This is helpful. I did go to grad school and seeking after 8 years to possibly go to law school. It was a dream of mines; and liked how you said we romanticize this career. If I do attend, Fall of 2014, it will be 10 yrs since I completed school in 2004 when graduated as a grad student. I have been unemployed so many times with two degrees and see that legal field is suffering the same thing!

Interesting video, I do feel like 2 and 3 only really matter if the person is trying to get into a large firm. What about people who are more interested in smaller practices or even their own practice?

Is it a good idea to double major in political science and economics for law school?
@Luckboxrr8 жыл бұрын
Your major has no impact on what type of law you're going practice, unless you want to become a patent attorney, and it has no impact on what law school you will be accepted to. GPA and LSAT matter most for law schools; LSAT matters more than GPA though.
@Catzzzzz8 жыл бұрын
Law schools don't really care what you major in, unless you write a personal statement about wanting to go into IP law, in which case you need to be a STEM major because you have to take the patent bar. Law schools in 2016 care primarily about two things: your LSAT score and your GPA. Both matter immensely, but the LSAT matters even more than GPA. There are many arguments out there as to why this is bad for the profession, but it is what it is. Major in anything you want, obtain a high GPA, and study hard for the LSAT. Law schools are primarily focused on those two numbers.

I found my law school education a great investment in pragmatic terms but was very glad to have done a master's degree in philosophy and economics first because from an academic standpoint law school was not stimulating intellectually. I studied law in Switzerland where university is practically free so this makes a difference. In Switzerland all universities are of a good standard (there are not that many) and equally regarded in terms of reputation.

And I do apologize because I hate to be argumentative and waste time on KZbin but that statement was so arrogant. "I would be an amazing lawyer but I think I want to be a doctor" I recommend you really analyze why you want to practice law or medicine. Sounds like you're after the money. In reality people who possess skills to be an attorney as opposed to those practicing medicine are vastly different. Good luck with whatever you decide and realize the awesome investment you'll be making.
@TheGregoryDevine12 жыл бұрын
Haha I am a 1L and ZeroSumJ1 is absolutely correct. Haha You would be an amazing lawyer huh? What gave you that idea? Why do people group lawyers and doctors together, well its probably due to the notion they are among the most prestigious professions ...Very few people realize that they are absolutely different. Med school is much harder to get into and requires vast knowledge of biology. Law school may be easier to get into but where you go weights greatly on employment opportunities post grad
@viharsarok13 жыл бұрын
Law is an excellent example of a prestige-based profession. Most people go to Law School for the prestige that they think comes with being a lawyer rather than for the knowledge or because they're eager to work in that field. They attach prestige to something external to them (law), and therefore it's just natural that they do the same thing in recruitment: profession being equal they attach prestige to schools. Man, I'm so glad I'm not a lawyer.
@orlandocriminalteam11 жыл бұрын
I think you're correct in that many people tend to romanticize about how they perceive a lawyer should be. As you pointed out, most of the time is reading and doing paperwork. Sure, there are times in court, at least for me, but that's after a great deal of paperwork is completed.

Nice video. I went to law school and Sallie Mae owns me now...$150,000 in student loans. NOT fun, but I am employed and making extra principal payments each month. I intend to pay them off in 15 years. But it does put a hamper on getting your LIFE started!!!
@progrocker8412 жыл бұрын
You make it sound as if the only work available in law is securities and M&A at big law firms. Of course *those* jobs tie you to a desk. But lawyers working for the DA or in criminal defence, or those working in civil litigation or personal injury, spend much more time in court.

Plus, it's all about who you know, not what you know. If your resourceful, you won't need grades, because you will know someone who gets you a job. School prestige and grades are not everything. plenty ways to make $ going to bad school/bad grades.

Oh, and one more piece of advice. You should check out the "Top Law School Forum." They have all sorts of LS experts there who can answer virtually any question from the LSAT, to school choice, to what it's like to work in the industry.

I think this can be said of nurses, is it worth going to a private school to be a nurse, one has to be absolutely sure of their intentions and the realities of attending law school.

The debt is no longer worth it. I don't care what your school or major or grades. It is not worth it. If you can pay cash, maybe. However if there's debt involved, absolutely not. Way too much risk with no promise of a job. Employers are just too picky and even if you are hired they can fire you at the drop of a hat. I'm all for education but not if there's debt cause the debt ruins the degree with too much risk. Your much better off to stay out of debt and avoid all the stress. There are plenty of people who succeed in life without student loans.

Sound advice. I'd add one caveat: the standard advice for the last several years has been to go to a Top 14 law school OR go to a regional school in the exact area you desire to practice in. Simply going to a Top 100 school is NOT enough. Even schools in the 20-30 range of US News rankings have dim job statistics, with 25% of graduates unemployed a year out, and many more only employed part-time or under-employed and they cannot pay back their student loans. It truly is "T14 or Bust" in 2016.

this is by far the most realistic and helpful advice about going to law school. I did some research on what lawyers do everyday (which is a lot of reading, writing, ass kissing to become a partner, long hours of work, no personal life or time for your family, etc) and they have huge amount of debt from law school (100-150 grand) and MOST of them, who didn't go to top schools, find themselves unemployed. if law is something I MUST do, then i better go to top school n prepare to be miserable

There is a massive amount of reading in law school. You will be reading 6+ hours a day your first year. As a lawyer, you spend most of your time reading documents. So, you shouldn't go to law school.

T3 refers to the third tier of ABA-accredited law schools. Graduates from these schools will possibly experience difficulty in finding jobs. If you're referring to the top three law schools according to US News and World Reports (Harvard, Yale, Stanford), these are colloquially known as HYS. Of these, Stanford has the least prestigious reputation yet still places 90% of its graduates into bar-passage required positions. Please tell me you were trolling with your last statement.

Yay for ad hominem attacks! This is going to be an interesting dialogue. While I find that STEM degrees, both undergraduate and graduate, are more profitable than a Juris Doctor, lawyers are fully capable of earning livable salaries. Most of the anecdotes I hear from unemployed law grads are ones that either: 1) attended a non-T14; 2) graduated in the bottom 50% of their class; 3) paid sticker. The law school industry punishes those who do not work hard and research thoroughly.

Hi, I am a first year undergraduate (bachelors in business management) and I am one of those kids who wanted to be a lawyer since 12 years of age...I was wondering what kind of work/efforts would I have to do in law school in order to be in the top 20% of my class??

but that's much different from the question of shekels my first forty or the meat when I want to make today is that wall school is a very risky investment so we're thinking about whether walsall i thinking kids just a few it you can't think of it as should I study lol combining that with the question is it worth the money the tuition at hospitals bosko's very expensive i think huh an average is probably around twenty five thousands a year for three years of seventy five thousand dollars my in law school education passage of the the law school that makes it very risky in order to pete aaronson for a while still looms..... How hard is law school? I'm planning to go to Temple and I heard all law schools have a grading curve so you have to beat all of your classmates to get a decent grade. I was the type that slacked off in college without doing too much work besides writing the occasional giant essay paper. In law school, how many hrs of work/study do you do? Thanks
@ImperialDecree7 жыл бұрын
You went to a solid level law school. What are your thoughts on attending Non-ABA accredited law schools? (for example, California schools, "CAL-BAR) Proponents of these schools often state that "It doesn't matter where you go to law school." or, "We have 100ish sitting judges from this law school, or high ranking officials etc... I feel that the legal material would be the same, but if it were really true that it "doesn't really matter" where you go, then anyone would just able to gain entry/acceptance not only into Harvard or Yale, but even the top 20-30 ranked law schools, which can also be an extraordinary feat for even someone like me.
