Being a part of the EU is a lot o additional regulations and acceptance for the fact that there is a law above the single country level, but it also gives a lot of benefits, like a free access to the market with 700 million consumers, better food and freedom to move inside the EU and much more. EU membership, you can leave behind (like the UK did). US membership, you can never get rid of (see 1860s Civil War).
@Yankeedoodle-x89w7 күн бұрын
There's a big difference between a Union of independent nations that had existed for thousands of years before that union and a union of states which were never meant to act on as independent nations (except for Hawaii, which is the only exception, and also wasn't a territory during the Civil War). If Canada were annexed (and that's a big if), then it would be given the choice to become a state or a territory like Puerto Rico (votes to become a state took place in Alaska and Hawaii). It is unlikely that Canada would be forced into statehood, as no other territory had been before. Also, the Civil War wasn't fought over secession. It was fought because the CSA began seizing federal property which they had no claim to (it being in their land is not a claim to it. The US has military bases in Germany, but I doubt Germany would ever try and seize them for the reasons the CSA was seizing US property). Most in the north thought the south would come crawling back, like a teenager after a phase. Few thought they would start attacking federal property.
@epaminon61966 күн бұрын
@Yankeedoodle-x89w So... if the CSA had ejected all US federal property, they would have been able to leave the union in peace?
@Yankeedoodle-x89w6 күн бұрын
@@epaminon6196 It's hard to say. Like I said, the individual states were not made to function separate from the federal government. They were made specifically to exist as a united entity. Many northerners believed the union should be preserved no matter what. However, if the CSA was peaceful in their secession, they may have been successful. Though, it's unlikely they would have been able to remain out of the union permanently, due to the fact that their economic system was slowly becoming obsolete, and they were way behind on industrializing. There were other disadvantages, but that's the most important one.
@epaminon61966 күн бұрын
@@Yankeedoodle-x89w Interesting take on the matter. I'd argue that the Southern states would have fallen behind the Northern states economically if they had remained independent. Their less industrialized economic system would have set them up for more of a Mexican-style development. But their citizens would have remained free and without oppressive Northern restrictions on their property rights.

Actually, as a European I find this a very good idea. Canada has natural resources, Europe has the market and the consumers. Donald would become mad. 😂

As a European, I am actually not against including Australia, New Zealand and Canada as a minor member in the EU, maybe as trade partners and some say in the government etc, but in an plausible federation maybe not. We’ll see
@rickmoore37308 күн бұрын
As a Canadian, I think that would be a more doable scenario. Otherwise the EU would become a cumbersome mechanism. A CANZAC / EU partnership would be a good mix.

We would not want to be a "minor" member but an equal member. There should be no minor members!!!

@@DavidWootton-yd5ws I think he meant that instead of being a EU member, Canada would have a "special agreement" the same kind the EU has with countries such as Norway, Switzerland, Iceland.

@ of course I don’t mean like something that’s under the European states. I want it to be treated equally as we all share love for democracy and a caring world, but what I meant is that I think it is more resonnable that the European countries first make a federation if it’s to happen, with a EU continuing with the canzuk and the EF. Eventually I won’t mind letting you guys being part of a federation

@@DavidWootton-yd5ws well but the "equal" members are suposed to someday merge into one nation.....while i have nothing agaisnt canada joining that i doubt its currently the rigth step to take from the candaian perspective :D We realy need to put an extra layer into the EU framework maybe call it European Cooperation put everything that is currently in the EU into the EC let canada join the EC and all states that are willing to actualy somebody unite can then join the even one level deeper level of the EU ...or soemthign liek that....

The only thing that makes this idea sound weird is literally the name of the union itself. It's kinda funny. The values of Canada align way more with the general western European values that are the basis of the EU, than some member states. Not that those states aren't welcome either.

Canada should deepen the relation with EU for sure, that they might have a deal similar to Norway-EU. Ppl should be able to move in between Canada and EU freely without limitation for living or working.
