Should Horse Hair Sporrans for Civilians Come Back?

Yes Definitely, I lost my horse in march as a tribute I am getting a custom horsehair sporran made from her tailhair to keep her with me, so YES! :)

I love horsehair sporrans. They make a nice statement with the kilt, and definitely draw more questions. Infact... I just took a standard white sporran, broke it down, re-dyed the the white, to a neat gradient brown to cream. I used two of the three sets of the "swinging six" tassels to replace the original to long black tassels. I cut a new apron out of brown leather, and put a new cantle on it. You would never know it was the same sporran. I think it turned out beautifully.

I have a goat hair sporran that I love, but the cantle makes it a bit more of a semi-formal to formal style sporran. If I had one with a mostly leather cantle similar to the Balmoral Castle Ghillie style sporran, I would rock that at a highland games no questions asked.

I had a Goat hair sporran made by MM that is all leather just so I could wear it during the day . And yes....they are expensive . Definitely prefer goat hair to horse hair .

I think you're taking "daily wear" to literally. By daily wear, I think this person means wear on less formal occasions. As an example, I have one and I like to wear it to festivals and events, but not necessarily with "formal" clothing.

My late husband drummed for a kilty unit. Horsehair was a PITA to care for. (And all furry sporrans are kinda pubic.)

Run to your suppliers and get a boat load of the Santa Claus sporrans (at 5:58) but without the police badge. Produce 'em cheaply enough to wear for that Christmas party, and they will sell! (Don't try to explain to the grandkids where the beard came from.)

I’ve made 2 sporrans, and fronted them with raccoon on one, beaver on the other. These are relatively short furs, so care doesn’t seem to be an issue. I left the rest of the sporrans leather. I like them, and I like wearing them. I actually trapped the animals used, so I felt good utilizing some of fruits of my labor.

I wanted a furry sporran for formal occasions; Hogmany and Burn's Night, but being neither Military or Law Enforcement, sought a non-horse hair option. I found one on Etsy that had curly hair, I think it was from an Alpaca or Goat. Strangely it had a Day Wear Cantle. I Bought a Silver cantle and swapped it in. I wear it at formal occasions and always get comments, but no one thinks I'm military. Everybody here in the U.S. says it looks like a Dee Snider Hair Sporran.

They look great but I can't see one for everyday use. But if you had a velco attachment, you could have monofilament for everyday and horse or goat hair for sprcial occassions.

Another problem I believe with with hair sporrans is that they can have either no pocket ((military?) or a smaller pocket than normal so be less useful. Is this correct? In the UK I have seen second hand ones advertised - tempting!😊

Simple answer? No. Form follows function, so I see no reason to complicate matters when it comes to wearing a pouch. Basic waterproof leather is absolutely sufficient - but with a certain amount of decorative features, of course :D

I think Horse/Goat Hair sporrans are most appropriate with nicer day wear and evening wear. That said, if you choose to wear more formal day wear daily, and are prepared to care for your kit accordingly, enjoy. Otherwise, I would stick to regular leather or fur sporrans as appropriate. Just me.

let's be purely honest, I want both the horsehair sporran with the long twin tassels, and the goat hair sporran with the triple tassel. i also want the English full mask badger sporran, and a North American Fox full mask sporran. All of which I would love to be as Victorian as possible. now if only I had the disposable income to make this happen.

NO! Not velcro. Velcro eventually wears out. Snaps wound be a better choice. Thay having been said, I would not want one. I appreciate them for nostalgia but think their impractical for most folks.
