Should I go to dental or medical school? Comparing the two, from someone who went to both

Just started dentistry after 2 years of medicine. For me med school was just too competitive and stressfull with all the requiremts to enroll in your favorite specialism and then to have endless nightshifts... Really happy I've made that choice.

@@MALI-sm7zm Haha, almost forgot I made this comment 3 years ago. Great question btw. I'm now in my 4th year of dental school and I love it! Still doubting if I might still finish medicine after dental school to become a maxillofacial surgeon as I want to do larger things than the mouth. However, I discovered how many things are already in dentistry and how much you can do after dental school and that on every sub-division in dentistry like periodontics, implants, endodontics, crowns and many more you can expand and specialise yourself. So you can do a lot of things as a dentist and the work hours and independence as a dentist is great. If you want to see more what dentist do, I would recommend the channel 'Dental minute with Steven Cutbirth' and you see how much you can do in dentistry. In short, if you want to communicate more with patients, do more general diseases over the body, want to be involved in big things and maybe want to do really big things and can accept hard work times and stress then medicine is for you. If you want to not be involved as much with diseases like cancer, death and other things and want a more 'straight-forward' path and a simpler work life but more fixed to one certain part of the body, dentistry is for you. I am happy with the choice I've made but that is different for everybody and everybody has different interests. I hope for you that you make the right decision!

@@sanazlol7433 omg can’t believe it’s been two years since I wrote that! If you’re unsure about dentistry or medicine you gotta think about wether you like to work with your hands and brains (dentistry) or mostly brains (medicine). Since you’re gonna be seeing patients and actually treat them it’s a bit more stressful than med school in that aspect. I have friends who are in med school and we’re in our clinical years all they do is take history and examination they don’t let the students treat patients in any kind of way while in dentistry i have my own clinic I have patients and I could deliver many treatments with the supervision of directors. Also I managed to have some free time and started a business and I’m sure if I was in med school I wouldn’t make up the time for that lol However medicine does have a wider range of specialties and perhaps better job opportunities who knows🤷🏻‍♀️

I’m in the exact same situation:( I attended medical school for two years, I had to immigrate to another country and this time i’m applying to dental because it is shorter and the lifestyle is easier but i know in my heart that i want to be a surgeon so I told myself that I will study maxillofacial surgery after dental school if i’m not satisfied with where i am. it depends what is "easier" if you are a hands on learner or if you are a book worm learner. i feel like clinic work is repetition so its getting tired physically whereas medical school is being tired but more mentally rather than physically at least the first two years. Theres a difference between being tired from assisting in surgery and being tired from studying and reading 8 hours a day. both are hard in their own way.

And also another deciding factor was that people don't like to go to the dentist and I don't want my work to be such 'dark' place. Lol

Above comment is totally right. Your hand skills can greatly improve with time and practice. Only way to get better is to go for it! Honestly, an art class would probably not hurt either. You’d be surprised at how much it can help. Especially any kind of sculpting or wood working, etc

If you're on the fence between the two, then choose Dentistry, hands-down. No residency required, come out of school making $150k+, 9-5 hours, easy job security, unlimited earning potential, etc. Medicine is also a great field, but it's a huge grind. A GP dentist has far more earning potential than a GP doctor

My name is Chayse and I am a senior at a small private University I also play D2 golf for them. Ever since I was 3 years old and my mother took me to the dentist for the first time I have been interested in teeth, to the point that my Dentist had to keep asking me to step back because I was getting in the road. I was a Bio major my freshman year but because of my university's financial issues they cut the major so starting my sophomore year I had to switch to exercise Science as that is what they told me would be the closest to my current major and still very well accepted into graduate schools. I have a 2.9-3.0 cum gpa and hopefully will be 3.2 or higher after this last semester. I still have to take micro bio and organic chem as I can not fit it in my schedule this semester so after I graduate this May I will have to go back part time. I still need to take my Dat as well probably next spring. My goal is WVU dental school as its the closest to me. My parents support me as they know I truly want to do the work but are worried about me not getting in as I'm not the best standardized test taker as well as struggling in chemistry and high level math. So honestly do you think someone in my shoes has a chance of getting into Dental school or should I start looking into other careers? Thank you.

Amongst other things, a couple that come to mind off the top of my head would be time management skills and great communication skills. You can have the best didactic knowledge or hand skills but if you have poor beside manner you're going to struggle in most situations.

Just a piece of info for those who are considering following her route. A 6 year OMFS program is not the answer for you if you want to be a physician. Although you will have a MD after your name, you will not be regarded as a physician by other physicians simply because the training of a physician, like she said in the video, takes 4 years of med school plus 2-10+ years of residency/ fellowship ( depending on how deep the rabbit hole you want to go...). A MD OMFS program will make you a dentist, a OMF surgeon with a MD title ( that is granted based on first two of med school plus a few rotation geared mainly related to surgery/OMFS). You will not have the option to choose any of the medical specialty without doing 4 years of med school again. That’s a pretty good indicator the MD title associated to a OMFS is not equivalent to a the regular MD. I personally think dentistry is awesome, and OMFS is one of the best specialties if you have what it takes. So, don’t think I’m putting her down. She has to be very competent to be accepted to a good OMFS program. You got to make up your mind and pick one before you start. There is not substitute for med school if you want to be a physician in the end. I just don’t want people to get confused.

actually, her MD degree can be a ticket for specializing in other fields of medicine. Her MD degree is also the MD degree of other Physicians. There is only one MD degree according to the LAW making her a dentist, surgeon and a medical Doctor, technically at the same time. Thanks

@@freedeworld true. My friend is an OMS with DDS, MD. He decided to specialize in Plastic Surgery after OMS residency. He did the full plastic surgery residency. He is now the head of plastic surgery department of the hospital.

Iloilo Nurses RN it’s not a matter of whether it is possible. You will be a far less competitive candidate at the end of the day. It would be a bad idea to go into OMFS with the idea of doing medicine instead of dentistry. Plus, the rules are different in the old days. There were times when a dentist anesthesiologist work side by side with physician anesthesiologist doing open heart or neuro surgeries, but it is not happening now.

@@Hugo-fd8ky For me I have 3 kids which includes 1 newborn and alot of debt and I will be 41 in a few months- so I m not going to become a dentist at 46 ....But for you your younger and if you don't have debt- go for it....But count the cost of schools which can be up to 350- 500 k ....Also consider dental hygienist which is only 2 years and gets paid well and school is at community college maybe 40 k in student loans.

You don't (or didn't when this video was filmed) know a lot about different medical specialties and it shows. It's a little embarrassing that you're sharing misinformation. FM outpatient clinic can be extremely hands on. Look up all the procedures they do. IM inpatient can also be very hands on, again, look up the procedures that are possible there. It's also insulting to say they just refer patients when they really manage so many different diseases.
