art. I had a phase where I just drew "how to train your dragon" art and got over 20+ likes (I am a rather small account) 👀 and I felt confident that people like my art, so I finally got out of the phase and just started of doing my own personal art and just got like 10+ likes. I am still doing fanart sometimes, but people don’t comment, or don’t give it any attention for what I did. I know it's not that important to get the likes or earn followers, but I would love if somebody would just criticize my art in an informative way so I can improve easier... ~Doing art is hard~
@seigeengine6 жыл бұрын
Basically, building your brand as an artist is like building any other brand. People need to see your work, be compelled to actually follow through on looking at it, and then be sold on converting them into an audience member... if any of those stages aren't working well, you will fail to build an audience. So ask yourself: 1. How are people going to see my art for the first time? How can I get my work in front of more interested eyes? The fan art comment falls in here. 2. How can I make my art draw in those people to want to take a closer look? What's going to compel people to click through? The thumbnail comment falls in here. 3. How can I make my work good enough that people are going to be compelled to commit themselves to seeing more of your work instead of just clicking away and forgetting you? This is also an area where fan art can grab ahold of existing emotions in the viewer. It's also where your actual skill as an artist comes into play.
@jamesdo73876 жыл бұрын
seigeengine you’re right. It’s literally marketing like a company would market a product. A lot of people don’t think about it in that sense. They think, here’s my art, I like it, they should too. In reality it’s finding a demographic to attract and analyzing how your product or service (artwork) will provide what they want. Then it’s all about finding ways to place the art in front of them. Most get lucky and do it on accident, but the hugely successful have these things in mind when creating their artwork.

Com'on be honest. Everyone is doing fanart.... only few get really noticed, most never get a really huge following. There are too many great fanartists already that struggle for a little bit of attention. Fans of fanart only come for the fanart, as soon as you start presenting original ideas, they're gone and you're often back to square one. Fanart fans are a bubble.
@Leongon6 жыл бұрын
Variety let's play channel versus League of Legends channel. If you teach your audience you're doing fanart, just stick to that and shove them your original work in very small doses. If you teach them you'll draw whatever the heck you want, they'll know they are in for original surprises and the fanart will be the rare candy. Just be consistent with one, instead of inconsistent with both.

You also forgot to mention another thing that popularity brings. Lots of PMs, lots and lots and lots of people who will just want to message you because they are such a huge fan. This can be good and bad. The good is you might make a friend amongst a few. Bad because people might try using you as a crutch to get more popular themselves. Some cling and expect you to be their best friend. And it just depends on the person sometimes you might end up disabling PMs because you just don't want the drama that comes with it. Or you could attempt to talk to all of them to be nice and kind to all of these people who admire you. It can get tiring trying to appease literally hundreds of people on a daily basis and it honestly depends HOW popular you got. I personally love being in a fresh new community where no one knows who I am because it feels easier to interact with people in more public settings and I can try again to know what it feels like to start at the bottom again and work my way up. I'm only known in one very specific fandom, so when I go to a new fandom or community it's a breath of fresh air to jump into things and play that growth game all over again.
