I applied for and was offered a position for a boutique consulting agency, but they offered me $30K lower than the industry standard for that position. I negotiated, and they only offered me $5K more. I asked to speak to current employees, and they all told me that they routinely worked 60+ hour weeks. I did the calculation and my hourly wage would have ended up being what I was making at my previous job. So yes, it was essentially my dream job, but I couldn't in good faith take a job where I would have had to work more hours and not get compensated fairly for it.

@@_baller this is often the case, however, what they described actually messes with other aspects of the job that you should consider before accepting a job. In this case, the amount of hours required eats into work/life balance. As an example, I was recently offered a position that paid a decent amount above what I am currently making. The position is located a lot further than my current employer. In addition, current employees work an additional 10 hours a week in the office more than I do now, plus they usually answer emails or do work from home. So work/life can be thrown off. I had to sit down and calculate what the drive will cost me to see how much I would be keeping and if medical benefits would be costing me more a year. When all was said and done, I would have been making about $5k more a year to travel farther and work longer hours. I found it not in my best interest at this time. Maybe I'll find something similar a lot closer. Happiness is not always about money. By the way, my current employer is really easy to get along with. When I broke my ankle, they allowed me to work remotely, allowed me to go to doctors appointments without using PTO, and were very understanding when the pandemic hit when I asked to work from home due to medical conditions I developed after going through chemo. They granted this before states even thought of locking down. So, I know they care for their employees and actually want me on board.

Linda you are so right. I accepted a job where in the interview, I felt a little "off" about the hiring manager. I accepted the job because it was at the same organization that I was working at prior and I had a good experience, and the job itself was very attractive to me. i wish I had seen this video before I accepted that position because I wish I listened to my gut. I found the hiring manager to be almost a bully to me, and I went home crying after work week after week! I quit after 3 months because I could not stand it. Luckily I got a job soon after and they didn't see any huge red flag by my short employment on that team; however, truly I wish I had listened to my initial gut reaction and not accepted the job. Lesson learned

I had a virtual group interview today and it was so awkward. I say this because I was the only person visible and everyone else had their cameras off. The panel was impressed with my resume & my responses. The group consist of 4 to 5 people but only 2 people was interactive. It's a remote position, and in the beginning I was highly interested but now, the last process was so unprofessional on the organization end, that's it's making me recant my decision to accept it if Im offer the job. One thing I've seen time and time again is the manager who honestly wants to do what's best for everyone and everything but bureaucracy gets in the way. A great example is a big box store where even if you are the one person screwing up everything, I mean creating massive losses for the store at large, but you don't violate any policy, you're good. But the best worker clocked out to lunch, literally seconds too late gets fired.

Couldn't you simply take the job and continue searching until you found a better one. If i were to return to the USA tomorrow I would likely take the first job I could find so i could pay bills and stay there until i could find one i liked better in China, Russia or Brazil. Generally, even if i am not running out of money i would try to find a job that at least pays my rent so that way I am keeping my income in the green. I would rather be working miserably with a roof over my head than not working and miserable with no roof over my head.

I have a few problems 1. I thought my resume seems looking neat enough but not sure is it acceptable to most of the employers working for the companies. I don't really know what am I missing from my resume 2. Even if how many jobs I applied and submit my resume, employers will only care who is staying nearby from the company located and I always seems to stay so far distance away from them due to the how many operating hours a day and days a week. Looking at the worse so far, most companies requires a 7am to 3pm or 3pm to 11pm shift and 6 days a week. It's always be fixed or rotating shift set by the company supervisors or managers or bosses and always no changes are allowed anymore once every schedule has been fixed all the time 3. I don't know how to get job fast by hiring me, I got 2 choices but I am not sure if there's more to find a way quicker to get a job. By far, one is recruitment agencies and looks like may take some time after helping me to apply and asking me to wait and wait and another one is go to the company or in a shopping centre store itself to apply to them directly. 4. Been looking for a permanent job for over a year and unfortunately I can't get any good permanent job, most of the time is always temporary jobs. Longest is 3 months and although I just got permanently suspended because I did some mistakes previosuly even if it means a temporary job. So I don't really know what to do, I don't know how to keep on searching anymore, almost feeling like giving up all the time I am from Singapore and I feel it's one of the hardest country to find a better job out there

Hello. Question: I am in the process of interviewing. I applied to a position entitled "Supply Chain Specialist". A recruiter posted the ad. When I was given the information of who I would be greeting in the interview, the itinerary says, "Candidate: Customer Service Representative - (and then my name)." I am very frustrated because I did not apply to that title. If they posted that in the 1st place, I would've never even looked at the job ad and probably would've never applied. I have my personal reasons for why I would not want to be called that. The job functions are very similar to what I've done in the past and I was good at that and I'm okay with that the duties being similar to this job. I just want the title that they advertised. Do you think I have a good chance to negotiate a title change?? If they really want a CSR, they should've said that in the job title. I think I really want to work there as I've done my research about the company.

Im deciding between 2 companies at the moment: a. I like the product of the company and based on my research, it seems to be what I want to do and I can gain good experience in the role, but the interview with the hiring manager wasn't as great as expected, I guess what that means is the person is more serious than easygoing during the interview (but I did research and the people he works with seem to stay with him for a long time so I dont think that he's a bad employer, maybe it was just that he needed to be serious during the interview...). b. I loved the interview with the hiring manager and the company culture seems to be a great fit for my personality, but Im still unsure about the jobscope and whether it's what I want to do. In this case, which should I go for?
@asadb1990
@asadb1990 3 жыл бұрын
well either option is questionable. but if i had to choose i would select option a. the company and interviewer seem like they know what they are going. i could care less about culture or the product the company. all i care about is balance between pay, work load, and boss's expectations. i want to come in at 8a and by 5p I'm out the door. and anytime i have to stay even an hour late, boss should be thankful and be willing to look the other way when i want to leave early. and the second employer looks like unpaid overtime will be the norm. and the boss will be only one to reap the rewards.

My sister-in-law just went through this. She took a job at a different firm because it was the next step up on her career path. She was put in charge of a team, but didn't receive any real communication from her manager about the services they were providing or any guidelines to follow. She took the job because she could work remotely instead of traveling into the city and was a decent raise. She ended up working a ton more hours because the team was worthless and we're not prepared for their meetings. She gave it a full year thinking it would get easier after she learned the ropes and the team would gel. She left and is back at her previous company in pretty much the same roll. She is making a bit more money than before, but works remotely now except with an occasional meeting downtown. She's comfortable with who she works with and for. It's part of the grass is not always greener.

Question 2 did it for me. The company I interviewed is using really old technology. I would not be learning new skills. Thank you.

Is the hiring manager or the person Ill be working with someone I respect and seems respectable? 4. Is the company one that I can see myself working at? Hi Linda, thanks for your knowledge. All your tips were very helpful and informative. By the way, just if possible can u share some thoughts as to how can be a good negotiator or how to deal negotiation when dealing with an account, may it be a marketing support or sales target. Big thanks!

I am in a situation now where ive reached my ambitious limit with my current role, there is a pay freeze. So ive been offered another job, its £7k GBP more than what i am on. But i am worried it doesnt excite me. The client base is pretty boring. And a lot of the team processes and reporting look really odd! They also have a strict go in to the office policy and office attire. I found that really old fashioned. Do i question these things a lot of it is ingrained culture! Not sure i like it. 😕 I have an interview with a small brand but much more my thinking and culture just same salary as what i am on....my dream has always been to work for a brand, not an agency (i am in digital) what to do??? 😢

Thank you Linda. This is quite informative. I once took a position/job for an e-payment processing company (Sept - Dec, 2010), that I actually never capture on my CV. Lucky for me it came immediately after my post-grad, so it never shows up as a career-gap.

How is it the compensation, benefits and location aren't the most important things to consider on taking a job offer? That's my dilemma right now - I got a job offer that aligns with my career goal, but the package isn't that good, especially the health insurance coverage. I am very bored of my current job, there's no career growth but the benefits are great. I still haven't signed because I am torn between choosing career growth and benefits.

i'm so confused , im in the same dilemma and need your opinion. . I got job offer last week for job A and took the position. This week i got an offer for job B which pays more, about $7k more a year. Job A is a hybrid schedule that works 2 days in the the office while Job B is hybrid schedule but have to work 4 days in the office. Job A has better medical insurance benefits than job B. I was working for job B previously for 4 years so i have seniority there if i take that while Job A is a brand new company. With all those factors said, which one would you take, Job A or B ????

Hi Linda, What if you really want to have the job but the contract is short term and one day at a week is a very early in the day and i dont have anyone to watch the baby this early in the day. The other job was an amazing first conversation. Then i had a second conversation with the staff and one person was so sweet and the other was a bit strange. I really got a lot of questions where i not felt good about... I am really second guessing what job i have to take. Job 1: A really nice place and where i can learn a lot but the contract is short and i have to begin 7 o clock one day at the week but i have novody to watch my baby. Job 2: A nice job in the same sector where i work in now and i had a lot of fun during my first conversation but one co worker was very strange in second conversation. She really set the mooi and the rest of the colleges tried to make it seem less strange. Hope that you can advice me. Greetings Samantha

Hi All, Please anyone help to get this question . I had interview with one off the employer it almost interview process is over and for the salary they are ready to pay very lower salary that is 50% lesser than market and lesser than my expectations and wanna me to work for probation period with that salary. Once probation over they said we can negotiate salary as per your expectations and provide almost nearer to market. I have few experience like that they will say only for Just shake of saying but it is related employer. They need an immediate base to join. I just left the place give me a day or twice to think about lower offer. Is it good to send an email today about my expectations or else I can wait for their call or I can call? I am getting one more offer which is in sales that is fixed and more on commission basis .Which one to choose ? I need to decide within a day. Kindly help me urgent.
