OK sooo... routine embalming is a two stage process comprised of arterial and cavity embalming. During arterial fluid is injected into the body using the embalming machine. A metal injection tube is inserted into an artery (typically carotid) and attached to the embalming machine via tubing. At the same time, a metal drain tube is placed in a vein (typically jugular) to allow blood to flow out as fluid is pumped in. The embalming machine pumps fluid into the body, it does not suck. The force of the fluid being pushed in is what forces the blood out. The metal drain tube usually has a bit of tubing attached to direct the blood flow away from the body. There would also be fresh water running down the table at this point to keep everything moving to the sink drain. During cavity embalming, a trocar (the long instrument seen at 6:32) is attached via tube to the hydro aspirator (around 6:47 look in the upper right of the sink- you'll see a metal tube attached to a faucet - that's the hydro aspirator. It uses water to create suction.) The trocar is then inserted into the body two inches above the navel and two inches to the right. The trocar is used to pierce and aspirate fluid from the organs of the thoracic and abdominal cavities. (Think liposuction-type motions.) The trocar is then disconnected from the hydro aspirator and connected to a bottle of cavity fluid. (Cavity fluid is a MUCH stronger preservative than arterial embalming fluid and it's used "straight" (no water dilution). Using simple gravity injection, the trocar is then used to distribute the cavity fluid throughout the previously aspirated cavities. Caveat: I'm describing a simple/routine embalming of an unautopsied body with no additional complications. And don't forget all of the other work such as washing/disinfection, setting features, restoration (if req'd), cosmetics, hair styling, dressing/casketing, etc. Embalming is a process that is customized for each decedent to provide the best result. The answer to most questions about the embalming process is "well... it depends..." because every body is unique. Hope this helps clarify some of what you saw in the video. What a magnificent vintage prep room tho. Great video thank you for posting!

These are not prehistoric embalming instruments and there is nothing Gross! It is for the final Disposition of a Human being that was loved by someone! Utilize you tube and find the Names and Purposes of these instruments and tubing. Research: scalpels, Forceps(they are not Sissors!!) , Aneurism Hooks , Bone separators , Eye caps ,{ Needle injectors, curved needles and Ligature...used for Mouth Closure. The Terrifying sword like instrument is a Trocar : used to Vacum and embalm the Tummy region. Those that decide to,become Funeral Directors and Embalmers and Grave Diggers : are accepting to be the Last Professionals in someone's life to give them Life Closure. For those of you that find this Gross, cease the childishness and Shinanigans!! Every Human being is going to die!!!!! And Unless there are Human beings that Undertake the task of sending (You !) Former funeral director here... the lift we never used to transfer to the embalming table but to transfer into the casket since the decedent has to go over and down. In reference to the cremains you'd be surprised how many families don't want them, are contacted numerous times and don't pick them up. It's sad but very likely in a lot of these cases. Being so much later there may be other family members that want them now but legally after the next of kin is the only one that can claim them so other family members probably assume they did. I'm not sure what if any legalities would have to be considered now.

My aunt’s body got caught up in a family feud between brothers. She ended up in limbo at a funeral home, embalmed but no one to pay for it or remaining funeral costs. It broke my heart. So I offered to have her cremated and pay for it as well as the cost of the embalming. Along the way I became next of kin. I picked her up and delivered her to the cemetery. That part had been prepaid. One brother ended up reimbursing me. Sad, sad story. I still think of my last ride with my aunt. She was such a giving, kind person.

Two Years Ago, I lost my Male Best Friend to cancer ( He had at least 3 different kinds) He was cremated, His remains was put into a Medically Sealed urn, and put into a Locked up room, The person He appointed as His executer didn't have the money to pick up His remains, Here in The Keystone State after two Years the Funeral Home will scatter the remains around an Oak Tree, or some place serene, I have never known a Funeral Home to keep the remains and especially not locked up in a room in something. I know this for a Fact.

The instrument on that embalming table is not a scissor but an artery clamp. The drain cavity of the sink may have an aspirator to aspirate blood and body fluids. The long instruments are trocars. Dodge makes a wide variety of embalming fluids and its pumps, as did Professional made its pumps with the white bodies. The royal blue "blanket" you called is a cot cover.

What happens to these funeral homes. Are they for sale? My Grandfather who has passed, was a Funeral Director 60 years ago. He had 3 funeral homes which were impeccably maintained. He was well respected for his professionalism, kindness and caring nature in all the communities he proudly served and throughout Kansas. Unfortunately, my Grandmother was forced to sell the funeral homes at his passing. Consequently, they all lost their market share he had built up during his professional career.

Heated on the stove, used to iron. I use one as a door stop now! The (dog tags) key rings hold small amounts of ashes. If you turn that ring knob, it opens. This is a unfortunate way of life and death. Family's have people creamtated and never come back to claim the ashes. There have been a couple of funeral home that have ashes of people from the 1950s it is not the funeral homes fault. And they themselves can not get rid of the ashes themselves that is left in the family's hands. It is a catch in the law. So the funeral home has to hold on to them. There was a funeral home on youtube that. Had the ashes of over 200 people family's do not come back for the ashes so it leaves the funeral home between a rock and a hard place. They need laws to address this issue
