One Metre Campaign: Should cyclists be on the road?

When we talk about cycling, the replies from motorists aren't exactly passing the vibe check, so we took to the streets to find out what #yorkregion knows about the laws around cyclist safety.

Too bad cyclists just do what they want, don't require a license or insurance and not to mention are the sole reason why there is so much hate between drivers and cyclists. The concept of sharing the road cannot apply to someone that doesn't understand the rules of the road, therefore its actually silly to allow these people to be on the road endangering everyone including themselves. Instead, we can just pretend like what I'm saying doesn't matter and police the citizens when something happens. Forget about forward thinking or taking responsibility.

They should not be on roads because a human on a 30lbs bicycle is incompatible with people in multi-ton vehicles. Cars are bigger, heavier, faster, and will absolutely kill a cyclist or any other pedestrian in a collision. Roads are dangerous enough for cars, you can't blame people on bicycles for not wanting to ride with them. Cyclists should absolutely have their own lanes, or a wide mixed use path for all pedestrians. Bicycles being considered the same as a car is ridiculous. Anyone can ride a bike, they're safe, they're slow enough, light enough, and maneuverable enough that traffic signals are not necessary. No one will die in the event of a collision between two cycles or a cycle and a person on foot. It is the responsibility of any person on a bike to ride responsibly and be aware of their surroundings. You should not be riding top speed in pedestrian heavy areas, and it's not wise to weave between cars or be generally unpredictable around drivers. Drivers are bad, they can't even follow the speed limit, you need to be predictable and signal when turning, always look both ways when going through an intersection, common sense. However, you don't need to stop at stop signs if there are no cars waiting to cross your path. Since you're slower and have fewer blind spots, you have more reaction time and a better view of your surroundings. Cycling should be encouraged, not seen as a nuisance as we're taught in car dependent societies. Cars are the problem. Bicycle infrastructure would induce cycling, which would reduce car traffic, and make our towns quieter, safer, healthier, and more welcoming to everyone.

I agree, however on roads that are north of Major MacKenzie that run along the farm lands (two lane roads) should they be occupying the entire lane slowing down all traffic or moving over to allow the traffic by when there is space for them to do so? That's where the frustration is with cyclist.
