Lee's hospital print pricing anecdote at the start of the episode is great info to pass along! I also appreciate Will pointing out that every time an illustrator negotiates a project fee (whether the client accepts it or not) they make the industry a little better for everyone else.

Yeah, but is Lee's pricing going to drive healthcare costs even higher!?! 😃
@lindaaristizabal

@@brianbarber2188 Not at the same rate, the healthcare industry is way bigger. Everyone needs a doctor, only select people to hire illustrators. Not to mention that from what I understand about US healthcare prices are so high due to the insurance companies (I am in Canada so healthcare for here is free anyway).

Yesterday, I was talking with someone who used to work in the restaurant industry. Somewhere in the middle of the conversation she mentioned that the “artists” who painted signs on their windows - you know, the kind that says “Special Taco Tuesday” - had a starting price around $200 and went up with each additional word, letter, or image. I think Lee could have gotten more than that considering that his work is permanent and not something that will get scrapped off a window next week.

We're called sign writers or sign painters and it's certainly an art form if you ask me! And yup it's pricey work for bespoke, hand painted lettering. It's a very intricate skill, it takes years to get anywhere near good at it. So the price rightfully reflects that!

On making copies of master work, Ive combined this exercise with recording the picture books I'm reading. Instead of simply writing the book info, I also recreate a small version of one of the illustrations in my notebook with the entry. First, it helps me deconstruct the page design, including the text relationship to the image. Second, I start seeing the line choices and how an accomplished illustrator tells a visual story. Third, I'm making a beautiful notebook that will eventually show me how far I've come through reading, experience, and observation.

I hate Will Terry. He completely embarrassed me in front of an old boss once. I watched his video called "New Amazing Photoshop Lighting Brush Plug In" and I went to work the next day excited to show my boss about this amazing plugin that we should buy... ugh.. Im still embarrassed 10 years later.. haha. This podcast is great, keep it up guys! I forgive you, Will

Hi guys I appreciate all you do I’m busy with work and kids and try to get Practice in every day I’d love a digital set up is there an entry level option? Do I get an I pad or go for the cintique or is there something else that is not a huge financial commitment

There are other tablets out there definitely cheaper, but for the money i think Ipad is the best deal. And worth the money if you can save up to purchase one. There are a ton of free apps to start out on and better apps to buy as you progress up.

Scott Wakefield is such a great guy! I visited RMCAD last year :) I agree Lee, the oils in the air and the traditional media is amazing. I am taking a lettering class and they are encouraging traditional media, which is pushing me and you're right Will, there is no UNDO button. LOL However, traditional trumps digital in the world of licensing, according to them and others I am finding, yet it's true that we must have our files in digital format. Knowing both worlds is so important. Thanks for another great video you guys!

I realize it's a bit silly to ask this when you're currently in the process of it. But do you plan on doing self publishing pro again in the future? I had events scheduled that would've made me miss the first 2 weeks so I didn't sign up for this session. Thanks!
